Childhood ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid successfully treated with rituximab.

Ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is a chronic autoimmune blistering disease that usually affects elderly patients being extremely rare in pediatric population. Despite aggressive immunosuppressive therapy, ocular MMP may progress causing significant morbidity. Herein, we describe a toddler with ocular MMP successfully treated with rituximab.

Mitomycin-C for mucous membrane overgrowth in OOKP eyes.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to report the use of mitomycin-C (MMC) in the treatment of mucous membrane overgrowth in eyes with osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP). METHODS: Records of 4 cases with mucous membrane overgrowth after stage 2 OOKP surgery were reviewed. RESULTS: All the patients had undergone a mucous membrane trimming procedure followed by MMC application. None of the patients had any episode of recurrence of the mucous membrane overgrowth after a single application of MMC in the follow-up period that ranged from 1 to 11 years. CONCLUSIONS: MMC can successfully arrest m

Profibrotic phenotype of conjunctival fibroblasts from mucous membrane pemphigoid.

Ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid is an immunobullous disease in which excessive conjunctival fibrosis causes blindness, and the pathogenesis of scarring is incompletely understood. To establish whether profibrotic fibroblasts with an altered phenotype exist in ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid, we compared the functional characteristics of pemphigoid conjunctival fibroblasts to normal conjunctival fibroblasts with respect to cell division; migration; collagen contraction; matrix metalloproteinase, secretion of collagen and chemokines; and myofibroblast differentiation. We found that pemphigoi

A rare unilateral case of ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid.

PURPOSE: Ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is known to be rapidly progressive in younger patients and affects both eyes. We are aware of only one other reported case of unilateral ocular MMP. The case presented in this study is unique in that it demonstrates genuinely unilateral ocular MMP in a younger patient. METHODS: We report a case of a 50-year-old man who presented with a 3-month history of left eye redness, irritation, and mild discharge. He also suffered from mouth ulcers, skin lesions, and recurrent nose bleeds secondary to nasal mucosal lesions. RESULTS: Examination revealed

[Mucous membrane pemphigoid with ocular involvement. Part II: therapy].

Treatment of mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) aims at reduction of conjunctival inflammation by means of systemic immunosuppression. In addition, cicatricial progression and management of the resulting ocular surface disease requires topical conservative or surgical measures. The former includes systemic immunosuppression with steroids and other immunosuppressive agents: dapsone in mild to moderate disease and cyclophosphamide in severe cases have been established in two randomized trials. Other agents such as methotrexate, azathioprine, mycophenolate mofetil or monoclonal antibodies including

Mucous membrane pemphigoid: clinical aspects, immunopathological features and therapy.

More than 50 years have passed since Civatte, Lever, and others described the clinical and histopathological characteristics of mucous membrane pemphigoid (synonym: cicatricial pemphigoid). This enigmatic, relapsing, and often eventually progressive subepithelial blistering disorder of the mucous membranes and skin continues to challenge investigators trying to understand the pathogenesis of the disease and prevent its progression. Mucous membrane pemphigoid typically begins in late adulthood and has a variable prognosis. Fifty percent of patients will develop esophageal and ocular lesions tha

Interventions for mucous membrane pemphigoid and epidermolysis bullosa acquisita.

BACKGROUND: Mucous membrane pemphigoid and epidermolysis bullosa acquisita are acquired autoimmune blistering diseases of the skin. Although they are rare, both can result in scarring of mucous membranes, which may lead to blindness and life threatening respiratory complications. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of treatments for mucous membrane pemphigoid and epidermolysis bullosa acquisita. SEARCH STRATEGY: Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) of patients with MMP or EBA were identified from MEDLINE and EMBASE from their inception to March 2000. The Cochrane Skin Group Specialised Register

In vitro organ culture model for mucous membrane pemphigoid.

Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP), also known as cicatricial pemphigoid, is a rare vesiculobullous disease of mucosal tissues, which involves the oral, ocular, and other mucous membranes. We have studied a group of patients with histologically and immunopathologically proven pemphigoid disease involving predominantly the conjunctiva and oral mucosa in addition to other mucosae. The purpose of our study was to (i) demonstrate the specific binding of autoantibodies present in the sera of patients with MMP to normal human oral mucosa by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) and (ii) to study the role

S2k Guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of mucous membrane pemphigoid.

Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is a pemphigoid disease with predominant mucous membrane involvement. It mainly affects the mucous membranes of the mouth, eyes, nose and pharynx, but also the larynx, trachea, esophagus, genital and perianal regions. The manifestation of the disease covers a wide spectrum from gingival erythema and single oral lesions to severe tracheal strictures that obstruct breathing and conjunctival scarring with marked visual impairment and, not infrequently, blindness. In addition to a clinical picture of predominant mucosal involvement, diagnosis is based on direct imm

Implant and prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with mucous membrane pemphigoid.

Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is an autoimmune condition characterized by subepithelial separation and deposition of autoantibodies and complement along the basement membrane zone. The disease results in the development of vesiculobullous lesions of the mucous membranes and skin. This report discusses the surgical treatment and management and the prosthetic implant rehabilitation of a patient with mucous membrane pemphigoid. The rationale for this treatment was to fabricate a prosthesis that was stable and did not rub against the gingival tissues and that was easily cleaned. The overdenture

Successful treatment of a mucous membrane pemphigoid in a young dog.

Mucous membrane pemphigoid was diagnosed in a 2.5-year-old male intact foxhound-beagle cross which was presented with an acute onset of non-pruritic, multifocal, slowly progressive erosive-ulcerative dermatitis predominantly affecting the nasal planum, eyelids and muzzle with multiple vesicles on the inner pinnae, oral mucosa and tongue. The diagnosis was based on clinical signs and histological examination of skin biopsies. The patient did not respond to immunosuppressive prednisolone therapy, but went into complete remission with oral doxycycline and niacinamide and stayed in remission on lo

Bilateral keratoprostheses in a patient with ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid.

Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) with ocular involvement, also referred to as ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, is a rare, autoimmune blistering disease that can have devastating effects for patients. The resulting corneal neovascularization, recurrent corneal abrasions, and ulceration can ultimately result in severe vision loss. We present a 64-year-old man with recalcitrant ocular MMP and consequently advanced corneal involvement that received bilateral keratoprostheses. This case highlights an aggressive but successful placement of bilateral keratoprostheses in recalcitrant ocular MMP, which r
