Increasing colorectal cancer incidence trends among younger adults in Canada.

Recent analyses in the United States have shown an overall decrease in the incidence of colorectal cancer despite contrasting increases in younger age groups. We examined whether these cohort trends are occurring in Canada. Age-specific trends in colon and rectal cancer incidence in Canada from the National Cancer Incidence Reporting System (1969-1992) and the Canadian Cancer Registry (1992-2012) were analyzed. We estimated annual percent changes (APC) with the Joinpoint Regression Program from the Surveillance Epidemiology, and End Results Program. Birth cohort effects were estimated using 5-

Mortality of early treatment for radiation-induced brain necrosis in head and neck cancer survivors: A multicentre, retrospective, registry-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The evidence of early treatment for radiation-induced brain necrosis (RN) in head and neck cancer survivors remains insufficient. This study aimed to determine whether early anti-RN treatment was associated with lower mortality. METHODS: In this cohort study, we utilized data from the Study in Radiotherapy-related Nervous System Complications (NCT03908502) and Hong Kong Cancer Registry. We included consecutive patients who had received radiotherapy (RT) for head and neck cancers and had subsequently developed RN between Jan 8, 2005 and Jan 19, 2020. Patients who had tumor progress

Trends and projected burden of early-onset gastrointestinal malignancies in the United States: a population-based analysis (2001-2021).

BACKGROUND: Early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) has become a serious public health concern in recent years. This study aimed to contribute to the growing body of evidence on the rise in early-onset gastrointestinal (GI) cancers and anatomical subsites of early-onset CRC, and to explore racial and sex disparities in these trends. METHODS: We analyzed data from the National Program of Cancer Registries-Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (2001-2021) for people aged 20 to 49 years with GI cancers. The dataset covers cancer incidence rates for approximately 98% of the US populati

Childhood cancer incidence and survival in Japan and England: A population-based study (1993-2010).

The present study aimed to compare cancer incidence and trends in survival for children diagnosed in Japan and England, using population-based cancer registry data. The analysis was based on 5192 children with cancer (age 0-14 years) from 6 prefectural cancer registries in Japan and 21 295 children diagnosed in England during 1993-2010. Differences in incidence rates between the 2 countries were measured with Poisson regression models. Overall survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Incidence rates for Hodgkin lymphoma, renal tumors and Ewing sarcomas in England were more than tw

Evolving epidemiological patterns of thyroid cancer and estimates of overdiagnosis in 2013-17 in 63 countries worldwide: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of thyroid cancer has been increasing in many countries, mainly due to overdiagnosis. Given these rapid changes, we aim to assess the specific features of the thyroid cancer diagnosis epidemic and provide estimates of overdiagnosis across countries spanning five continents and identify areas in which coping strategies are needed. METHODS: Two types of data were retrieved from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Global Cancer Observatory database. The long-term annual incidence of thyroid cancer by sex and 5-year age group for all ages from 1980 to

Pituitary germinomas: a multi-institutional study analyzing patient demographics and management patterns.

PURPOSE: Intracranial germinomas are exceedingly rare tumors found in the pineal and suprasellar regions. The extremely low incidence of pituitary germinoma has resulted in a significant gap in knowledge regarding its demographics, management, and treatment outcomes. We present the largest multicenter analysis of pituitary germinomas to date, focused on analyzing demographic and management patterns. METHODS: This study utilizes the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program (2004-2016) to study patients with a primary intracranial germinoma of the p

Aetiology of cancer in Asia.

Cancer has become the leading cause of death in many Asian countries. There is an increasing trend in breast, prostate and colon cancers, which are considered as typical of economically developed countries. Although breast and prostate cancer rates are still lower than in western countries, they are particularly rapidly increasing. In this paper, we review recently published literature to identify important etiologic factors affecting the cancer risk in Asian populations. Infectious agents such as Helicobacter pylori, hepatitis B and C viruses, and human papillomavirus were shown to be associa

Cancers of the lung and bronchus are broad terms for a common, deadly, complex, heterogenous and histologically diverse group of respiratory malignancies that comprise the leading cause of global cancer incidence and mortality accounting for an estimated 2 million diagnoses and 1.8 million deaths, and occurs through a complicated multistage process that results from the combination of carcinogen exposure, the primary etiology of which is tobacco smoking and genetic susceptibilities. This pathologic scourge is the second most common cause of cancer in men and women (after prostate and breast ca

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia: an assessment of international incidence, survival, and disease burden.

PURPOSE: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a rare hematological malignancy. With the recent introduction of a classification system for hematopoietic and lymphoid neoplasms, more comprehensive assessment of ALL epidemiology is now possible. In this study, we describe recent international incidence of ALL and project the annual number of diagnoses to 2025. We also estimate relative survival and average potential years of life lost (AYLL) to assess the societal burden of ALL. METHODS: Age-specific incidence data for ALL from select cancer registries in different geographies were obtained fr

Trends in incidence, metastasis, and mortality from thyroid cancer in the USA from 1975 to 2019: a population-based study of age, period, and cohort effects.

BACKGROUND: In the USA, the incidence of thyroid cancer increased rapidly for several decades, although some studies have suggested that it has now plateaued or even begun to decrease. We aimed to establish whether incidence in the USA has truly decreased or merely plateaued, and to understand some of the underlying factors driving these changes. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, population-based study using the National Cancer Institute (NCI)'s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database and the National Center for Health Statistics database. We used incidence data from these r

Years of life lost due to central nervous system tumor subtypes in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Years of life lost (YLL) is a disease burden measure quantifying the number of years lost due to premature mortality for a given disease. The present study sought to assess YLL for primary brain and other central nervous system (CNS) tumor histopathologies in the United States. METHODS: Mortality, incidence, and life expectancy data for mortalities occurring in 2018 were obtained from the National Vital Statistics System and the National Program of Cancer Registries. Tumor-specific YLL were estimated by subtracting age of death from projected life expectancy; mean YLL (mYLL) was d

Comparison of Prognostic Factors for Merkel Cell Carcinoma, Mucosal Melanoma and Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma: Insights into Their Etiologies.

Little is known about the epidemiology of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) and mucosal melanoma (MM). Using the United States (US) National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program data, we compared MCC and MM with cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) with respect to incidence rates and prognostic factors to better understand disease etiologies. We describe the proportional incidences of the three cancers along with their survival rates based on 20 years of national data. The incidence rates in 2000-2019 were 203.7 per 1,000,000 people for CMM, 5.9 per 1,000,000 p
