Myofibroblastic, fibroblastic and/or myoid lesions are rare in the breast but comprise the majority of mammary mesenchymal spindle cell lesions. Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare disease. We report a rare case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor occurs in the mediastinum. Chest contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) showed a heterogeneously enhanced irregular mass in the anterior mediastinum; a small pericardial effusion was also noted. The diagnosis was confirmed by histopathology and immunohistochemical study.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are rare benign clinical and pathological entities. IMTs have been described in the lungs, abdomen, retroperitoneum, and extremities but rarely in the head and neck region. A 38-year-old man presented with headache, right exophthalmia, and right 6th nerve palsy. A CT scan revealed enlargement of the right cavernous sinus and osteolytic lesions of the right sphenoid and clivus. MR imaging showed a large tumor of the skull base which was invading the sella turcica, right cavernous sinus, and sphenoidal sinus. A biopsy was performed and revealed an IMT.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a neoplasm of intermediate biologic potential. Only a few cases of IMT in the spermatic cord have been reported. Recently the so-called plexiform angiomyxoid myofibroblastic tumors (PAMT) have emerged as a new entity of gastric soft tissue tumors and the light microscopic and immunohistological characteristics have now been well described. Until now PAMTs have not yet been reported in the German speaking literature. Worthy of note is that PAMTs can be diagnosed safely in sufficient biopsy material which enables adequate therapeutic steps to be initiated without delay, because PMATs although considered to be benign, can cause serious complications.

This report describes a 9-year-old boy who was found to have an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor completely occluding the right mainstem bronchus. Initial subtotal resection at an outside facility resulted in prompt recurrence of the tumor. At our institution, total resection with bronchotomy and pericardial patch repair resulted in an excellent outcome with no evidence of recurrence at 1 year post-resection.

BACKGROUND: Vulvar sarcomas are rare tumors. A distinctive low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma is described.
CASE: A 46-year-old female presented with a progressively enlarging vulvar mass. Pathological evaluation revealed a low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma. The immunophenotype is outlined and ultrastructural features are highlighted. Tumor cells were positive for p53 protein, smooth muscle actin, steroid receptors, and showed myofibroblastic differentiation on electron microscopy. The patient has been followed for >14 months without evidence of recurrence.
CONCLUSION: The tumor was positive
