Salivary gland neoplasms in oral and maxillofacial regions: a 23-year retrospective study of 6982 cases in an eastern Chinese population.

There is little information in the English-language literature about the epidemiology of salivary gland neoplasms in the eastern Chinese population. A large retrospective study (6982 primary salivary tumors during 23 years) was carried out to investigate the clinicopathological features (tumor location, patient sex and age) of these tumors in this population. 3593 tumors were in males and 3389 in females. Pleomorphic adenoma (69%) was the most common tumor and 20% were located in minor glands. 92% of Warthin's tumors occurred in males. Malignant tumors were predominantly adenoid cystic carcino

Primary pulmonary hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma with fusions of both EWSR1::CREM and IRF2::NTRK3: report of a case with an aggressive behavior.

Primary pulmonary hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is a rare salivary gland-type tumor newly recognized in recent years, with approximately 21 cases reported to date in the English literature, which constitutes a challenge in pathology diagnosis, particularly in small biopsy specimens. Here, we present a case of pulmonary HCCC diagnosed by computed tomography-guided percutaneous lung biopsy in a 70-year-old man's right lower lung. Although the morphology and immunophenotype of the tumor suggested the diagnosis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, fluorescence in situ hybridization failed to rev

Immunohistochemical localization of amylase in sialoadenitis and salivary gland tumors.

Immunohistochemical demonstration of alpha-amylase has been made in sialoadenitis-involved tissue and salivary gland tumors, as well as in normal salivary glands. Immunoreactive alpha-amylase with trypsin pretreatment was confined to irregularly staining serous acinar cells in the parotid and submandibular glands, and to demilunes in sublingual glands. In obstructive adenitis, staining was irregular from high to negative in acini in early or intermediate stages. Dilated ductal segments contained cells positive for alpha-amylase in the early stage following obstruction. Pleomorphic adenomas wer

Hemoptisis como síntoma inicial de carcinoma mucoepidermoide pulmonar en un niño.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a rare neoplasm in children. Nonspecific symptoms such as hemoptysis may delay diagnosis because they are confused with other respiratory diseases. CLINICAL CASE: A 9-year-old male patient presented recurrent episodes of cough and hemoptysis. The patient had two similar episodes associated with wheezing in previous months and was treated as an asthma attack. Radiological studies and bronchoscopy reported a lung mass obstructing the left main bronchus, causing atelectasis and involvement of the left lung. Transthoracic biopsy was positive for a

Clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study of intraoral mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to assess the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of intraoral mucoepidermoid carcinomas and its relationship with the prognosis. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: From 1953 to 1993, 27 patients with intraoral mucoepidermoid carcinomas surgically treated were selected for this study. Clinical data were obtained from the medical records, the microscopic slides were reviewed, the tumors were graded, and immunohistochemical analysis for p53, PCNA, cerbB-2, and CEA were carried out. RESULTS: The tumors were more frequent in patients between 40 and 6

Recent updates in salivary gland tumors of the lung.

Salivary gland tumors are uncommon primary lesions in the lung. Their morphologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular characteristics resemble those of their counterparts in the head and neck or elsewhere. Most common primary pulmonary salivary gland tumors include mucoepidermoid carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, and epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma. The study of these neoplasms is hampered by their paucity. Therefore, studies are in general small or restricted to individual cases. Despite this challenge recent advances have been made specifically at the molecular level. Molecular alteration

[A case of giant-size mucoepidermoid carcinoma of parotid gland].

INTRODUCTION: A mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a rare disease of the salivary glands. It usually occurs as a small tumor (a few centimeters diameter). The most important diagnostic procedure for the treatment is a histological examination. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present the case of 71 years old woman with giant in size tumor of the left parotid gland. The tumor had developed in the three years' time and no paresis of the facial nerve had occurred during that time. Preoperative fine needle aspiration biopsy of the parotid gland masses showed pleomorphic adenoma cells. RESULTS: The surgery trea

Targeting histone deacetylase and NFκB signaling as a novel therapy for Mucoepidermoid Carcinomas.

Malignancies from the salivary glands are rare and represent 11% of all cancers from the oropharyngeal anatomical area. Mucoepidermoid Carcinomas (MEC) is the most common malignancy from the salivary glands. Low survival rates of high-grade Mucoepidermoid Carcinomas (MEC) are particularly associated with the presence of positive lymph nodes, extracapsular lymph node spread, and perineural invasion. Most recently, the presence of cancer stem cells (CSC), and the activation of the NFκB signaling pathway have been suggested as cues for an acquired resistance phenotype. We have previously shown th

Mucoepidermoid carcinomas of the thymus. A clinicopathologic study of six cases.

Six cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus are presented. The patients were two men and four women aged 17 to 66 years (median age, 34.5). Clinically, three patients had symptoms of chest discomfort and three were asymptomatic. Grossly, the tumors in three patients were described as cystic structures varying in size from 7 to 8 cm in greatest dimension, with focal areas of induration within the walls of the cyst that averaged from 1.5 to 3 cm. The other three cases had grossly and radiographically well-circumscribed, homogeneous tumor masses. Histologically, the lesions showed a spect

Breast Metastasis from Pulmonary Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma in a Male Patient: A Case Report.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lung is a rare salivary gland-type tumor with heterogeneous clinical behavior and the potential to mimic neoplasms arising in other organs. The purpose of this report is to describe an exceptionally uncommon presentation of pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma manifesting as a breast metastasis in a male patient, a scenario that poses significant diagnostic challenges due to its rarity and its morphological resemblance to primary breast carcinoma. We evaluated the patient through clinical examination, cross-sectional imaging, endobronchial procedures, ultrasound-g

Salivary-Like Tumors of the Thyroid: A Comprehensive Review of Three Rare Carcinomas.

Thyroid carcinomas represent 3.2% of all new cases of cancer in the United States. Whereas most thyroid tumors arise from follicular cells or, less commonly, parafollicular cells, the derivation of some rare primary thyroid carcinoma subtypes is less clear and represents an area of evolving knowledge. Primary thyroid carcinomas that resemble neoplasms characteristic of the salivary glands ("salivary-like" primary thyroid carcinomas) arguably represent some of the most unusual primary thyroid tumors. Herein, we have undertaken a review of the literature in order to present a comprehensive overv

Neoplasms of the salivary glands: analysis of 727 histopathological reports in a single institution.

INTRODUCTION: Salivary gland tumors comprise three to ten percent of all head and neck tumors. The parotid gland is affected most often (64-80%). Malignant tumors constitute a minority, occurring in 15-32% of cases. Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign tumor, while mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm characterized by the highest incidence. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to conduct a cross-sectional study of all salivary gland tumors diagnosed in a tertiary hospital in the period between 1995 and 2013. METHODS: We reviewed all salivary gland histopathologica

[Primary malignant salivary gland-type tumors of the lung: clinico-pathological study of 10 cases].

Primary pulmonary salivary gland-type tumors are rare and characterized by a specific clinico-pathological manifestation. They are proximal tumors affecting young subjects and not associated with smoking. For optimal management, it is important to distinguish them from other bronchopulmonary tumors, with which they don´t share either biology or treatment and outcome. We conducted a retrospective study, including all primary malignant salivary gland-type tumors of the lung, over a period of 32 years, from January 1987 to December 2019. We collected data from the medical records of 10 patients:

Salivary gland tumors in maxillofacial region: a retrospective study of 130 cases in a southern Iranian population.

Tumors of the salivary glands are uncommon head and neck neoplasia. We conducted a retrospective study of 392 cases over the last 6 years in Shiraz, south of Iran, to investigate the clinicopathological features of these tumors in Iranian population. The age of the patients ranged from 8 to 85 years, with the mean age 44.57 ± 14.65 years and male-to-female (M : F) ratio was 1.02 : 1. For benign tumors, there was a propensity towards females, whereas the malignant tumor was more common in males. The ratio of benign tumors to malignancies was 2.19 : 1. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) was the most commo

[Resected Pulmonary Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma Containing High-grade Lesions in a Young Adult:Report of a Case].

A 20-year-old female underwent a health checkup that revealed an abnormal shadow in the left upper lung field on a chest radiograph. A further examination with chest computed tomography( CT) showed a 25 mm solid tumor in the center of B1+2 in the left upper lobe. A biopsy of the tumor obstructing the left B1+2 was performed during bronchoscopy, and a pathological study diagnosed it as mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lung. The patient underwent left upper lobectomy and lymph node dissection( ND2a-1). The pathological diagnosis was pT1cN0M0, indicating a predominance of high-grade lesions due to

Immunohistochemical expression of cytokeratins 7 and 20 in malignant salivary gland tumors.

On the basis of the heterogeneity of cytokeratins 7 and 20 expression in malignant epithelial tumors, the cytokeratin 7/20 immunophenotype has served as a useful diagnostic tool for discrimination of primary and/or metastatic carcinomas of unknown origin. However, the expression pattern of these cytokeratins in malignant salivary gland tumors has not been thoroughly studied. Our study material was composed of 84 malignant tumors of primary major or minor salivary gland origin. Nine histologic types of carcinoma were represented, including mucoepidermoid (26 cases), adenoid cystic (25), polymor

A Case of Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Larynx.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a common malignant neoplasm of the salivary glands. While quite common in the oral cavity, it is rare in the larynx. A middle-aged male patient presented to the otolaryngology clinic of our institution with the chief complaint of hoarseness. A supraglottic subepithelial mass was detected on the left laryngeal ventricle after a comprehensive clinical examination. Eventually, the diagnosis was established with a biopsy after a direct laryngoscopy. The multidisciplinary team of our institution suggested total laryngectomy without adjuvant modalities. An uneventful proc

Sclerosing Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Parotid Gland.

INTRODUCTION: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma represents one of the most common malignant salivary gland tumors. However, the sclerosing morphologic variant is extremely rare with only 23 reported cases in the English-language literature since it was discovered in 1987. CASE REPORT: Herein, we describe another case that was diagnosed in a 25-year-old woman presenting with a posterior auricular mass, as well as a review of the literature, which demonstrates that this is an extremely rare malignancy with no strict protocol for treatment. CONCLUSION: Pathologists must be aware of recognizing low grade

Unusual Presentation of a Parotid Gland Malignancy: A Case Report.

The most commonly occurring malignant salivary gland tumor is mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC). It consists of intermediate cells, squamous cells, and mucous-secreting cells. It is usually not capsulated and is identified by mucocarmine staining. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma exists in the thyroid gland and lungs as well. This report presents a case of a very rare sclerosing variant of MEC of the parotid gland in a 48-year-old patient. The patient presented with a small swelling below the left earlobe. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was carried out. A diagnosis of pleomorphi
