Spatial and Seasonal Dynamics of Microbial and Phytoplankton Communities and Factors Influencing the Surface Water and Sediments of the Ponjavica River in the Ponjavica Nature Park.

Microorganisms are key bioindicators of changes in biogeochemical cycles and the ecological status of aquatic ecosystems. In this paper, seasonal changes in culturable microbial groups, phytoplankton, and physicochemical water characteristics were examined as integrated indicators of environmental status in the Ponjavica River (Ponjavica Nature Park, Serbia). Sampling was conducted at six sites (P2-P7) in 2021, with two campaigns carried out in spring (May) and autumn (November). At all sites, the number of microorganisms was higher in sediment than in water, confirming the importance of sedim

Life after precocious male maturation in a semelparous salmonid: A physiological perspective in Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha.

Spring Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, are typically semelparous, dying after a single lifetime spawning event. However, observations of survival following maturation in males that mature at age-1 (common names: precocious parr or microjacks) have been documented, but little is known regarding their post-maturation physiology. In this investigation, mature microjacks were fed either a high or low winter ration to examine potential effects of feeding regime on mortality, smoltification and rematuration the following year. We measured a series of physiological factors including surviva

Drivers of Seasonal Variation in Tuberculosis Incidence: Insights from a Systematic Review and Mathematical Model.

BACKGROUND: Seasonality in tuberculosis incidence has been widely observed across countries and populations; however, its drivers are poorly understood. We conducted a systematic review of studies reporting seasonal patterns in tuberculosis to identify demographic and ecologic factors associated with timing and magnitude of seasonal variation. METHODS: We identified studies reporting seasonal variation in tuberculosis incidence through PubMed and EMBASE and extracted incidence data and population metadata. We described key factors relating to seasonality and, when data permitted, quantified s

Differences among six woody perennials native to Northern Europe in their level of genetic differentiation and adaptive potential at fine local scale.

The ability of perennial species to adapt their phenology to present and future temperature conditions is important for their ability to retain high fitness compared to other competing plant species, pests, and pathogens. Many transplanting studies with forest tree species have previously reported substantial genetic differentiation among populations within their native range. However, the question of "how local is local" is still highly debated in conservation biology because studies on genetic patterns of variation within and among populations at the local scale are limited and scattered. Spatial and temporal trends and flow dynamics of glyphosate and other pesticides within an agricultural watershed in Argentina.

In the present study, we evaluated the spatial and temporal trends of current-use pesticides in surface water and sediments as well as their relationship with hydrological stream dynamics within the agricultural watershed of El Crespo stream (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina). We sampled 2 contrasting sites: site 1 (upstream), surrounded by agricultural lands, and site 2 (downstream), surrounded by natural grasslands. Most of the applied pesticides (glyphosate, 2,4-D, atrazine, tebuconazole, and imidacloprid) were detected at high frequencies in surface water samples at both sites. However, on

Assessing Natural Product-Drug Interactions: An End-to-End Safety Framework.

The use of natural products (NPs), including herbal medicines and other dietary supplements, by North Americans continues to increase across all age groups. This population has access to conventional medications, with significant polypharmacy observed in older adults. Thus, the safety of the interactions between multi-ingredient NPs and drugs is a topic of paramount importance. Considerations such as history of safe use, literature data from animal toxicity and human clinical studies, and NP constituent characterization would provide guidance on whether to assess NP-drug interactions experimen

The inactivated Cowdria ruminantium vaccine for heartwater protects against heterologous strains and against laboratory and field tick challenge.

We previously described that an inactivated vaccine against heartwater prepared from Cowdria ruminantium (Crystal Springs strain) organisms and administered in complete Freund's adjuvant (cFA) protected sheep against homologous needle challenge. Further studies, described herein, demonstrated that this vaccine protected 100% of sheep against death on challenge with laboratory-infected ticks and with field ticks in a heartwater endemic farm, whereas a mortality rate of 44% and 62%, respectively, was recorded in the control sheep. Subsequently, the Mbizi strain of C. ruminantium was incorporated

About the pathogenesis of the so-called adult acquired pes planus.

Even overlooking the scarcely significance nature of the term "flat", in the pathogenesis of the adult acquired flat foot deformity, we must consider also the spring ligament degenerative pathology, that I called "degenerative glenopathy", due to its reference to the glenoid, without a primitive posterior tibial tendon disease. The glenoid structure intervenes in the cotyloid structure (acetabulum) of the "coxa pedis". In many cases the aetiological moment must be clarified finding of the accessory navicular bone. Its position between the posterior tibial tendon and glenoid explains a possible

Distinctive Microbial Processes and Controlling Factors of Nitrous Oxide Emission in an Agricultural River Network: Perspective in Riparian Zone Type and Season.

The emission of nitrogen oxides (N2O) in rivers is an important source of potent greenhouse gases. However, the mechanism at the interface between rivers and riverbanks remains unclear. This study quantified N2O emissions from natural and artificial riparian zones across seasons and explored the microbial mechanisms affecting N2O production and consumption in an intensive agricultural river network in China. Significant seasonal variability in N2O emission rates was observed (p < 0.05), with mean values of 0.56 ± 0.09 mmol·m-2·h-1 in autumn and 1.13 ± 0.32 mmol·m-2·h-1 in spring. In spring, em

Influence of residential greenness and season on discontinuation of medication treatment for opioid use disorder across rural to urban community types.

INTRODUCTION: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are standard of care for opioid use disorder (OUD), but high rates of treatment discontinuation limit their impact on recovery. Nature exposure and engagement holds promise as a potential adjunctive treatment to MOUD through stress reduction and mental health benefits. This study evaluated whether nature exposure influenced MOUD treatment participation by analyzing associations of residential greenness with MOUD discontinuation across a diverse geography in Pennsylvania, while considering interrelated factors-season and community type.

Description of Rhipicephalus hibericus phenology and main hosts in its type locality.

We conducted a study on different aspects of the biology and ecology of the recently described Rhipicephalus hibericus Millán, Rodríguez-Pastor and Estrada-Peña (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in agricultural and riparian habitats of its type locality (Zaragoza, north-east Spain), with a focus on seasonal dynamics of questing individuals and the identification of the main hosts (both through live-trapping and molecular blood meal analysis in questing adults). We further evaluated the effect of potential wildlife hosts (micro and meso-mammals, and birds), habitat (agrarian and natural) and climate variable

Application of high-performance liquid chromatography for research of salicin in bark of different varieties of Salix.

Willow (Salix L.) species are widely spread in Lithuanian natural dendroflora. Willow bark contains active substances known for anti-inflammatory properties and is known as a phytotherapeutic precursor of aspirin. Bark extracts are components of analgesic and antirheumatic preparations. Therapeutic effectiveness is associated with salicin (2-(hydroxymethyl)phenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside), which turns into salicylic acid. Increasing attention to natural preparations gives primary importance to research of plants. This study focused on 12 willow taxa and employed routine pharmacopoeia methods. Hi

Pineal melatonin concentrations during day and night in the adult hedgehog: effect of a light pulse at night and superior cervical ganglionectomy.

The European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus L.) is a hibernating mammal and seasonal breeder in which numerous circadian and circannual rhythms are entrained and synchronized by photoperiod. The present study was undertaken in order to establish the involvement of the pineal gland in transducing the photoperiodic message in this species. Pineal melatonin concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay in female hedgehogs kept under natural climatic conditions and killed during the light:dark (L:D) cycle in spring and autumn, after the interruption of darkness by a 45 min light pulse, and aft

Oscillation, synchrony, and multi-factor patterns between cereal aphids and parasitoid populations in southern Brazil.

In different parts of the world, aphid populations and their natural enemies are influenced by landscapes and climate. In the Neotropical region, few long-term studies have been conducted, maintaining a gap for comprehension of the effect of meteorological variables on aphid population patterns and their parasitoids in field conditions. This study describes the general patterns of oscillation in cereal winged aphids and their parasitoids, selecting meteorological variables and evaluating their effects on these insects. Aphids exhibit two annual peaks, one in summer-fall transition and the othe

Population Dynamics of Off-Host Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) Larvae in Response to Habitat and Seasonality in South Texas.

The cattle tick, Rhipicephalus microplus (Canestrini), is an economically destructive arthropod because of its ability to vector bovine babesiosis. It is known that cattle ticks can spend 80-90% of their lifecycle as questing larvae, yet the effect of climatic factors on their off-host behavior and survival is unclear. The goal of this study was to measure the effects of specific ecological factors on off-host questing larvae in nature. The study was conducted in a south Texas pasture over a two-year period, during which time larval populations were surveyed. Simultaneously, weather variables-

Effects of Sterilization Cycles on PEEK for Medical Device Application.

The effects of the sterilization process have been studied on medical grade thermoplastic polyetheretherketone (PEEK). For a reusable medical device, material reliability is an important parameter to decide its lifetime, as it will be subjected to the continuous steam sterilization process. A spring nature, clip component was selected out of a newly designed medical device (patented) to perform this reliability study. This clip component was sterilized for a predetermined number of cycles (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 20…100) at 121 °C for 30 min. A significant decrease of ~20% in the compression force of
