Otoscopic and audiological findings in different populations of 5-14 year-old schoolchildren in Colombia.

OBJECTIVE: To present the otoscopic and audiological findings of studies carried out in groups of 5-14 year old schoolchildren in diverse indigenous, White, and African descended communities in the Republic of Colombia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study is descriptive and cross-sectional. We obtained a convenience sample for the analysis. We define acute otitis media (AOM), (bulging or redness); tympanic perforation (TP), (disruption of continuity in the tympanic membrane) and sequelea (scarring, myringosclerosis, retractions, secrections). Our results are described as frequencies in p

PD98059 inhibit the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts in the formation of tympanosclerosis via ERK1/2-MAPK signaling pathway.

Tympanosclerosis (TS) has become a common pathological condition of the middle ear, but the underlying mechanism of it is still ambiguous. It was found that osteoprotegerin/receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (OPG/RANKL) axis played an important role in the development of TS and was regulated by the extracellular signal regulated kinase 1/2-mitogen activated protein kinase (ERK1/2-MAPK) pathway. However, whether ERK1/2-MAPK pathway mediates the occurrence of TS by regulating OPG/RANKL axis has not been reported. In this study, MAPK and calcium pathway were found significantly a

[Characteristics of middle ear cholesteatoma with tympanicsclerosis].

Objective:To compare the preoperative presentation, intraoperative findings, and postoperative outcomes between middle ear cholesteatoma with tympanosclerosis (MECwTS) and middle ear cholesteatoma without tympanosclerosis (MECw/oTS), thereby investigating the clinical characteristics of MECwTS. Methods:A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 120 patients with middle ear cholesteatoma. Patients were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of concomitant tympanosclerosis: the MECwTS group (n=49) and the MECw/oTS group (n=71). All patients underwent preoper

PAI-1 inhibits development of chronic otitis media and tympanosclerosis in a mouse model of otitis media.

CONCLUSION: Bullae of type 1 plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) knockout (KO) mice showed low levels of inflammation against nontypable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) at the early stage of otitis media (OM). However, PAI-1 KO mice fail to terminate inflammation, which may significantly contribute to the development of tympanosclerosis in PAI-1 KO mice. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of PAI-1 in the pathogenesis of OM and subsequent tympanosclerosis. METHODS: OM was induced with NTHi in PAI-1 KO and background control C57BL/6 mice. mRNA expression of PAI-1, tissue-type plasminogen act

Long-term tympanic membrane pathology dynamics and spontaneous healing in chronic suppurative otitis media.

BACKGROUND: Children in the developing parts of the world have a high prevalence of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). It is estimated that 65 to 330 million people worldwide have CSOM, yet very little is known about the natural course of the disease. The Inuit population of the Arctic regions is among those with the highest prevalences of CSOM. The aim of this study was to examine the long-term tympanic membrane changes since childhood among Inuit adolescents in Greenland and estimate the proportion of individuals affected by CSOM. METHODS: Follow-up study (2009) on a population-based

Infiltration of immunocompetent cells in the middle ear during acute otitis media: a temporal study.

HYPOTHESIS: The inflammatory response to acute otitis media (AOM) is a chain reaction involving, among others, macrophages, B lymphocytes, and T lymphocytes that vary in number on different days during the infection. The response is thought to eventually contribute to tympanosclerosis (TS). BACKGROUND: In humans, TS and myringosclerosis (MS) are obscure sequelae of chronic otitis media. MS is also commonly seen in children who have had acute purulent otitis media or secretory otitis media or after treatment with ventilation tubes in the tympanic membrane (TM). It causes hearing disability, es

Ectopic Mineralization and Conductive Hearing Loss in Enpp1asj Mutant Mice, a New Model for Otitis Media and Tympanosclerosis.

Otitis media (OM), inflammation of the middle ear, is a common cause of hearing loss in children and in patients with many different syndromic diseases. Studies of the human population and mouse models have revealed that OM is a multifactorial disease with many environmental and genetic contributing factors. Here, we report on otitis media-related hearing loss in asj (ages with stiffened joints) mutant mice, which bear a point mutation in the Enpp1 gene. Auditory-evoked brainstem response (ABR) measurements revealed that around 90% of the mutant mice (Enpp1asj/asj) tested had moderate to sever

Ossicular Chain Reconstruction in a Developing Country.

OBJECTIVES: In Ethiopia, 2-stage operations with middle ear prostheses are economically unfavorable. We hypothesized that single-stage autologous ossiculoplasty results in acceptable tympanic membrane (TM) and hearing improvements in a setting of limited resources. METHODS: One hundred eighty-eight patients (197 ears) who underwent 1-stage autologous ossiculoplasty for ossicular dysfunction are presented. All but 14 of these ears also had perforations of the TM. Conditions of the middle ear were granulation tissue, ossicular disruption only, tympanosclerosis, and cholesteatoma. Reconstruction

Gene expression profile of collagen types, osteopontin in the tympanic membrane of patients with tympanosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Tympanosclerosis is a pathological process involving the middle ear. The hallmark of this disease is the formation of calcium deposits. In the submucosal layer, as well as in the right layer of the tympanic membrane, the calcium deposits result in a significant increase in the activity of fibroblasts and deposition of collagen fibers. OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to examine the expression level of genes encoding collagen type I, II, III and IV (COL1A1, COL2A1, COL3A1, COL4A1) and osteopontin (SPP1) in the tympanic membrane of patients with tympanosclerosis.
