Infiltrative cardiomyopathies result from the deposition or anomalous storage of specific substances in the heart, leading to impaired cardiac function and heart failure. In this review, we describe the utility of a variety of imaging modalities for the diagnosis of infiltrative cardiomyopathies and provide algorithms for clinicians to use to evaluate patients with these disorders. We have divided infiltrative cardiomyopathies into two different categories: (1) infiltrative cardiomyopathies characterised by increased wall thickness (eg, cardiac amyloidosis and Anderson-Fabry disease (AFD)) and

Extrapleural space (EPS) is a potential space between the outer layer of the parietal pleura and the inner layer of the chest wall and the diaphragm. Many different pathologies including chronic inflammatory conditions, infections, trauma, neoplastic disease (both benign and malignant) as well as many infiltrative disorders can involve the EPS. It is one of the frequently overlooked entity on imaging due to relative lack of understanding of the anatomy and the imaging appearances of the diseases localized to this space. The knowledge of the EPS is essential for the radiologists as the patholog

Transposition of the great arteries (TGA) is a congenital conotruncal abnormality characterized by discordant connections between the ventricles and great arteries, with the aorta originating from the right ventricle (RV), and the pulmonary artery (PA) originating from the left ventricle (LV). The two main types of TGA are complete transposition or dextro-transposition of the great arteries (D-TGA), commonly referred to as d-loop, and congenitally corrected transposition (CCTGA), commonly referred to as l-loop or L-TGA. In D-TGA, the connections between the ventricles and atria are concordant,

Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) patients are at increased risk of valve dysfunction and ascending aorta aneurysm. Imaging techniques are essential to establish diagnosis, identify complications and indicate surgical treatment. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is the imaging technique of choice to diagnose BAV, valve morphotype and valvular dysfunction in clinical practice. However, it can be less precise in assessing the aortic root and proximal ascending aorta, and visualization of the mid-distal ascending aorta and the arch may be difficult in some adults where cardiac magnetic resonance (CM

Paragangliomas arise from paraganglion cells which serve varied regulatory tasks in the body. When these cells demonstrate neoplasia within the head and neck, they typically present in characteristic locations including the carotid space, the jugular foramen, the middle ear, and along the course of the vagus nerve. The goal of this article is to review the relevant anatomy related to head and neck paragangliomas, as well as their typical imaging characteristics on cross-sectional imaging including CT, MR, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine studies. Additionally, differential considerations, as w

Fabry disease is a lysosomal storage disease with a variety of cardiac manifestations. Although not specific for a diagnosis of Fabry disease, certain cardiac imaging findings may be highly suggestive of the diagnosis of Fabry disease in previously undiagnosed patients or cardiac involvement for patients with a known diagnosis of Fabry disease. In this review, we explore the current applications of multimodality cardiac imaging in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with Fabry disease. Additionally, data regarding tissue characterization by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and novel nuc

Extrahepatic portal vein obstruction (EHPVO) is the most common cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in children. It is defined as thrombosis of the extrahepatic portal vein with or without extension to the intrahepatic portal veins. The Meso-Rex shunt is the gold standard treatment in children with favorable anatomy since it restores physiological portal liver reperfusion. This is achieved by rerouting the splanchnic venous blood through an autologous graft from the superior mesenteric vein (SMV) into the Rex recess of the left portal vein, curing portal hypertension by doing so. General

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) are uncommon pancreatic masses which arise from amine precursor and uptake decarboxylation cells. They are classified as functional or nonfunctional based on the associated clinical symptoms. Insulinomas and gastrinomas are the most common functional tumors. PNETs are also classified based on their biologic behavior as benign or malignant. While most PNETs are sporadic, a small percentage are associated with syndromes such as multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1, von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, and are usually multiple in those cases. On imaging, most PNETs

Multiple bands and bandlike structures can be found within the cardiac chambers, which can be evaluated with various imaging modalities including echocardiography, CT, MRI, and invasive angiography. These bands can be classified as normal structures or normal variants, aberrant structures, or pathologic entities. Normal structures include the crista terminalis, taenia sagittalis, Chiari network, coumadin ridge, moderator band, papillary muscles, and chordae tendineae. Aberrant structures include aberrant papillary muscles, accessory chordae, false tendons, and accessory mitral valve tissue. Pa

In heart failure, extensive evaluation with modern non-invasive imaging modalities is needed to assess causes, pathophysiology, and haemodynamics, to determine prognosis and consider therapeutic options. This systematic evaluation includes a stepwise assessment of left ventricular size and function, the presence and severity of coronary artery disease, mitral regurgitation, pulmonary hypertension, right ventricular dilation and dysfunction, and tricuspid regurgitation. Based on this imaging-derived information, the need for specific therapies besides optimised medical therapy can be determined

Cardiac catheterization has greatly contributed to the progress made in the management of congenital heart diseases (CHD). Initially used in diagnosis, it allowed the understanding of heart diseases, their anatomy and hemodynamics. Gradually, the development of interventional cardiology has played a major role in the management of these malformations (Patent ductus arteriosus [PDA] and atrial septal defect [ASD] closure, pulmonary dilatation, percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation…). The development of such technology was made possible through the concomitant development of imaging techniqu

BACKGROUND: Renal aspergillosis is a rare infection that usually occurs in persons with a predisposition for this condition. Its differential diagnosis includes primary and metastatic renal malignancies, pyelonephritis and secondary abscess formation, granulomatous disorders, and renal infarction. We aim to stress the role of multimodality imaging and percutaneous biopsy in the diagnosis of this condition.
CASE REPORT: We present diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) and positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) findings in addition to conventional imaging modalities in a 55-year-o

Pericardial cysts, an uncommon benign congenital anomaly belonging to the category of mediastinal masses. Cysts are usually detected incidentally on chest radiography or echocardiography, being most patients asymptomatic. In some cases, however, symptoms and complications occur, like dyspnea, chest pain, or persistent cough. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are the imaging techniques of choice to diagnose pericardial cysts. The removal of pericardial cysts is restricted to the cases with an uncertain diagnosis or in the presence of symptoms.

Caseous mitral annulus calcification involving aortomitral curtain is a rare occurrence. We report a case of a 64-year-old woman with end-stage renal failure and a candidate for renal transplant who presented with late ST-elevation myocardial infarction. Intracoronary imaging, computed tomography cardiac imaging, and histopathology confirmed coronary embolus into the left main stem artery from an extensive caseous mitral annulus calcification.
