Variation in presenteeism by generosity of statutory sick pay: a multilevel analysis in 35 European countries.

Attending work despite illness (sickness presenteeism) is common in many workplaces. While most research has focused on individual and workplace determinants, less is known about country-level factors. This study examines (i) the association between national sick pay policies and presenteeism, (ii) the extent to which these policies contribute to cross-country variation in presenteeism, and (iii) whether associations differ by sociodemographic and occupational characteristics. We used data on 19 657 employees in 35 countries from the 2015 European Working Conditions Survey combined with countr

The Effect of Single Level and Multilevel Cervical Fusion on Adjacent Segment Motion: A Biomechanical Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cervical arthrodesis is a common surgical technique utilized to treat many cervical spinal pathologies. The risk of re-operation due to symptomatic adjacent segment disease (ASD) remains steady, and the cause of ASD, whether rigid fixation or disease progression, remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to develop a cervical fusion model and analyze motion of the subaxial cervical spine adjacent segments following single level, two-level, and three-level spine fusion. METHODS: A in vitro cervical arthrodesis biomechanics model was developed utilizing nine fresh-frozen cervic

Sodium Content of Street and Restaurant Foods in Nigeria: A Multilevel Analysis of Food System Determinants.

Background/Objectives: Street and restaurant foods constitute a major component of daily diets in low-resource settings due to their affordability, accessibility, and convenience. However, they are frequently characterised by high sodium content, posing significant public health risks, particularly for hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Empirical data on sodium levels in Nigerian street and restaurant foods remain limited. This study assessed the sodium content of commonly consumed street and restaurant foods in Kano and Ogun States and the Federal Capital Territory in Nigeria using a m

The merit of superimposed vibration for flexibility and passive stiffness: A systematic review with multilevel meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Due to its high relevance in sports and rehabilitation, the exploration of interventions to further optimize flexibility becomes paramount. While stretching might be the most common way to enhance range of motion, these increases could be optimized by imposing an additional activation of the muscle, such as mechanical vibratory stimulation. While several original articles provide promising findings, contradictory results on flexibility and underlying mechanisms (e.g., stiffness), reasonable effect size (ES) pooling remains scarce. With this work we systematically reviewed the avail

Challenging symptoms of persons living with dementia in integrated medical and care institutions: A multilevel analysis.

This study aimed to explore the potential factors associated with challenging symptoms. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 823 persons living with dementia in 13 integrated medical and care institutions in Hunan Province, China. The challenging symptoms score was 5.0 (2.0, 8.0). Higher symptom scores were associated with longer dementia duration (b=0.17, P=0.030), moderate dementia (b=1.19, P<0.001), significantly impaired activities of daily living (b=3.20, P=0.012), and risk for abuse (b=3.53, P<0.001). At the caregiver level, anxiety (b=0.12, P=0.044) and the greater the number of pers

A multilevel analysis of the genetic association between inflammatory bowel disease and primary sclerosing cholangitis.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) are recognized as interconnected immune disorders, necessitating comprehensive genetic analysis. METHODS: The research employed genome-wide association study (GWAS) data pertinent to IBD and PSC. Initially, linkage disequilibrium score regression alongside SUPERGNOVA was utilized to assess their genetic correlation. The genetic overlap between these two conditions was subsequently evaluated using the conditional/conjunctional false discovery rate (cond/conjFDR) approach. Shared loci pertinent to IBD and PSC

Individual and community-level determinants of underweight among lactating mothers in Ethiopia: A multilevel analysis.

BACKGROUND: Determining the nutritional status of lactating women is important because underweight lactating mothers will have low energy levels and reduced cognitive abilities, which will affect the inadequate care of their young children. Thus, malnutrition is passed down from generation to generation, perpetuating the vicious cycle. There is scarce national data on determinants of underweight among lactating mothers in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to identify individual and community-level determinants of underweight among lactating mothers in Ethiopia. METHODS: Data from the Ethiopia

A Multilevel Analysis of Surgical Category and Individual Patient-Level Risk Factors for Postoperative Stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Many studies supporting the association between specific surgical procedure categories and postoperative stroke (POS) do not account for differences in patient-level characteristics between and within surgical categories. The risk of POS after high-risk procedure categories remains unknown after adjusting for such differences in patient-level characteristics. METHODS: Using inpatients in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Initiative Program database, we conducted a retrospective cohort study between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2010. Coverage of harm reduction services and HIV infection: a multilevel analysis of five Chinese cities.

BACKGROUND: Since 2003, a harm reduction program for injecting drug users has been rolled out countrywide in China. It entails services for condom promotion, a needle and syringe program (NSP), and methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). However, it remains unknown if and to what extent the coverage of these services at city level is related to a reduced risk of HIV infection among drug users. METHODS: We wished to quantify the extent to which city-level characteristics (such as NSP and MMT service coverage) and individual-level determinants (e.g., self-reported exposure to NSP and MMT service

Correlates of Intra-Household ITN Use in Liberia: A Multilevel Analysis of Household Survey Data.

Malaria is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Liberia. At the same time, insecticide-treated net (ITN) ownership and use remain low. Access is a key determinant of ITN use but it is not the only one; prior studies have identified factors that affect the use of ITNs in households with at least one ITN. These factors operate at the individual, household, and community levels. However, studies have generally not assessed the psychosocial or ideational determinants of ITN use. Using 2014 household survey data, this manuscript examines the socio-demographic, ideational, household, and comm

Individual and institutional push and pull factors as predictors of retirement timing in Europe: A multilevel analysis.

The number of retired people in Europe has increased significantly in recent decades. It remains unclear, however, whether individuals are more likely to be pulled toward retirement by their expectations about life after retirement than they are to be pushed out of the labour market due to poor health or dislike of one's job. The fact that retirement timing differs rather considerably between European countries suggests that not only micro, but also macro push (i.e. labour market constraints) and pull (i.e. economic incentives) factors influence retirement decisions. This duality heightens the
