Sensitive electrochemical detection of total sugars in food using NiFe alloy nanowires.

An innovative electrochemical sensor is introduced based on a nickel-iron (NiFe) alloy, designed for rapid, cost-effective, and straightforward sugar determination in food. The sensor features vertically aligned NiFe nanowire arrays, providing a high surface area for enhanced performance. Sensor calibration was performed for various mono- and disaccharide reducing sugars. In the linear range 0.05-0.3 mM, sensors exhibited a sensitivity of 0.642 µA µM⁻¹·cm⁻², with a detection limit of 2.57 µM for monosaccharides and a limit of quantification of 14 µM. In the same linear range, for disaccharides

Unexpected phosphorus doping routine of planar silicon nanowires for integrating CMOS logics.

Complementary doping control in silicon nanowire (SiNW) channels is crucial for the construction of high-performance CMOS logics. Though planar in-plane solid-liquid-solid (IPSLS) growth, with an amorphous Si (a-Si) thin film as a precursor, has demonstrated a precise and scalable integration of orderly SiNWs, a complementary and tunable n-type doping has not been accomplished. This has been hindered by the fact that the phosphorus (P) gas dopants will react with the indium (In) catalyst droplet to form insoluble InP precipitates. Nevertheless, we herein report on an unexpected discovery that

Beyond linearity: bent crystalline copper nanowires in the small-to-moderate regime.

Several models can describe the nonlinear response of 1D objects to bending under a concentrated load. Successive stages consisting of geometrical and, additionally, mechanical non-linearity can be identified in moderately large extensions. We provide an explicit bending moment function with terms accounting for the linearity (Euler-Bernoulli), quasi-linearity, geometrical and finally, mechanical non-linearity as global features of a moderately large elastic deformation. We apply our method, also suitable for other metals, to the experimental data of Cu nanowires (NWs) with an aspect ratio of

Wireless Monitoring Using a Stretchable and Transparent Sensor Sheet Containing Metal Nanowires.

Mechanically and visually imperceptible sensor sheets integrated with lightweight wireless loggers are employed in ultimate flexible hybrid electronics (FHE) to reduce vital stress/nervousness and monitor natural biosignal responses. The key technologies and applications for conceptual sensor system fabrication are reported, as exemplified by the use of a stretchable sensor sheet completely conforming to an individual's body surface to realize a low-noise wireless monitoring system (<1 µV) that can be attached to the human forehead for recording electroencephalograms. The above system can disc

Copper Nanowires: A Substitute for Noble Metals to Enhance Photocatalytic H2 Generation.

Microwave-assisted hydrothermal approach was developed as a general strategy to decorate copper nanowires (CuNWs) with nanorods (NRs) or nanoparticles (NPs) of metal oxides, metal sulfides, and metal organic frameworks (MOFs). The microwave irradiation induced local "super hot" dots generated on the CuNWs surface, which initiated the adsorption and chemical reactions of the metal ions, accompanied by the growth and assembly of NPs building blocks along the metal nanowires' surfaces. This solution-processed approach enables the NRs (NPs) @CuNWs hybrid structure to exhibit three unique character

The mechanical response of hIAPP nanowires based on different bending direction simulations.

Amyloid proteins, implicated in numerous aging-related diseases, possess remarkable mechanical properties. Polymorphism leads to different arrangements of β sheets in amyloid fibrils, which changes the characteristics of the hydrogen bond network that determines their mechanical properties and structural characteristics. We performed bending simulations using molecular dynamics methods under constant-velocity conditions in different bending directions. Two different fibril structures, parallel/homo and parallel/hetero, of hIAPP amyloids were considered. Though the bending configuration influen

Scalable alignment of CdS nanowires based on efficient roll-on transfer technique.

A roll-on transfer strategy is developed to enable large-scale and uniform assembly of CdS nanowires on various rigid and flexible substrate materials. In this method, the CdS nanowires were synthesized by the hydrothermal method. The dispersed CdS NWs could be firstly aligned and selectively deposited at the micro/nanochannels between aligned nanofibers on the surface of the donor roller as a result of evaporation-induced flow and capillary action, and then the directional and aligned transfer of the CdS NWs from the donor roller to a receiver substrate via roll-on transfer technique. Finally

Color-selective photocurrent enhancement in coupled J-aggregate/nanowires formed in solution.

J-aggregates are ordered clusters of coherently coupled molecular dyes, (1) and they have been used as light sensitizers in film photography due to their intense absorptions. Hybrid structures containing J-aggregates may also have applications in devices that require spectral specificity, such as color imaging or optical signaling. (2) However the use of J-aggregates in optoelectronic devices has posed a long-standing challenge (3, 4) due to the difficulty of controlling aggregate formation and the low charge carrier mobility of many J-aggregates in solid state. In this paper, we demonstrate a

Phase selection enabled formation of abrupt axial heterojunctions in branched oxide nanowires.

Rational synthesis of nanowires via the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism with compositional and structural controls is vitally important for fabricating functional nanodevices from bottom up. Here, we show that branched indium tin oxide nanowires can be in situ seeded in vapor transport growth using tailored Au-Cu alloys as catalyst. Furthermore, we demonstrate that VLS synthesis gives unprecedented freedom to navigate the ternary In-Sn-O phase diagram, and a rare and bulk-unstable cubic phase can be selectively stabilized in nanowires. The stabilized cubic fluorite phase possesses an unusua

Vertically Aligned Te Nanowire Array Growth by Geometric Confinement.

Tellurium nanowires have demonstrated great potential for various applications, such as thermoelectric devices, optoelectronics, and biosensors, due to their excellent electronic, thermal, and optical properties. However, lacking an effective method to prepare vertically aligned and uniformly distributed tellurium nanowire arrays is a bottleneck for their practical applications. In this study, we successfully fabricated aligned tellurium nanowires (A-Te NWs) on a Pt/polyimide/glass substrate using a seedless chemical liquid-phase method. Pt square arrays were employed as the catalytic layer to

Memcapacitive-Dominated Reservoir Computing with Self-Organizing Nanowire Networks.

Nanowire networks have emerged as a promising platform for physical reservoir computing. However, networks based on memristive switching exhibit inherent limitations in dynamical richness and short-term memory capacity. Memcapacitors are expected to overcome these dynamical constraints through their topology-dependent dynamics. In this work, inspired by the distributed processing of neural systems, we endow Ag nanowire networks with memcapacitive properties via a temperature-modulated fabrication process, realizing a multi-path channel-dependent reservoir system with richer reservoir dynamics

Flexible thermoelectric devices hold significant promise in wearable electronics owing to their capacity for green energy generation, temperature sensing, and comfortable wear. However, the simultaneous achievement of excellent multifunctional sensing and power generation poses a challenge in these devices. Here, ordered tellurium-based hetero-nanowire films are designed for flexible and multifunctional thermoelectric devices by optimizing the Seebeck coefficient and power factor. The obtained devices can efficiently detect both object and environment temperature, thermal conductivity, heat pr

Fracture behaviour of silver nanowire films during shear deformation.

Silver nanowire films have a wide application prospect in flexible electronics, while it is a noticeable problem that the silver nanowires break due to the shear force under the mass production film cutting or extreme service conditions. In this paper, the shear fracture behaviour of silver nanowire films with different structural parameters was studied under the extreme shear failure tests. The load-displacement curve was obtained from the nano-indentation test, while the hardnessH, the elastic modulusEand the plastic properties represented by the ratio ofH3/E2of silver nanowire films with di

Experimental and Theoretical Evaluations of the Galvanomagnetic Effect in an Individual Bismuth Nanowire.

The galvanomagnetic effect is evaluated experimentally and theoretically in an individual bismuth nanowire encapsulated within a quartz template. A small section of the side surface of the encapsulated bismuth nanowire is exposed using focused ion beam processing, and a total of six carbon film electrodes are fabricated on the exposed nanowire surface by in situ deposition in order to be able to perform electrical measurements on the nanowire. The results show that the galvanomagnetic effect in the nanowire is affected by carrier collisions at the nanowire boundary; this is particularly the ca

[SOI-nanowire biosensor for the detection of D-NFAT 1 protein].

The nanowire (NW) detection is one of fast-acting and high-sensitive methods allowing to reveal potentially relevant protein molecules. A NW biosensor based on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI)-structures was used for biospecific label-free detection of NFAT 1 (D-NFAT 1) oncomarker in real time. For this purpose, SOI-nanowires (NWs) were modified with aptamers against NFAT 1 used as molecular probes. It was shown that using this biosensor it is possible to reach the sensitivity of ~10(-15) M. This sensitivity was comparable with that of the NW biosensor with immobilized antibodies used as macromo

Nanowired drug delivery to enhance neuroprotection in spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a serious clinical situation for which no suitable drug therapy exists. SCI often results in paraplegia or quadriplegia and, apart from the personal trauma leads to huge costs to society for rehabilitation or day-to-day life support. Sensory motor dysfunction following SCI is mainly a consequence of the slowly progressing cord pathology after primary injury that worsens over tine. Thus, almost all sensory and motor nerve control and pathways passing through spinal cord and reflexes are compromised in SCI patients. As a result their peripheral nervous system, autonom

In situ observation of the electrochemical lithiation of a single SnO₂ nanowire electrode.

We report the creation of a nanoscale electrochemical device inside a transmission electron microscope--consisting of a single tin dioxide (SnO(2)) nanowire anode, an ionic liquid electrolyte, and a bulk lithium cobalt dioxide (LiCoO(2)) cathode--and the in situ observation of the lithiation of the SnO(2) nanowire during electrochemical charging. Upon charging, a reaction front propagated progressively along the nanowire, causing the nanowire to swell, elongate, and spiral. The reaction front is a "Medusa zone" containing a high density of mobile dislocations, which are continuously nucleated

First-principles studies of SnS2 nanotubes: a potential semiconductor nanowire.

First principles calculations are used to predict the stability and electronic structures of SnS(2) nanotubes. Optimization of several structures and their corresponding strain energies confirm the stability of SnS(2) nanotube structures. Band structure calculations show that SnS(2) nanotubes could have moderate band gaps regardless of their chirality. It suggests that SnS(2) nanotubes would be well-suited to use as semiconductor wires in nanoelectronic devices if they are synthesized. Adsorption of NH(3) onto SnS(2) is also investigated and discussed with regard to potential sensor applicatio

Low Noise X-Ray Detectors From Template-Confined 1D Metal-Free Perovskite Nanowires.

High-performance and low-cost X-ray detector is urgently needed for applications in medical imaging and wearable electronics. 1D lead-free perovskite DABCO-NH4I3 (DABCO denotes N-N'-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium) has emerged as a promising candidate material due to its non-toxicity, aqueous solution processability, and excellent carrier transport properties. However, to produce high quality single crystals via solution methods remains challenging due to the long growth period which limits their X-ray detection performance and practical application. In this work, we innovatively employed anodic a

Electrochemical and Biological Evaluation of Patterned TiO2@TiC-Nanowires for Bio-Interface Electrode.

The next generation of bioelectronic interfaces demands materials that integrate biocompatibility, robust electrochemical performance and architectural functionality. Here, we introduce a low-temperature fabrication approach for patterned titanium oxide-coated titanium carbide nanowires (P-TiO2@TiC-NWs), utilizing room-temperature sputter deposition, avoiding high-temperature carbide synthesis. TiO2@TiC-NWs combine the high-aspect-ratio architecture of TiO2-NWs with the electrochemical performance of TiC, providing a tunable platform for bioelectronic interface design. By tuning sputtering pre
