Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common nonmelanoma skin cancer in humans, and is the most common malignant neoplasm among adults in the US. The peak incidence occurs in the seventh decade of life. Childhood onset of BCC is rare and usually associated with genetic disorders such as basal cell nevus syndrome, Bazex syndrome, albinism, and xeroderma pigmentosum or due to radiation therapy. A total of 87 human specimens with 10 histological types of primary neoplasm were studied immunohistochemically with monoclonal antibodies specific for beta-hexosaminidase (Hex). High levels of Hex were found in malignant neoplasms of the skin, cervix, colorectum and in benign as well as neoplastic plasma cells, while no activity was detected in normal epidermis, normal colorectal epithelium or benign naevi. We present a case of granular cell atypical fibroxanthoma of the scalp. The neoplasm occurred as a tender nodule on the frontal scalp of an 82-year-old Caucasian man. Histology demonstrated a diffuse proliferation of atypical epithelioid cells with abundant granular cytoplasm. Many of the cells had large irregular nuclei and atypical mitotic figures were present. Tubulin is the major constituent protein of microtubules. In mammals, there are seven beta-tubulins and six alpha-tubulins. Each beta-tubulin isotype has a unique tissue distribution. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of actinic skin lesions in patients with basal cell carcinoma of the head.

The clinical differential diagnosis of violaceous plaques on the face is broad and includes both neoplasms and inflammatory dermatoses. We report the first case of a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) superficial to an underlying granuloma faciale (GF). This is a single case report with clinicopathological correlation. Histological examination of a skin biopsy from the cheek revealed superficial BCC and GF. This case constitutes the first reported finding of coincident GF and BCC.

Chronic sun exposure is responsible for changes in skin texture, pigmentation, vascularity, maturation, and production of neoplasms. A 78% decrease in the lifetime incidence of basal and squamous cell carcinoma has been reported with regular use of SPF 15 sunscreen for the first 18 years of life. Actinic keratoses, sun-induced premalignant lesions of the skin, can be eliminated by mechanical and medication therapies. 5-fluorouracil therapy can be effective treatment for widespread actinic damage.
