Myxidium scripta n. sp. identified in urinary and biliary tract of Louisiana-farmed red-eared slider turtles Trachemys scripta elegans.

During a necropsy investigation of a mortality event occurring at a turtle farm in Assumption Parish, Louisiana, spores of a myxozoan were identified in the renal tubules in 3 of 6, the gall bladder lumen in 2 of 6, and the bile ductule in 1 of 6 red eared slider turtles Trachemys scripta elegans. In total, myxozoa were identified in 4 of 6 turtles. In 1 turtle, renal tubules contained numerous mature spores, had epithelial hyperplasia, granulomatous transformation, compression of adjacent tubules and interstitial lymphocytic nephritis. The genus of myxozoan was Myxidium, based on spore morpho

Poor population recovery of lake Washington Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in Pacific Northwestern USA may be associated with disease caused by Ceratonova shasta in an urban-influenced watershed.

Understanding the effects of anthropogenic changes on fish disease is vital for supporting mitigative actions for fisheries population recovery. The Lake Washington watershed in the Pacific Northwestern United States is influenced by high urban development and climate change, compromising the sustainability of anadromous salmon. We investigated Ceratonova shasta, a myxozoan parasite, in Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha to determine the impacts of C. shasta-induced enteronecrosis during salmon freshwater migrations within this watershed. All sampled adult Chinook Salmon returning to an e

New species of Myxidiidae Thélohan, 1892 (Myxosporea: Bivalvulida) found in characiform fish from the basin of Tocantins River in eastern Brazilian Amazonia.

Coelozoic parasites of the family Myxidiidae were observed in fish of the order Characiformes captured in the middle Tocantins River, Maranhão, Brazil, within the transition between the Cerrado savanna biome and the eastern extreme of the Brazilian Amazon Forest. The analysis of the morphological characteristics of the parasites, complemented with a Bayesian phylogenetic analysis, supported the description of new specie Myxidium imperatrizensis n. sp., found parasitising the gallbladder of specimens of the fish Triportheus angulatus. The study is also only the second report of the occurrence o

Influence of season and site location on European cultured sea bass parasites in Corsican fish farms using indicator species analysis (IndVal).

The parasites of 536 European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, were studied between January 2012 and December 2013 in six Corsican fish farms. The indicator value (IndVal) method, which combines measures of fidelity and specificity, has been used in this study. Because of its resilience to changes in abundance, IndVal is a particularly effective tool for ecological bioindicator. The IndVal method showed how season can influence the occurrence of parasite species in cultured sea bass and also identified parasites as bioindicators relative to fish farm location. The combination of specificity and

Effects of Different Preservatives During Ecological Monitoring of Myxozoan Parasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae Causing Proliferative Kidney Disease (PKD) in Salmonids.

Effective sample preservation is essential in large-scale population monitoring, particularly for molecular genetic analyses of pathogens, and for measuring disease symptoms in hosts. In such monitoring cases, disease symptoms can indicate poor habitat health, as they often coincide with elevated temperatures and suboptimal environmental conditions. This study examines the effect of two preservatives; 95% ethanol and 99% isopropanol on the assessment of proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in the renal tissue of young-of-the-year brown trout (Salmo trutta). Specifically, we studied the effect of

Ceratomyxa gracillima n. sp. (Cnidaria: Myxosporea) provides evidence of panmixia and ceratomyxid radiation in the Amazon basin.

We describe a new freshwater myxosporean species Ceratomyxa gracillima n. sp. from the gall bladder of the Amazonian catfish Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii; the first myxozoan recorded in this host. The new Ceratomyxa was described on the basis of its host, myxospore morphometry, ssrDNA and internal transcribed spacer region (ITS-1) sequences. Infected fish were sampled from geographically distant localities: the Tapajós River, Pará State, the Amazon River, Amapá State and the Solimões River, Amazonas State. Immature and mature plasmodia were slender, tapered at both ends, and exhibited vermifor

Ultrastructure of novel thrombocytes in the dog snapper Lutjanus jocu.

Myxosporean cysts containing spores of Henneguya sp. were observed in the gills of the dog snapper Lutjanus jocu. Adjacent to the cysts were capillaries, allowing observation of peripheral blood cells. Numerous white blood cells displaying uncommon cytoplasmic projections were observed amongst the erythrocytes. Their morphology allowed them to be identified as thrombocytes (TCs). Each TC displayed 18-26 cytoplasmic projections, most of which were in close proximity to erythrocytes. At their apical end, each cytoplasmic projection presented an ellipsoidal vacuole (c. 0·6 µm × 0·3 µm) from which

Proliferative kidney disease in rainbow trout: time- and temperature-related renal pathology and parasite distribution.

Proliferative kidney disease is a parasitic infection of salmonid fishes caused by Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae. The main target organ of the parasite in the fish is the kidney. To investigate the influence of water temperature on the disease in fish, rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss infected with T bryosalmonae were kept at 12 degrees C and 18 degrees C. The number of parasites, the type and degree of lesions in the kidney and the mortality rate was evaluated from infection until full development of disease. While mortality stayed low at 12 degrees C, it reached 77% at 18 degrees C. At 12 d

Immunohistochemical detection and gene expression of TNFα in turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) enteromyxosis.

Enteromyxum scophthalmi (Myxozoa) constitutes one of the most devastating pathogens for turbot (Scophthalmus maximus, L.) aquaculture. This parasite causes a severe intestinal parasitosis that leads to a cachectic syndrome with high morbidity and mortality rates for which no therapeutic options are available. Presence of inflammatory infiltrates, increased apoptotic rates and epithelial detaching have been described at intestinal level, as well as leukocyte depletion in lymphohaematopoietic organs. Previous investigations on enteromyxosis in turbot showed the high susceptibility of this specie

Transcriptomic signatures differentiating carrier and dead-end fish hosts of proliferative kidney disease.

INTRODUCTION: Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae is the causative agent of proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in salmonids. Brown trout function as a carrier host, while rainbow trout serve as a dead-end host. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these host-specific differences remain poorly understood. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to identify host-specific transcriptomic signatures distinguishing carrier and dead- end host. METHOD: Comparative transcriptomic analysis of infected kidneys from brown trout and rainbow trout was performed to identify differential gene expression

Morphological and molecular characterization of Henneguya cystigena n. sp. (Cnidaria, Myxosporea) parasitizing the alimentary tract of yellowfin seabream, Acanthopagrus latus, in the East China Sea.

A novel myxosporean species was identified. The species formed spherical to ellipsoidal pseudocysts within the alimentary tract wall of a yellowfin seabream Acanthopagrus latus fished in the East China Sea. Histological examination confirmed that pseudocysts were localized within the submucosal layer of the stomach wall. Round to ellipsoidal myxospores exhibited two posterior caudal appendages, consistent with the morphological characteristics of the genus Henneguya. The myxospore body measured 9.6 ± 0.5 (8.6-10.6) μm in length, 7.3 ± 0.4 (6.8-7.9) μm in width, and 6.0 ± 0.2 (5.5-6.4) μm in th

A checklist of parasites of freshwater fish of the British Isles-Kennedy revisited, reviewed and reassessed.

This review addresses the current state of knowledge regarding freshwater fish parasites in the British Isles, highlighting the significant gap since Kennedy's seminal 1974 work (Journal of Fish Biology 6: 613-644). Despite subsequent efforts by others to produce checklists in 1992 and 2016, comprehensive updates to parasite distribution patterns and species records have been limited. The paper emphasises the importance of accurate parasite checklists for understanding the status of and changes to endemic species baselines, climate change impacts, managing fish translocations, and identifying

A comprehensive genome-wide association study and genomic prediction in olive flounder for assessing disease resistance to Enteromyxum leei.

Enteromyxosis, or emaciation disease, caused by myxosporean parasites of the Enteromyxum genus, results in significant economic losses in aquaculture, particularly affecting adult flounders. Although the pathogen has been identified, effective treatments for Enteromyxum infections remain limited. In this study, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) and genomic prediction (GP) were conducted to evaluate Enteromyxum leei resistance in a flounder population using a high-density single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panel. Fish were categorized based on infection severity, and disease-related trai

Rapid Clearance of Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae Spores by Freshwater Sponge Ephydatia muelleri: Potential Implications for Controlling Proliferative Kidney Disease in Salmonids.

Host-parasite interactions are influenced by both abiotic and biotic factors. While abiotic drivers, particularly temperature, have received considerable attention in recent years due to global climate change, the role of biotic factors remains comparatively underexplored. The malacosporean parasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (Tb), which causes proliferative kidney disease in salmonids, is a well-documented example, where elevated temperature and eutrophication have been shown to intensify disease prevalence and severity. In this study, we investigated whether freshwater sponges, known for
