Ancestral karyotype reconstruction provides insights into stepwise chromosome evolution and bract coloration in the banana family.

The banana family (Musaceae) exhibits remarkable diversity in karyotype structure and bract coloration, yet the evolutionary dynamics of chromosome rearrangements and the regulatory basis underlying color diversification remain poorly understood. Here, we present a telomere-to-telomere (T2T), gap-free genome assembly of Musa exotica, an ornamental species with brightly colored bracts, representing an early-branching lineage within sect. Callimusa (Musa L.). By integrating this high-quality genome with available Musaceae genomes, we reconstruct the ancestral Musaceae karyotype (AMK) with a hapl

Drivers of banana re-infection in newly planted gardens in banana bunchy top disease endemic zones: Implications for the recovery of banana production.

Understanding how crop pests and diseases spread is essential for designing effective integrated pest and disease management strategies. This study investigated the landscape, field design, and management factors associated with the persistence and re-infection of Banana Bunchy Top Disease (BBTD) in endemic smallholder systems. We surveyed 121 banana gardens that had been re-established with virus-free tissue-culture plantlets three years earlier to identify the combination of conditions linked to lower disease incidence, to identify candidate parameters to test in controlled evaluation of dis

Banana Bunchy Top Disease in Rwanda: Identifying Disease Presence and Potential Areas at Risk.

Banana bunchy top disease (BBTD) has been reported in southwestern Rwanda since the 1980s. Recent sporadic observations of BBTD in western and central regions, made by extension services and the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board, merited a comprehensive field survey across the country. This survey was performed in 2022 and 2023 to confirm and map the presence of BBTD in suspected areas in Rwanda. Combining the Rwandan survey with BBTD surveys in neighboring countries (eastern DR Congo, Burundi, and Uganda), a BBTD probability model was developed for Rwanda, taking into

Coccinellid predators of mealybugs infesting banana in South India, including a new species and a new record of Scymnus Kugelann (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), with notes on other natural enemies.

Several species of mealybugs infest various parts of bananas and plantains including foliage, fruits, rhizome and roots in all the major banana growing regions of India and cause moderate to occasionally serious damage but systematic attempts at documenting the mealybug pests of banana and their natural enemies are lacking in India. In this study, mealybugs infesting bananas and plantains in Tamil Nadu, South India, are documented along with their coccinellid predators and other natural enemies. The exotic Jack Beardsley mealybug, Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi Gimpel & Miller, was found to be a

Golden bananas in the field: elevated fruit pro-vitamin A from the expression of a single banana transgene.

Vitamin A deficiency remains one of the world's major public health problems despite food fortification and supplements strategies. Biofortification of staple crops with enhanced levels of pro-vitamin A (PVA) offers a sustainable alternative strategy to both food fortification and supplementation. As a proof of concept, PVA-biofortified transgenic Cavendish bananas were generated and field trialed in Australia with the aim of achieving a target level of 20 μg/g of dry weight (dw) β-carotene equivalent (β-CE) in the fruit. Expression of a Fe'i banana-derived phytoene synthase 2a (MtPsy2a) gene

Effects of Chemical Ripening With Calcium Carbide on Nutritional Composition, Antioxidant Capacity and Heavy Metal Accumulation in Climacteric Fruits.

Fruits are important dietary sources of nutrients, phytochemicals and antioxidants essential for human health. In many developing countries, calcium carbide (CaC2) is widely used as a low-cost artificial ripening agent despite its associated health risks. This study evaluated the impact of CaC2 ripening on the nutritional composition, phytochemical content, antioxidant properties and elemental profile of banana (Musa spp.), mango (Mangifera indica) and plantain (Musa paradisiaca). Fruits were naturally ripened (control) or treated with 10 or 30 g/kg CaC2. Standard analytical methods were used

An assessment of optimizing biofuel yield percentage using K-fold integrated machine learning models for a sustainable future.

Accelerating population and modernization has triggered a steady rise in energy demand and a significant rise in household waste, particularly municipal solid waste. In this context, waste-to-energy conversion has emerged as a sustainable solution. This study aims to maximize biofuel production yield using biomass-based banana peel catalyst waste by optimizing process parameters through machine learning models integrated with k-fold cross-validation. The models employed include Polynomial Regression (PR), Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), and Linear Regression (LR). The three key input v

Shared pedigree relationships and transmission of unreduced gametes in cultivated banana.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cultivated bananas resulted from inter(sub)specific hybridizations involving Musa species and subspecies (M. acuminata subspecies, M. schizocarpa, M. balbisiana) and the subsequent selection, centuries ago, of hybrids with parthenocarpic, seedless fruits. Cultivars have low fertility and are vegetatively propagated, forming groups of somaclones. Relatively few of them, mainly triploids, are grown on a large scale and characterization of their parental relationships may be useful for breeding strategies. Here we investigate parental relationships and gamete-type contributio

Caught on camera: Field imagery reveals the unexpected importance of vertebrates for biological control of the banana weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus Col. Curculionidae).

Understanding of ecological interactions is necessary for the application of biological control. Banana is the second most produced fruit worldwide and the banana weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus) is the most important pest of banana and plantain. Its biological control remains challenging because of the robustness and cryptic behaviour of the adult and the hidden development of larval stages. Researchers therefore tend to favour conservation biological control of this pest. The commonly used methods for measuring the effects of natural enemies on the regulation of this pest focus on invertebrate

Preparation and characterization of micellar nanoparticles using crude saponins from five Congolese plant species.

Nanoparticles (NPs) have significantly advanced medical applications, including drug delivery, immunotherapy, vaccines, and diagnostics. This versatility is partly due to the potential of tailoring NPs from multiple sources. Notably, saponins, amphiphilic plant metabolites, have shown great promise in NP formulation. This study explored the development of micellar NPs using saponin crude fractions (SCFs) extracted from five Congolese plant species: Millettia laurentii, Penthaclethra eetveldeana, Schwenckia americana, Musa paradisiaca, and Musa sapientum. Plant materials were subjected to histo

A Novel Protein Recovery Method via Gel Separation and Silica Columns Capable of Rapid Antigen Purification and Deep Proteomic Identification.

UNLABELLED: Gel electrophoresis is widely used for protein and nucleic acid analysis. Nucleic acid recovery from agarose gels is convenient and efficient, but protein recovery is not. This study aimed to develop and validate a novel method for recovering proteins from gels. METHODS: After protein separation on gels, excised gel slices containing target proteins are processed using the same silica-column workflow as that used for nucleic acid purification, but with buffers specifically adapted for protein recovery. This approach only requires brief centrifugation steps and avoids laborious ext

Covalent and hydrophobic interactions play important roles in the formaldehyde scavenging ability of banana condensed tannins in aqueous solution.

To characterize the interaction between banana condensed tannins (BCT) and formaldehyde as well as elucidate the involving mechanism, different techniques were utilized in the present study. Our results showed that BCT were a mixture of procyanidins and prodelphinidins with the degree of the polymerization of 2-9. With the increasing condensed tannin concentration (0.125-0.625 mg CE/mL), the formaldehyde scavenging ability of BCT (32.16-78.64 %) continuously enhanced. It was shown that formaldehyde could quench the fluorescence of BCT through a dynamic mechanism, while the binding of BCT and f

The case for the green banana: Using fruit to improve tenaculum placement simulation.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to identify a fruit that would resemble the 'feel' of a uterine cervix when compared to plastic pelvic models. STUDY DESIGN: A group of experienced clinicians tested six different fruits and evaluated their suitability as a cervical simulation for tenaculum placement. RESULTS: An unripe (green) banana was rated the highest in seven out of eight characteristics and was the only fruit to achieve a consensus for overall simulation above 70%. CONCLUSIONS: A green banana is an affordable and accessible option to simulate a cervix for procedures requiring

Pesticide use in banana plantations in Costa Rica - A review of environmental and human exposure, effects and potential risks.

Biodiversity is declining on a global scale. Especially tropical ecosystems, containing most of the planetary biodiversity, are at risk. Agricultural monocrop systems contribute to this decline as they replace original habitats and depend on extensive use of synthetic pesticides that impact ecosystems. In this review we use large-scale banana production for export purposes in Costa Rica as an example for pesticide impacts, as it is in production for over a century and uses pesticides extensively for more than fifty years. We summarise the research on pesticide exposure, effects and risks for a
