Violent and prosocial music: Evidence for the impact of lyrics and musical tone on aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Although there is a large research base on the psychological impacts of violent and prosocial visual media, there is little research addressing the impacts of violent and prosocial music, and which facets of the music have the greatest impact. Four experiments tested the impact of lyrics and/or musical tone on aggressive and prosocial behavior, and on underlying psychological processes, using purpose-built songs to avoid the effect of music-related confounds. In study one, where mildly aggressive, overtly aggressive and violent lyrics were compared to neutral lyrics, any level of lyrical aggre

When music matters: how music app use buffers the relationship between boredom proneness, loneliness and Internet Gaming Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) is increasingly prevalent among adolescents and has been associated with psychological factors such as boredom proneness and loneliness. However, the role of everyday digital media use, particularly music app use, in these associations remains unclear. This study aimed to examine whether music app use moderates the associations of boredom proneness and loneliness with IGD risk among secondary vocational school students. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 2,341 secondary vocational school students in Shanghai, China, from September t

Differences between Supportive Music and Imagery and Music Listening during Outpatient Chemotherapy and Potential Moderators of Treatment Effects.

BACKGROUND: Supportive music and imagery and music listening interventions have been effective in decreasing distress and improving mood in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, but it is unclear whether the two interventions differ in their treatment benefits. Furthermore, previous studies have not examined moderators to determine which subgroup(s) of patients may benefit most from each intervention. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of supportive music and imagery compared with preferred music listening on responsiveness to music therapy, distress, anxiety and depression, and benefit find

Family-centered music therapy-Empowering premature infants and their primary caregivers through music: Results of a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: In Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) premature infants are exposed to various acoustic, environmental and emotional stressors which have a negative impact on their development and the mental health of their parents. Family-centred music therapy bears the potential to positively influence these stressors. The few existing studies indicate that interactive live-improvised music therapy interventions both reduce parental stress factors and support preterm infants' development. METHODS: The present randomized controlled longitudinal study (RCT) with very low and extremely low birt

[Perioperative music-induced analgesia : Comparison of the effect of music on pain between preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative application].

BACKGROUND: Despite suitable analgesia procedures and interventions only approximately 24% of inpatients with strong to very strong pain receive adequate treatment. Besides opioids, which are associated with numerous side effects and risks, non-pharmacological approaches are increasingly being used. In this context, one of the oldest known methods are music interventions; however, the state of evidence is heterogeneous and there are no explicit manuals and recommendations for the effective implementation of music interventions. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to determine the optimal time point

Music-based interventions for chronic pain management.

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (intervention). The objectives are as follows: Primary objective To evaluate the benefits and harms of music-based interventions (MBIs) for chronic pain management in adults with pain lasting more than 12 weeks, comparing MBIs with the following comparators: active care, placebo, or no treatment/waitlist control. Specifically, we aim to assess the effects of MBIs on critical outcomes, such as pain intensity, pain-related distress, and pain interference with daily functioning. Secondary objectives To evaluate the effects of MBIs on important outcomes, in

Cochlear Implant Electrode Placement and Music Perception.

IMPORTANCE: Cochlear implants enable improvements in speech perception, but music perception outcomes remain variable. Image-guided cochlear implant programming has emerged as a potential programming strategy for increasing the quality of spectral information delivered through the cochlear implant to improve outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To perform 2 experiments, the first of which modeled the variance in music perception scores as a function of electrode positioning factors, and the second of which evaluated image-guided cochlear implant programming as a strategy to improve music perception with a c

Music-related abilities among readers with dyslexia.

Research suggests that a central difficulty in dyslexia may be impaired rapid temporal processing. Good temporal processing is also needed for musical perception, which relies on the ability to detect rapid changes. Our study is the first to measure the perception of adults with and without dyslexia on all three dimensions of music (rhythm, pitch, and spectrum), as well as their capacity for auditory imagery and detection of slow changes, while controlling for working memory. Participants were undergraduate students, aged 20-35 years: 26 readers with dyslexia and 30 typical readers. Participan

Psychedelics and music: neuroscience and therapeutic implications.

From the beginning of therapeutic research with psychedelics, music listening has been consistently used as a method to guide or support therapeutic experiences during the acute effects of psychedelic drugs. Recent findings point to the potential of music to support meaning-making, emotionality, and mental imagery after the administration of psychedelics, and suggest that music plays an important role in facilitating positive clinical outcomes of psychedelic therapy. This review explores the history of, contemporary research on, and future directions regarding the use of music in psychedelic r

Does Music Positively Impact Preterm Infant Outcomes?

BACKGROUND: The hospital environment leaves preterm infants (PTIs) exposed to various stressors that can disrupt their growth and development. Developmental interventions such as music may be an important strategy to mitigate PTI's stress. This brief evaluates current evidence regarding the impact of music therapy on outcomes for PTIs. PURPOSE: The question guiding this brief is "Do various types of music therapy positively affect physiologic indicators, feeding behaviors/length of stay (LOS) and pain management outcomes for PTIs?" [Music, composers and psychopathology: the psychiatrist's view].

A first reason for the psychiatrist to be interested in music, musicians and their artistic work, comes from the strong biographical and scientific evidence linking mood disorders and in particular, bipolar disorder, to artistic creativity. Moreover, a family association between psychopathology and creativity has been found in several studies. Important changes in mood, but also cognition, personality and behaviour can occur during all phases of manic-depressive illness and these changes have potentially important effects on creativity and productivity. Those changes are usually opposite in ma

Alcohol brand appearances in US popular music.

AIMS: The average US adolescent is exposed to 34 references to alcohol in popular music daily. Although brand recognition is an independent, potent risk factor for alcohol outcomes among adolescents, alcohol brand appearances in popular music have not been assessed systematically. We aimed to determine the prevalence of and contextual elements associated with alcohol brand appearances in US popular music. DESIGN: Qualitative content analysis. SETTING: We used Billboard Magazine to identify songs to which US adolescents were most exposed in 2005-07. For each of the 793 songs, two trained code

Lefthandedness among students of architecture and music.

Three groups of subjects (60 students of architecture and 88 of music, and 87 from a general student group) were assessed on lefthandedness, reading problems, dyslexia, and stuttering. There was a higher frequency of lefthandedness among students of architecture, as well as a higher frequency of reading difficulties, dyslexia and stuttering among students of architecture and music, than the comparison group. These findings were discussed in relation to Geschwind's hypotheses.

Music therapy for children with Rett syndrome.

Access to a handicapped child with Rett syndrome may be attempted through its eyes and by means of music. The receptivity for rhythm and melodies must be located within a primitive region of the hierarchical structure of the brain because even severely retarded children do respond to music. If purposefully applied with several instruments music therapy can bring about at least a temporary cessation of the stereotypic movements in children with Rett syndrome. Many years of experience attest to the feasibility of this approach.

Medical services for outdoor rock music festivals.

This paper describes the medical services provided at an outdoor rock music festival near Toronto and reviews similar services at other outdoor concerts as reported in the literature. Between 0.5% and 1.5% of concertgoers were reported to have used medical services, proportions that may be useful in planning for future festivals. Most of the medical problems encountered were minor, although life-threatening problems occasionally occurred. Alcohol and drug abuse were common but led to major medical problems in only small proportions of patients. Guidelines for planning are suggested that includ
