PURPOSE: Skeletal-muscle function is commonly assessed during isometric strength tests for both athletic and clinical populations. To assess neuromuscular performance, these are often analyzed by calculating peak force/torque and rate of force/torque development (RFD/RTD) variables using dynamometers, load cells, or force plates. These devices record a specific number of data points per second, known as the sampling rate, measured in samples per second (in hertz). It is unclear what the validity of sampling rates lower than the recommended 1000 Hz is for practical neuromuscular strength assess

Highly repetitive submaximal intermittent contractions of the forearm muscles during periods of 30-50 min partially explain why motorcycle races are so demanding for the neuromuscular system. This study investigated the contribution of central and peripheral mechanisms of fatigue on the exerted and contralateral extensor digitorum communis following an intermittent fatigue protocol (IFP) designed for motorcycle riders. 12 riders performed an IFP, which simulates the braking and throttle handle gesture. We examined the time course of recovery of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), M-wave, moto

PURPOSE: To examine the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on impairments and functional skills of a 13-year-old child with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (CP).
METHODS: NMES was administered to the right quadriceps muscles every other day for six weeks. Pre- and posttesting included assessment of strength using a hand-held dynamometer, spasticity using a KinCom isokinetic dynamometer, gait spatiotemporal parameters using GAITRite, and functional motor performance with the use of the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI).
RESULTS: After intervention, right

Lower limb isometric strength is crucial for predicting diseases, monitoring rehabilitation, and assessing activity levels. Manual testing lacks quantitative evaluation, while handheld dynamometers (HHDs) require skilled raters and isokinetic dynamometers are expensive and complex. Existing devices often focus on single-joint measurements for specific populations. To address the need for multi-joint quantitative muscle strength assessment, along with portability, affordability, and ease of use, this study developed the isometric dynamometer for the lower extremity (IDLE) to measure hip flexion

BACKGROUND: When interventions to the hand are aimed at improving function of specific fingers or the thumb, the RIHM (Rotterdam Intrinsic Hand Myometer) is a validated tool and offers more detailed information to assess strength of the involved joints besides grip and pinch measurements.
METHODS: In this study, strength was measured in 65 thumbs in 40 patients diagnosed with thumb hypoplasia. These 65 thumbs were classified according to Blauth. Longitudinal radial deficiencies were also classified. The strength measurements comprised of grip, tip, tripod and key pinch. Furthermore palmar abd

METHODS: 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Total of 422 subjects were screened for participation, and 46 met the inclusion criteria. Those were randomized into an experimental group (EG; n = 23) and control group (CG; n = 23). At the time of enrollment, all subjects had low BMD, vitamin D insufficiency, and were not practicing resistance ex

Isokinetic muscle strength measurements and functional tests are usually performed to evaluate ankle condition in chronic ankle instability (CAI), yet there is no clear demonstration of the relationship between isokinetic muscle strength and functional tests. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between isokinetic muscle strength and functional tests in CAI. Between April 2014 and August 2016, 103 patients with unilateral CAI were studied. Single-leg balance, single-heel raise, and single-leg squat tests were performed for static balancing assessment. Single-leg hop, do

BACKGROUND/AIM: All changes in the knee that appear after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) lesion lead to difficulties in walking, running, jumping especially during sudden changes of the line of movement. This significantly impairs quality of life of these subjects and leads to decrease in physical activity. Knee injuries make 5% of all most severe acute sport injuries. The aim of the study was to determine strength of the thigh muscles in persons with unilateral rupture of the ACL and to evaluate potential bilateral differences between healthy and injured leg.
METHODS: This study involved 1

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD) causes progressive muscle weakness, locomotor dysfunction, and postural instability, severely affecting quality of life. Longitudinal data on these changes remain limited. We quantified changes in muscle strength, locomotor performance, and postural control in adults with LOPD vs controls, aiming to identify the most sensitive motor parameters and determine key muscle contributors to locomotor and postural decline. We also defined clinically meaningful thresholds (minimal clinically important difference [MCID]) for sensitive parameters

OBJECTIVE: The strength of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles of the amputated limb in below-knee amputees was evaluated. DESIGN: A descriptive study based on clinical measurements of muscle strength. BACKGROUND: The residual limb of below-knee amputees is less active in daily functions. As a result, atrophy of the thigh muscles in the affected limb is a common finding. Quality of standing and gait performances depend on the strength of these muscles, which activate the knee of the amputated limb. METHODS: Isokinetic concentric and eccentric, as well as isometric, strength of thigh muscles w

OBJECTIVE: In attempts to improve the quality of life of women, continuous projects are sought between rehabilitation intervention and engineering. Using the knowledge of the pelvic floor muscle (PFM) physiology, assessment and training methods are developed to reduce lower urinary tract symptoms such as urinary incontinence. Therefore, this paper covers the design and implementation of a portable vaginal dynamometer.
METHODS: A PFM probe is designed, 3D printed, assembled, and tested in ten women to assess its acceptability and usability. The feedback from the usability study is used to opti

Traditional (indirect) techniques, such as electromyography and nerve conduction velocity measurement, do not reliably predict intensive care unit-acquired muscle weakness and its clinical consequences. Therefore, quantitative assessment of skeletal muscle force is important for diagnosis of intensive care unit-acquired motor dysfunction. There are a number of ways for assessing objectively muscle strength, which can be categorized as techniques that quantify maximum voluntary contraction force and those that assess evoked (stimulated) muscle force. Important factors that limit the repetitive

BACKGROUND: Hamstring injury is one of the most common injuries affecting gaelic footballers, similar to other field sports. Research in other sports on whether residual hamstring weakness is present after hamstring injury is inconsistent, and no study has examined this factor in irish gaelic footballers. The aim of this study was to examine whether significant knee muscle weakness is present in male Irish gaelic footballers who have returned to full activity after hamstring injury.
METHODS: The concentric isokinetic knee flexion and extension strength of 44 members of a university gaelic foo

PURPOSE: The study was designed to determine whether relationships exist among knee muscle spasticity, isometric knee muscle strength, knee muscle balance, gross motor function, and walking efficiency in children with spastic cerebral palsy and to evaluate the relative contributions of impairment measures to functional outcome measures.
METHODS: Twenty-seven children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy participated. Knee muscle strength and spasticity were measured by a hand-held dynamometer and the Ashworth Scale, respectively. Functional abilities were assessed by the Gross Motor Function
