FOSL1 immunohistochemistry clarifies the distinction between desmoplastic fibroblastoma and fibroma of tendon sheath.

AIMS: Although desmoplastic fibroblastoma (DFB) and fibroma of tendon sheath (FTS) are well-established entities, they may show overlapping clinicopathological features. In addition, cytogenetic data showing a shared 11q12 rearrangement in a small number of cases suggest a close link between these entities. A recent microarray study revealed up-regulation of FOSL1 mRNA in DFBs with 11q12 rearrangement. The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between DFB and FTS. METHODS AND RESULTS: We tested 42 cases diagnosed originally as either DFBs or FTSs for interobserver concordance base

High-Grade Sarcomas with Myogenic Differentiation Harboring Hotspot PDGFRB Mutations.

PDGFRB-activating mutations have been reported in pediatric myofibroma and myofibromatosis. However, recurrent gain-of-function PDGFRB mutations have not been documented in sarcomas with myogenic differentiation. Driven by occasional sarcomas harboring PDGFRB mutations, we investigated their prevalence and clinicopathologic and genomic features in a large cohort of sarcomas. An institutional targeted DNA next-generation sequencing database was searched for sarcomas with myogenic differentiation harboring hotspot PDGFRB gene alterations. Among 3300 patients with sarcomas, 21 (0.6%) patients wer

A distinctive myointimal proliferation ('myointimoma') involving the corpus spongiosum of the glans penis: a clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical analysis of 10 cases.

This study details the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features associated with 10 cases of a distinctive myointimal proliferation involving the corpus spongiosum of the glans penis. Patients ranged in age from 2 to 61 years old (mean age, 29 yrs) and presented with a mass that varied in size from 0.5 to 1.9 cm in greatest dimension. The process was said to be present from 4 days to more than 6 months before surgical intervention. In each case, microscopic examination revealed almost identical histology. There was a prominent, often occlusive, fibrointimal proliferation with plexifor

Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor Presenting as Gross Hematuria in a Pediatric Patient With VACTERL Syndrome Following Bladder Augmentation.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMT) are rare and poorly understood inflammatory neoplasms. Most commonly occurring in the liver and gastrointestinal tract, cases of bladder involvement have been rarely reported. Bladder IMT generally presents with gross hematuria and can be differentiated from other bladder tumors by expression of anaplastic lymphoma kinase. We report the occurrence of an Bladder IMT detected following lower urinary tract reconstruction with bladder augmentation.

Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) and inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT): a representative literature review occasioned by a rare IMT of the transverse colon in a 9-year-old child.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) and inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) represent different entities. However, it is only in recent years that this has been taken into increasing consideration. Some authors still use both terms synonymously or interchangeably. Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a real neoplasm because of the proliferation of myofibroblastic cells. Inflammatory pseudotumor is a more inflammatory reactive or regenerative entity and shows an overlapping with immunoglobulin G4-related disease. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: To analyze the current situation,

A case of an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the mastoid presenting with chronic suppurative otitis media.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors, also known as inflammatory pseudotumors, include a diverse group of lesions characterized by inflammatory cell infiltration and variable fibrotic responses. Their occurrence in the temporal bone is unusual. We present a case of an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the mastoid bone in a 55-year-old female who complained of repeated otorrhea and a hearing impairment. On an otoscopic exam, her tympanic membrane was perforated. The computed tomographic imaging revealed a soft-tissue density-filled middle ear and mastoid with sclerotic bony change. The initi

Mesenchymal Neoplasms of Salivary Glands: A Clinicopathologic Study of 68 Cases.

Salivary gland neoplasms are uncommon, and most exhibit epithelial differentiation. Mesenchymal neoplasms of the salivary gland are rare, and the incidence ranges from 1.9% to 5%. The aim of this study is to identify the types and clinical-pathological features of mesenchymal salivary neoplasm and review their differential diagnosis. A retrospective search for mesenchymal neoplasms of salivary glands from our institution's pathology archives from the 2004-2021 period and consultation files of one of the authors (AER) was performed. The clinical data were obtained from available medical records

Use of angioembolization as an effective technique for the management of pediatric solid tumors.

PURPOSE: In oncology practice, angioembolization has been reported for tumor reduction before surgery, treatment of life-threatening conditions, and for palliative care. Nevertheless, the overall experience with angioembolization for the treatment of tumors is limited. We report our experience in 7 nonvascular solid pediatric tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was carried out of medical records from pediatric patients (0-18 years) with solid nonvascular tumors who underwent angioembolization in the last 5 years at our institution. RESULTS: Seven patients underwent emboliza

Urachal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor with ALK gene rearrangement: a study of urachal remnants.

OBJECTIVES: Abnormalities of the urachus are rare among children and include a patent tract and cyst formation. These structures can also be affected by infection and abscess development. They are usually diagnosed during infancy and treated by surgical resection. Involvement of this remnant by either benign or malignant tumors is very infrequent. A few cases of mesenchymal tumors, such as desmoid tumor and leiomyoma, involving the urachus have been described in published reports. METHODS: We studied an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor arising from the urachus in a 10-year-old boy. In addit

Immunoreactivity for calretinin and keratins in desmoid fibromatosis and other myofibroblastic tumors: a diagnostic pitfall.

Calretinin is an intracellular calcium-binding EF-hand protein of the calmodulin superfamily. It plays a role in diverse cellular functions, including message targeting and intracellular calcium signaling. It is expressed in the mesothelium, mast cells, some neural cells, and fat cells, among others. Because of its relative specificity for mesothelial neoplasms, calretinin is widely used as one of the primary immunohistochemical markers for malignant mesothelioma and in differentiating it from adenocarcinoma. On the basis of our sporadic observation on calretinin immunoreactivity in desmoid fi

Mesenchymal neoplasms of the tongue: A clinicopathologic study of 93 cases.

Neoplasms of the tongue are relatively common, and the vast majority are epithelial in phenotype. Although uncommon, a diverse and distinctive array of mesenchymal neoplasms arises in this anatomic site. To increase our understanding of these lesions, we reviewed our experience of MNs of the tongue and described their clinicopathologic features. The pathology archives from 2005 to 2021 and the consultation files of one of the authors were queried for all MNs of the tongue. We reviewed the histologic slides and ancillary studies and obtained clinical data from the available medical records. Nin

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor: comparison of clinicopathologic, histologic, and immunohistochemical features including ALK expression in atypical and aggressive cases.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a neoplasm of intermediate biologic potential. In this study, we report a subset of IMTs with histologic atypia and/or clinical aggressiveness that were analyzed for clinicopathologic features, outcome, and immunohistochemical expression of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) and other markers to identify potential pathologic prognostic features. Fifty-nine IMTs with classic morphology (5 cases), atypical histologic features (21 cases), local recurrence (27 cases), and/or metastasis (6 cases) were studied. Immunohistochemistry was performed for ALK1 and

Phenotypic characterization of perivascular myoid cell neoplasms, using myosin 1B, a newly identified human pericyte marker.

Our aims were to identify pericyte-specific markers for the analysis of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded human tissue samples, and to characterize perivascular myoid cell neoplasms phenotypically. Previously identified pericyte markers failed to distinguish pericytes from other cellular types, such as vascular smooth muscle cells (vSMCs) and fibroblasts, in immunohistochemistry analysis. However, we compared gene expression profiles between pericytes, vSMCs, and fibroblasts, and performed human skin vasculature immunohistochemistry analysis, which led to the identification of myosin 1B (MYO1B

Specificity of paediatric jawbone lesions: tumours and pseudotumours.

INTRODUCTION: Characteristics and epidemiology of jaw tumours have been described mostly in adults. Compared with their adult counterparts, childhood jaw tumours show considerable differences. The aim of this study was to describe the different jaw tumours in children, define diagnostic tools to determine their specificity and describe optimal treatment. METHODS: All children patients with jaw lesions, excluding cysts, apical granuloma and osteitis were included in our study between 1999 and 2009. The medical records were analyzed for clinical, radiological, and pathological findings, treatme

Inoperable Renal Malignant Glomus Tumor, the answers for all the "W's"?

Glomus tumor, arising from glomus bodies (specialized neurovascular structures involved in thermoregulation), commonly occurs in extremities and rarely in viscera. The spectrum of glomus tumors range from benign tumors to tumors with uncertain malignant potential to tumors of the malignant subtype. A vast majority of visceral glomus tumors are benign. Most common visceral tumors arise in the gastrointestinal tract. Glomus tumors of the kidney are a rare entity of which malignant glomus tumors are exceedingly rare. The index patients in the existing case reports were middle-aged males. We repor
