Pathology of natural Francisella tularensis subsp. holarctica infection in two yellow-necked mice (Apodemus flavicollis).

BACKGROUND: Tularemia is a zoonosis caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis. It has a wide host range, which includes mammals, birds and invertebrates. F. tularensis has often been isolated from various species of small rodents, but the pathology in naturally infected wild rodent species has rarely been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we describe the pathology of tularemia in two naturally infected wild yellow-necked mice (Apodemus flavicollis). To visualize F. tularensis subsp. holarctica, indirect immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry were applied on tissue sections. Real

Leptospira spp. in Small Mammals from Areas with Low and High Human Hantavirus Incidences in South-West Germany.

INTRODUCTION: Leptospirosis is caused by Leptospira spp. and is considered the most widespread zoonotic disease worldwide. It mimics nephropathia epidemica in humans, a disease mainly caused by Puumala hantavirus (PUUV). Small mammals are reservoirs for Leptospira spp. and PUUV. Seewis virus (SWSV) is a shrew-borne hantavirus with unknown pathogenicity. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence for Leptospira spp. and the frequency of Leptospira-hantavirus co-infections in small mammals collected at locations with high and low incidences in humans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 2

Rickettsia species in fleas collected from small mammals in Slovakia.

Epidemiological and epizootiological studies of Rickettsia felis and other Rickettsia spp. are very important, because their natural cycle has not yet been established completely. In total, 315 fleas (Siphonaptera) of 11 species of Ceratophyllidae, Hystrichopsyllidae and Leptopsyllidae families were tested for the presence of Rickettsia species and Coxiella burnetii with conventional and specific quantitative real-time PCR assays. Fleas were collected from five rodent hosts (Myodes glareolus, Apodemus flavicollis, Apodemus agrarius, Microtus subterraneus, Microtus arvalis) and three shrew spec

An immunohistochemical study of the endocrine pancreas of the African ice rat, Otomys sloggetti robertsi.

The African ice rat, Otomys sloggetti robertsi, is a member of the subfamily Otomyinae, in the superfamily of Muroidea, to which all rodents belong. Very little is known about this unique family of rodents. The study reported here examines the endocrine pancreas of this species using immunohistochemical techniques. The islets of Langerhans were scattered in the exocrine pancreas and tended to be quite small. Scattered single endocrine cells (mostly immunoreactive for insulin) were found in the exocrine pancreas and were not generally associated with ducts (as marked by pan-cytokeratin labeling

African Spiny Mice (Acomys) Exhibit Mild Osteoarthritis Following Meniscal Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Hyaline cartilage has limited innate healing abilities and hyaline cartilage loss is a hallmark of osteoarthritis (OA). Animal models can provide important insights into cartilage regeneration potential. One such animal model, the African spiny mouse (Acomys), is capable of regenerating skin, skeletal muscle, and elastic cartilage. This study aims to evaluate whether these regenerative abilities protect Acomys with meniscal injury from OA-related joint damage and behaviors indicative of joint pain and dysfunction. DESIGN: Acomys received destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM)

RICTULARIA JIYEONI N. SP. (NEMATODA: RICTULARIIDAE) FROM THE STRIPED FIELD MOUSE, APODEMUS AGRARIUS, IN KOREA.

Rictularia jiyeoni n. sp. from the small intestine of the striped field mouse, Apodemus agrarius, in Korea, is described and illustrated. Specimens were studied using light and scanning electron microscopies. This rictulariid nematode is closest to the Rictularia species that have a reduced number of combs and spines. However, the new species can be differentiated from the other species of Rictularia by having 36-58 perioral denticles, a buccal capsule with a single esophageal tooth, and 37-44 pairs of combs and spines of which 32-37 are prevulvar and 5-11 are postvulvar.

The changing triad of plague in Uganda: invasive black rats (Rattus rattus), indigenous small mammals, and their fleas.

Rattus rattus was first reported from the West Nile Region of Uganda in 1961, an event that preceded the appearance of the first documented human plague outbreak in 1970. We investigated how invasive R. rattus and native small mammal populations, as well as their fleas, have changed in recent decades. Over an 18-month period, a total of 2,959 small mammals were captured, sampled, and examined for fleas, resulting in the identification of 20 small mammal taxa that were hosts to 5,109 fleas (nine species). Over three-fourths (75.8%) of captured mammals belonged to four taxa: R. rattus, which pre

Lassa Fever: Epidemiology, Clinical Features, Diagnosis, Management and Prevention.

Lassa fever outbreaks West Africa have caused up to 10,000 deaths annually. Primary infection occurs from contact with Lassa virus-infected rodents and exposure to their excreta, blood, or meat. Incubation takes 2 to 21 days. Symptoms are difficult to distinguish from malaria, typhoid, dengue, yellow fever, and other viral hemorrhagic fevers. Clinical manifestations range from asymptomatic, to mild, to severe fulminant disease. Ribavirin can improve outcomes. Overall mortality is between 1% and 15%. Lassa fever should be considered in the differential diagnosis with travel to West Africa. Ther

Anti-filarial activity of novel formulations of albendazole against experimental brugian filariasis.

The study was aimed at developing better orally active albendazole (ALB) formulations. Six formulations (ALB-1 to ALB-6) were prepared and tested against Brugia malayi in Mastomys coucha and jird (Meriones unguiculatus) at 200 mg/kg, orally, for 5 consecutive days. The anti-filarial efficacy was assessed against microfilariae (mf), adult worms and female reproductive potential. Three of the 6 ALB formulations showed greatly improved female worm sterilizing potential (ALB-1: 90%; ALB-3: 63%; ALB-4: 77% of untreated control) in B. malayi - M. coucha model. Sterilization efficacy of ALB-1 was als

Host Species and Meteorological Influences on the Prevalence of Babesia microti (Aconoidasida: Piroplasmida) in Wild Rodents: Insights From a Meta-Analysis in Japan.

Rodents play a central role as reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens, yet the ecological and meteorological factors affecting pathogen prevalence remain unclear. In this study, a meta-analysis was used to evaluate the influence of host species and meteorological factors on the prevalence of Babesia microti in two common Japanese field mice, Apodemus speciosus and A. argenteus. The data were collected from seven published studies conducted across Japan. To examine the effects of total annual precipitation, average annual temperature, and host species, generalized linear mixed models were employed. T

From development to regeneration: The spiny mouse as a model in neurobiology.

The African spiny mouse (Acomys dimidiatus) is a unique mammalian model capable of scarless tissue regeneration, extending to the nervous system. Unlike conventional rodents, Acomys show significantly higher levels of adult brain stem cells, enhanced functional plasticity after brain injury, and the ability to regenerate and regain function following severe spinal cord damage. While the regenerative capacity of the Acomys central nervous system (CNS) is only beginning to be explored, existing studies have already challenged the long-standing dogma that adult mammals are incapable of CNS recove

Isolation and Characterization of Distinct Rotavirus A in Bat and Rodent Hosts.

Rotavirus A (RVA) causes diarrheal disease in humans and various animals. Recent studies have identified bat and rodent RVAs with evidence of zoonotic transmission and genome reassortment. However, the virological properties of bat and rodent RVAs with currently identified genotypes still need to be better clarified. Here, we performed virus isolation-based screening for RVA in animal specimens and isolated RVAs (representative strains: 16-06 and MpR12) from Egyptian fruit bat and Natal multimammate mouse collected in Zambia. Whole-genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis revealed that the

Wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus L.) as intermediate host for Mesocestoides canislagopodis (Rudolphi, 1810) (Krabbe 1865) in Iceland.

Mesocestoides canislagopodis is a common parasite of the arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) in Iceland. In the past, household dogs (Canis familiaris) and cats (Felis catus) were also reported in Iceland to be infected. Recently, scolices of a non-maturing Mesocestoides sp. were detected in the intestines of the gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus), and tetrathyridia were isolated in the body cavity of rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) and subsequently described. All stages were confirmed, using both morphological and molecular methods, to belong to the same species, M. canislagopodis. In the present study, post
