Patients' experiences of Parkinson's disease.

Patients' (n = 101) experiences of Parkinson's disease (PD) were studied through structured interviews. Oblique factor analysis produced three moderately intercorrelated clusters of items reflecting reported severity of motoric, cognitive, and psychological problems, respectively. Scales formed from the factors were correlated with demographic, disease-related, and psychosocial variables. The demographic variables were not significantly correlated with the scales or with any other variables in the set. Hoehn and Yahr staging was significantly related to scores only on the motoric severity scal

Combined exposure to wildfire ash and road salts reshapes skin and gut microbiota and reduces fitness in amphibians.

Rising wildfire risk and continued winter road maintenance increase the potential for wildfire ash and road salts to enter cold-region amphibian breeding habitats via rainfall or snowmelt runoff, yet their combined effects on skin and gut microbiota remain unclear. Rana dybowskii tadpoles were exposed for 28 days to control (C), low-temperature road salt (D), eco-friendly road salt (H), aqueous extract of wildfire ash (T), T + D (TD), and T + H (TH). Skin and gut microbiota were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results showed that exposure reduced body mass, developmental proportio

Variations of tongue coating microbiota in children with Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis.

BACKGROUND: Variations in the oral microbiota have been significantly correlated with the progress of autoimmune diseases, such as immunoglobulin A nephropathy and Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP). However, there is no report outlining the character of tongue coating microbiota variations in children with Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis (HSPN). METHOD: A total of 20 children with HSPN and 14 healthy controls were recruited for this research. Tongue coating samples of two groups were collected for 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The diversity, principal component analysis (PCA), nonmetric multidime

Impulsivity and anxiety-related dimensions in adults with bulimic-spectrum disorders differentially relate to eating disordered behaviors.

While facets of both anxiety and impulsivity appear central to the development and maintenance of bulimia nervosa (BN), specific BN behaviors may be propagated by differing profiles of risk. The current study examined associations between dimensions of anxiety and impulsivity and BN symptoms (binge eating, vomiting, laxative misuse, driven exercise), both in terms of the presence of such behaviors and their frequency. Two hundred and four women (Mage = 25.7 years) who met DSM-IV criteria for full or subthreshold BN completed self-report measures of perfectionism (Frost Multidimensional Perfect

A comprehensive analysis of the factor structure of the Beck Depression Inventory-II in a sample of outpatients with adjustment disorder and depressive episode.

OBJECTIVES: Despite being commonly used in research and clinical practice, the evidence regarding the factor structure of the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) remains equivocal and this has implications on how the scale scores should be aggregated. Researchers continue to debate whether the BDI-II is best viewed as a unidimensional scale, or whether specific subscales have utility. The present study sought to test a comprehensive range of competing factor analytic models of the BDI-II, including traditional non-hierarchical multidimensional models and confirmatory bifactor models. Information from Noise: Measuring Dyslexia Risk Using Rasch-like Matrix Factorization with a Procedure for Equating Instruments.

This study examines the psychometric properties of a screening protocol for dyslexia and demonstrates a special form of matrix factorization called Nous based on the Alternating Least Squares algorithm. Dyslexia presents an intrinsically multidimensional complex of cognitive loads. By building and enforcing a common 6-dimensional space, Nous extracts a multidimensional signal for each person and item from test data that increases the Shannon entropy of the dataset while at the same time being constrained to meet the special objectivity requirements of the Rasch model. The resulting Dyslexia Ri

Multidimensional Pain Characteristics in Older Adults with Chronic Venous Leg Ulcers.

Objective: Pain affects wound healing, treatment, and quality of life because it has significant impacts on physical, psychological, and social well-being. Despite the fact that more than half of chronic venous leg ulcer (CVLU) patients experience mild-to-moderate pain, the multidimensional characteristics of CVLU pain are not well documented. The objective of this study was to describe the multidimensional pain characteristics, including the sensory, affective, cognitive, and behavioral dimensions, of CVLU before debridement. Approach: Participants (N = 40) were recruited from a wound clinic.

Rapid and cost-effective presumptive screening of firearm discharge-consistent metals via bromopyrogallol red colorimetry and machine learning.

The identification of gunshot residues (GSR) is pivotal in forensic chemistry; however, standard confirmatory techniques, such as Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), are often costly, time-consuming, and centralized in major urban facilities. This study proposes a rapid and cost-effective presumptive screening framework for firearm discharge-consistent metals (Pb2 + and Sb3+), integrating Bromopyrogallol Red (BPR) colorimetry, digital image processing, multivariate chemometrics, and machine learning algorithms. One hundred samples were evaluated, i

Transitioning from child and adolescent psychiatry to follow-up care: a concept mapping study.

Youth with severe and enduring mental health problems often require follow-up care after treatment in child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP). In this study, follow-up care is defined as services beyond CAP, including basic mental health support, primary mental health care, and practical or parenting support delivered by community-based teams. However, transitions to such care are often fragmented, poorly coordinated, and experienced as abrupt. This study explores perspectives of CAP clinicians, follow-up care providers, parents, and youth to identify factors considered both important and feasib

Ecological and phylogenetic components of flatfish ectoparasites (Pleuronectiformes: Paralichthyidae) from the Southern Gulf of Mexico.

For many years, parasite ecologists have debated the relative importance of phylogeny and ecology as drivers of parasite community structure. Here, we address this issue using data on the metazoan ectoparasite communities of different flatfish species. Twenty species of flatfish were collected along the continental shelf of the Southern Gulf of Mexico and examined for ectoparasites. Eight flatfish species were parasitized by at least one ectoparasite species. In total, 326 ectoparasites, representing 11 species (4 monogeneans, 4 copepods, 1 isopod, 1 branchiurid, and 1 leech) were removed from

Using dimensionality-reduction techniques to understand the organization of psychotic symptoms in persistent psychotic illness and first episode psychosis.

Psychotic disorders are highly heterogeneous. Understanding relationships between symptoms will be relevant to their underlying pathophysiology. We apply dimensionality-reduction methods across two unique samples to characterize the patterns of symptom organization. We analyzed publicly-available data from 153 participants diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (fBIRN Data Repository and the Consortium for Neuropsychiatric Phenomics), as well as 636 first-episode psychosis (FEP) participants from the Prevention and Early Intervention Program for Psychosis (PEPP-Montreal). Perceptual rating instrument for speech evaluation of stuttering treatment.

A rating instrument is described that can be used to assess the results of stuttering treatments. The instrument is designed for use with naive listeners. It yields a comprehensive and detailed description of the speech quality in terms of articulation, phonation, pitch, and loudness; in addition, it includes a naturalness scale. Analysis of ratings obtained with the instrument show that naturalness is a multidimensional characteristic. Moreover, the speech characteristics that determine the naturalness ratings appear to be different pretreatment, posttreatment, and at follow-up treatment. The

Family correlates of behavioral problems among adolescents in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Globally, 20% of adolescents exhibit behavioral problems. Behavioral problems are associated with individual and environmental factors. However, little is known about the contribution of the nuclear family to the development of behavioral problems in adolescents from sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to explore family-based correlates influencing behavioral problems among adolescents in Rwanda. METHODS: With an institutional-based cross-sectional study design, a convenience sample of 158 participants {107 males and 51 females; Mean age (M) = 16.96, Standard Deviation (SD) = 1.8

[Optimizing anesthesiologic premedication with reference to biopsychological theories. Exemplified by the effect of dipotassium clorazepate and zolpidem in combination with promethazine].

UNLABELLED: The following double-blind randomized placebo-controlled study dealt with three questions: 1. Are differentiated psychometric test systems suitable measuring emotions before anaesthesia? 2. What are the effects of different doses of zolpidem (8.03 mg vs. 16.06 mg) compared with dipotassiumclorazepat (10 mg vs. 20 mg) on emotions in premedication? 3. Is the combination with Promethazin suggestive? METHOD: 320 patients were randomly assigned to different regimes of preanaesthetic medication. As primary premedication they received either zolpidem 8.03 mg or zolpidem 16.06 mg or dipot

A genome-wide analysis of cardiac lesions of pigs that die during transport: Is heart failure of in-transit-loss pigs associated with a heritable cardiomyopathy?

While heart failure is a primary cause of death for many in-transit-loss (ITL) pigs, the underlying cause of these deaths is not known. Cardiomyopathies are considered a common cause of heart failure in humans and often have a genetic component. The objective of this study was to determine if genes associated with cardiomyopathies could be identified in ITL pigs. Samples from the hearts of pigs that died during transport to an abattoir in Ontario, Canada were collected and genotyped along with samples from pigs that did not die during transport (ILT hearts: n = 149; non-ITL/control hearts: n =

Development and validation of a scale for evaluating intermittent catheterization ability of family caregivers of patients with neurogenic bladders.

In this study, we aimed to develop an assessment tool for the intermittent catheterization nursing ability of family caregivers of patients with neurogenic bladders and verify its psychometric characteristics. Using the Farran Comprehensive Care Skills Model as the theoretical framework and by integrating multiple methods, such as literature reviews, semi-structured interviews, group discussions, expert consultations, and pretests, an initial scale was developed. This study was a single-center, cross-sectional survey. A convenience sampling method was used to recruit 255 family caregivers of p
