Endocrine therapy is a required element of the management of premenopausal women with early-stage steroid hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. There is uncertainty about how best to implement that therapy using the strategies of tamoxifen and estrogen deprivation as well as how to integrate these approaches with chemotherapy. Other research focuses on identification of improved markers for endocrine response or resistance and on the special side effects of endocrine therapy in young women.

Nine patients with diagnosed breast cancer who developed meningiomas are reported. Articles suggesting that an association of these two tumors is possible. Some authors have noted hormonal sensitivity and the presence of hormonal receptors in some meningiomas. Since breast cancer is the most common tumor in women, an association between it and meningiomas might be fortuitous. However, it is important to fully investigate brain lesions in patients with breast cancer so that potentially curable meningiomas are not considered as metastases.

Aminoglutethimide inhibits steroid synthesis by the adrenal gland and the peripheral conversion of androgens to estrogens. As such it has been recommended in the place of adrenalectomy for the treatment of advanced breast cancer. A postmenopausal breast cancer patient with a measurable lung metastasis was treated with tamoxifen. The tumor doubling time of the pulmonary lesion was 140 days during spontaneous growth and 52 days during tamoxifen therapy, an almost threefold increase in tumor growth rate. Up to 20% of isolated cold thyroid nodules are malignant neoplasms. However, in the case of 1-4 cm large nodules entirely cystic as demonstrated by echotomography, surgery is not necessary as the frequency of malignancy is only 1%. In cases of hot nodules the risk of cancer is regarded as almost nil, but such nodules can lead to thyrotoxicosis. Treatment by surgery or 131l will depend on the patient's age and condition; it must be performed for all hyperthyroid patients and, as a preventive measure, for all elderly or cardiac patients to prevent the consequences of even slight hyperthyroidism.

Breast cyst fluid is a rich source of growth factors and sex hormones but the pathophysiology of cystic breast disease is largely unknown. In this study the net effects of breast cyst fluid on growth of, and oestrone sulphatase activity (oestrone sulphate --> oestrone) in the hormone-dependent MCF-7 and hormone-independent MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines were assessed. A novel human EBV-negative B-cell line, designated DOBIL-6, was established from a patient with non-secretary myeloma.
