Serological Detection and Risk Analysis of Coxiella burnetii in Rodents of Punjab, Pakistan.

INTRODUCTION: Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever, remains poorly understood in Pakistan, despite its clinical relevance in both humans and ruminants. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of C. burnetii in rodents. METHODS: Rodents were captured in urban settings across three districts of Punjab, Pakistan. A total of 300 serum samples were collected from rodents belonging to the Muridae family (n = 268) and the Sciuridae family (n = 32). Samples were screened for C. burnetii antibodies using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: An overall seroprev

The Specificity of Epizootic and Epidemiological Processes in Natural Foci of Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome and Tick-Borne Encephalitis in Russia, as the Basis for the Prospects of Creating a Combined Vaccine for the Prevention of These Infections.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) are the most common viral diseases in Russia. HFRS is caused by six different types of hantaviruses: Hantaan, Amur, Seoul, Puumala, Kurkino, and Sochi, which are transmitted to humans through small mammals of the Muridae and Cricetidae families. TBE is caused by viruses belonging to five different phylogenetic subtypes. The similarities in the ecology of HFRS and TBE pathogens is presented here. Hantavirus-infected small mammals can transmit the virus to uninfected animals, and ticks can also transmit hantavirus to

Detection of Rickettsia spp. and host and habitat associations of fleas (Siphonaptera) in eastern Taiwan.

Rickettsia typhi and Rickettsia felis (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae) are two rickettsiae principally transmitted by fleas, but the detection of either pathogen has rarely been attempted in Taiwan. Of 2048 small mammals trapped in eastern Taiwan, Apodemus agrarius Pallas (24.5%) and Mus caroli Bonhote (24.4%) (both: Rodentia: Muridae) were the most abundant, and M. caroli hosted the highest proportion of fleas (63.9% of 330 fleas). Two flea species were identified: Stivalius aporus Jordan and Rothschild (Siphonaptera: Stivaliidae), and Acropsylla episema Rothschild (Siphonaptera: Leptopsyllida

Phylogenetic analysis of receptor FgfrL1 shows divergence of the C-terminal end in rodents.

FGFRL1 is a member of the fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) family. Similar to the classical receptors FGFR1-FGFR4, it contains three extracellular Ig-like domains and a single transmembrane domain. However, it lacks the intracellular tyrosine kinase domain that would be required for signal transduction, but instead contains a short intracellular tail with a peculiar histidine-rich motif. This motif has been conserved during evolution from mollusks to echinoderms and vertebrates. Only the sequences of FgfrL1 from a few rodents diverge at the C-terminal region from the canonical sequence

Evolutionary conservation of linkage groups: additional evidence from murid and cricetid rodents.

In Mus musculus, family Muridae, the glucosephosphate isomerase (Gpi-l), pink-eyed dilution (p), albinism (c), and beta-type globin (Hbb) loci are known to be linked in the order Gpi-l-p-c-Hbb. In Rattus norvegicus, another murid rodent, the p, c, and Hbb loci are known to be linked in the same order and with similar recombination frequencies. In Peromyscus maniculatus, family Cricetidae, it was previously known that p and c are linked and by analogy to Mus musculus that linkage group should be bounded by Gpi-l near p and by a beta-globin locus near c. Linkage has now been established between

Identification of potential hosts and vectors of scrub typhus and tick-borne spotted fever group rickettsiae in eastern Taiwan.

Scrub typhus and tick-borne spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsioses are transmitted by chiggers (larval trombiculid mites) and hard ticks, respectively. We assessed exposure to these disease vectors by extensively sampling both chiggers and ticks and their small mammal hosts in eastern Taiwan during 2007 and 2008. The striped field mouse Apodemus agrarius Pallas (Rodentia: Muridae) was the most common of the small mammals (36.1% of 1393 captures) and presented the highest rate of infestation with both chiggers (47.8% of 110 760) and ticks (78.1% of 1431). Morphometric and Molecular Insights into Hepatozoon spp. in Wild and Synanthropic Rodents from Southern and Southeastern Brazil.

Small rodents are known hosts of various pathogens, including Hepatozoon, but until now, in Brazil, only Hepatozoon milleri has been described in these animals. In this study, liver samples and blood smears were obtained from 289 rodents belonging to 14 Cricetidae and two Muridae species that had been captured in municipalities of the states of Paraná and Rio de Janeiro. Smears were stained with Giemsa, and gametocytes were detected via microscopy in 10.72% (n = 31/289) of samples, with these individuals representing three rodent species. Significant morphometric differences were observed in g

Observations of Breinlia booliati in a new host, Rattus rattus jalorensis, from Kuantan, state of Pahang, Malaysia.

Breinlia booliati Singh and Ho, 1973 is described from the Malaysian wood rat, Rattus rattus jalorensis Bonhote. The parasites presented here were originally discovered in 1955 in Kuantan, Malaysia, but were not classified until now. On the basis of morphological observations of anatomical structures and comparisons with other species of Breinlia, it was determined that the parasites were B. booliati. The parasites discussed here show slight deviation from B. booliati, but they do not warrant a new species classification. There is some variation in anatomical measurements, the number of male c

[Diversity of flea vectors as a function of plague foci].

The Indian model of plague transmission by Xenopsylla cheopis, discovered by P.L. Simond, has been largely adopted even though it is flawed. X. cheopis cannot be the primitive vector, for neither its nor the rats' cradle is the same as for plague. Furthermore, the insect's vital cycle is impaired by proventriculus blocking. The combination of three factors--the synathropic rat, X. cheopis and Yersinia pestis--coupled with man's seafaring was what led to the multiplication of plague foci. This in turn "Создано" the third pandemic only because the disease was thus spread to very diverse biogeogr

Parasites of mammals on the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, Socorro, New Mexico: Cuterebra austeni and C. neomexicana (Diptera:Oestridae) from Neotoma and Peromyscus (Rodentia:Muridae), 1991-1994.

In total, 6,486 rodents representing 3 families (Muridae, Heteromyidae, and Sciuridae) and 24 species were trapped May through August of 1991 through 1994. Of these, only the white-throated woodrat. Neotoma albigula Hartley; piñon mouse, Peromyscus truei Shufeldt; and white-footed mouse, P. leucopus Rafinesque, were infested with Cuterebra Clark larvae. Of the 594 N. albigula that were captured 103 (17.3%) were infested with 139 Cuterebra larvae with all infestations occurring in the throat region. N. albigula infestations were observed in 4 of 5 habitats sampled. The highest prevalence of inf

Polyamine uptake by a rodent filariid, Acanthocheilonema viteae (Nematoda: Filarioidea).

Helminth parasites lack the capacity to synthesize polyamines de novo. With the view to characterise alternative pools for the replenishment of polyamines, uptake of spermidine and spermine, were studied in Acanthocheilonema viteae, a parasite known to infect rodents. Motile worms recovered from the subcutaneous tissues of experimentally infected Mastomys natalensis were incubated in vitro with radiolabelled polyamines for the uptake assays. A time-dependent, temperature-sensitive, energy-requiring and saturable-uptake of the polyamines was observed. Male worms exhibited better uptake than the

Natural Babesia infection sought in black and Norway rats trapped in five Egyptian Governorates.

Babesiosis is a protozoal disease caused by members of the genus Babesia transmitted by the ixodid ticks. It is a parasite of various mammalian hosts as bovine (B. bovis), equine (B. equi), rodent (B. microti), canine (B. canis) and others. Human cases of babesiosis have been reported from several countries including Egypt. It is now well established that man may become infected (Fulminating or Subclinical) with several species of Babesia without prior splenectomy. In this paper, a total of 398 Rattus rattus and 90 R. norvegicus were trapped in Suez, Ismailia, Port Said, North Sinai and South

[Experimental transmission of Monanema nilotica El Bihari & coll., 1977, a filaria with skin-dwelling microfilaria parasitic in African murids].

The value of Monanema of murids as experimental models of ocular lesions due to onchocerciasis would be greatly increased if we could experiment with several host and parasite species since, in many cases, the lesions induced are more significant when the host-parasite association is poorly adapted. The life cycle of 2 isolates of Monanema nilotica is completed, one from Lemniscomys striatus from the Central african Republique and the other from Arvicanthis niloticus of Mali. As in M. globulosa, infective larvae develop in Ixodidae (Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Hyalomma truncatum); 20 to 30 la

Ecological aspects of the epidemiology of infection with leptospires of the Ballum serogroup in the black rat (Rattus rattus) and the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) in New Zealand.

Epidemiological aspects of infection with leptospires of the Ballum serogroup in black rats (Rattus rattus) and brown rats (Rattus norvegicus) are described. Rats inhabiting a variety of habitats were investigated and isolates identifed as belonging to the Ballum serogroup were obtained from 21 of 61 black rats (34%) and 63 of 243 brown rats (26%). The high level of endemic ballum serogroup infection in these species reported here has not been described in other countries. A statistical relationship was shown between the prevalence of infection in brown rat populations and population density b

Quinolones: novel probes in antifilarial chemotheraphy.

Quinolones have been discovered in our laboratory as a new class of antifilarial agents. This has led to the design, synthesis, and antifilarial evaluation of a number of N-substituted quinol-4(1H)-one-3-carboxamide derivatives 4-6. The macrofilaricidal activity of the target compounds was initially evaluated in vivo against Acanthoeilonema viteae by oral administration of 200 mg/kg x 5 days. Among all the synthesized compounds, 13 displayed activity, with the most potent compound (4a) exhibiting 100% macrofilaricidal and 90% microfilaricidal activities. Compound 4e elicited significant macrof

Further support for a Palaearctic origin of Leishmania.

The fossil record and systematics of murid rodents, reservoirs of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Palaearctic, Oriental, African, Nearctic and Neotropical, strongly support a Palaearctic origin of Leishmania. The fossil record and systematics of phlebotomine sand flies reinforce this idea. Interpretations of molecular data that place the origin of Leishmania in the Neotropical are inconsistent with the natural histories of reservoirs and vectors. The evolutionary pattern of New World rats (Sigmodontinae) indicates that they may be the most important reservoirs of zoonotic cutaneous lei

Involvement of the pineal gland in daily scheduling of the golden spiny mouse.

The light-dark cycle is the major time cue for daily and seasonal scheduling of physiological activities. However, non-photic cues (e.g. environmental and social constraints) may also play a significant role. A natural model exists in the golden spiny mouse (Acomys russatus) which is nocturnal when maintained alone but diurnal when sharing a habitat with its congener, the common spiny mouse (A. cahirinus). We have recently observed that the presence of A. cahirinus provokes a major change in the daily rhythms of body temperature (Tb), and urine volume without affecting the melatonin rhythm and
