Cutaneous myoepithelioma: an under-recognized cutaneous neoplasm composed of myoepithelial cells.

Benign and malignant neoplasms of myoepithelial cells comprise a rare but well-characterized group of tumors, among which myoepithelioma of the salivary glands is the best known. Extrasalivary examples of myoepithelioma also have been described in the breast, larynx, and retroperitoneum. Recently, myoepithelioma of the soft tissue also has been reported. According to this description, myoepithelioma and mixed tumors arising in the skin and subcutis represent points along a clinicopathologic spectrum of cutaneous and soft-tissue tumors. To the best of our knowledge, there has been only one case

Leiomyosarcoma of the Wing in a Vieilott's Fireback Pheasant (Lophura rufa).

A 15-year-old, female Vieilott's fireback pheasant (Lophura rufa) presented with a 2-day history of a drooping right wing. Examination revealed severe soft tissue swelling in the area extending from the right shoulder to the humeral-radio-ulnar joint with associated bruising and feather loss. Results of a complete blood cell count revealed marked heterophilia and lymphocytosis, and results of serum biochemical analysis showed severe increases in creatine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase activities, hypoproteinemia, and hypoalbuminemia. Radiographs revealed osteolytic lesions of the right

Endometrial stromal sarcoma of the vagina.

Endometrial stromal sarcoma is a rare tumor and has unique histopathologic features. Most tumors of this kind occur in the uterus; thus, the vagina is an extremely rare site. A 34-year-old woman presented with endometrial stromal sarcoma arising in the vagina. No correlative endometriosis was found. Because of the uncommon location, this tumor was differentiated from other more common neoplasms of the vagina, particularly embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma and other smooth muscle tumors. Although the pathogenesis of endometrial stromal tumors remains controversial, the most common theory of its origin

Uterine Tumor Resembling Ovarian Sex-Cord Tumor (UTROSCT): A Rare Polyphenotypic Neoplasm.

Uterine tumor resembling ovarian sex-cord tumor (UTROSCT) is a rare form of uterine mesenchymal neoplasm. Although UTROSCT generally exhibits benign behavior with a favorable prognosis, this neoplasm is nevertheless classified as being of uncertain malignant potential, given its low rate of recurrence and the fact that it rarely produces metastases (e.g., in the lymph nodes, epiploic appendix, omentum, small bowel, subcutaneous tissue, lungs). Its histogenesis is also uncertain. Typically, UTROSCT occurs in peri-menopausal or menopausal women, but it can sometimes be observed in young women. U

The expression of human chorionic gonadotropin/human luteinizing hormone receptors in human gestational trophoblastic neoplasms.

Normal human placental trophoblasts have recently been shown to contain receptors for hCG/hLH. The present studies investigated the expression of these receptors in hyperplastic and anaplastic trophoblasts in gestational trophoblastic neoplasms. The results demonstrated that both hydatidiform moles and choriocarcinomas contained receptor messenger RNA (mRNA) and receptor protein. A variety of nontrophoblast tumors, on the other hand, contained neither receptor mRNA nor receptor protein. Choriocarcinomas contained more receptor mRNA and receptor protein than hydatidiform moles which in turn con

Intranodal palisaded myofibroblastoma: a review of the literature.

Intranodal palisaded myofibroblastoma is a rare benign primary mesenchymal neoplasm originating from differentiated smooth muscle cells and myofibroblasts. The precise etiology and pathogenesis has not been adequately explained as yet. Very few series and cases have been reported in the literature. Though inguinal region is the commonest site of this rare tumor, but the tumor at other diverse sites have been reported. Because of its rarity, it can be often misdiagnosed and confused with other disorders and more commonly with metastasis. We report an extensive review of literature about intrano

Soft tissue aneurysmal bone cyst presenting as an enlarging neck mass: Case report and review of the head and neck literature.

Soft tissue aneurysmal bone cysts (STABCs) are rare neoplasms histopathologically identical to aneurysmal bone cysts. These benign lesions are characterized by thin, peripheral ossification and no skeletal continuity. STABC may be difficult to distinguish from myositis ossificans (MO) and malignant entities from imaging and fine needle aspiration, due to rarity and overlapping features. We present a case of a STABC occurring in the paraspinal cervical muscles. The imaging, histopathology, molecular analysis, and treatment are discussed. Four other published cases of STABC of the head and neck

Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of maxilla.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), a malignant neoplasm of skeletal muscle origin, is the most common soft tissue sarcoma seen in childhood and adolescence. The most frequent site is the head and neck accounting for 40% of all cases and other involved sites are genitourinary tract, retroperitoneum, and to a lesser extent, the extremities. RMS is relatively uncommon in the oral cavity and the involvement of the jaws is extremely rare. Here, we report a case of 50-year-old female with oral RMS involving maxillary alveolar region with clinical, radiological, histopathological and immunohistochemical finding

Central osteoma associated with root resorption.

Osteomas of the jaws are rare osteogenic lesions considered to be true neoplasms, characterized by the proliferation of compact and/or cancellous bone. It can be central, peripheral, or of an extraskeletal type. The central osteoma arises from the endosteum, the peripheral osteoma from the periosteum, and the extraskeletal soft tissue osteoma usually develops within a muscle. However, in a previous work we have suggested that at least some peripheral osteomas may be reactive rather than neoplasms, probably associated with trauma. Some reported cases did have a clear history of trauma; however,

Mesenchymal lesions of the vulva.

Mesenchymal lesions of the vulva include site-specific entities limited to the lower genital tract, as well as a range of non-site-specific tumors that are more common at extragenital sites. Site-specific lesions include fibroepithelial stromal polyp, cellular angiofibroma, angiomyofibroblastoma, and aggressive angiomyxoma. Non-site-specific tumors that may occur in the vulva include those of smooth muscle, skeletal muscle, vascular, neural, adipocytic, and uncertain differentiation. This review discusses both site-specific and non-site-specific vulvar mesenchymal lesions including non-neoplas

[Complications in the surgery of the parotid salivary glands. Causes, mechanisms of development, methods of prevention].

Operations for neoplasms of the parotid salivary gland require from the surgeon a deep knowledge of the anatomical and topographic features of this area and technical skill, which puts it in a number of «jewelry» operations that require patience and concentration. The review is devoted to the topic of specific postoperative complications after parotidectomy or subtotal resection of the gland. These include relapses of tumors, paralysis or paresis of facial muscles, Frey syndrome, salivary fistulas or sialocele, violation of skin sensitivity, soft tissue deformity. The review presents the frequ

Disseminated adenocarcinoma with ocular involvement in a cat.

Disseminated adenocarcinoma was associated with unilateral uveitis and multiple subcutaneous nodules in an 8-year-old domestic shorthair cat. Erythroleukemia and hind limb paresis developed over a 5-month period. At necropsy, numerous sites of metastases were found that had histologic features similar to the neoplasm in the left eye. Neoplastic cells were identified in the lungs, mediastinum, muscles, subcutaneous tissues, lymph nodes, and vasculature associated with the meninges of the brain and spinal cord. Morphologic associations were not found between erythroleukemia and the neoplastic pr

Tissue maturation correlating to clinical manifestations in juvenile angiofibroma.

OBJECTIVES: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare benign tumor that affects young male patients and shows a characteristic development from its origin. It is not a true neoplasm, but shows features of vascular processes, developing into a more fibrous condition. The aim of this study was to correlate the clinical manifestations and the histologic findings of the tumor. METHODS: Thirty-six patients without previous treatment were studied. We correlated the incidence and duration of the clinical manifestations (nasal obstruction, epistaxis, nasal and/or pharyngeal tumor, and facial def

Extrapleural solitary fibrous tumor: a report of seven cases.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare, spindle-cell neoplasms generally associated with the serosal surface, especially the pleura. Histopathologic, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, and flow cytometric analyses were performed on seven SFTs of extrapleural sites (two retroperitoneal, two soft tissue, one each peritoneal, nasal cavity, and orbit). Five patients were women, and two were men, aged from 21 to 68 years (average, 39 yr). All of the lesions presented as well-circumscribed masses. The lesions ranged in size from 2 to 20 cm in greatest diameter. Histologically, these lesions were

Chest-Wall Tumors and Surgical Techniques: State-of-the-Art and Our Institutional Experience.

The chest wall can be involved in both primary and secondary tumors, and even today, their management and treatment continue to be a challenge for surgeons. Primary chest-wall tumors are relatively rare and include a large group of neoplasms that can arise from not only bone or cartilage of the chest wall but also from associated subcutaneous tissue from muscle and blood vessels. Secondary tumors refer to a direct invasion of the chest wall by neoplasms located elsewhere in the body, mainly metastases from breast cancer and lung cancer. En-bloc surgical excision of the lesion should ensure ade

Mandibular Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumors: A Literature Review with a New Case Presentation.

Aim: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm with few reported mandibular cases. This review aims to describe the clinical characteristics, surgical management and outcomes of 13 mandibular IMT cases, and to introduce the Jaw in a Day (JIAD) approach as a novel surgical option. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science and Embase were searched systematically. From an initial pool of 261 articles, 13 studies met the inclusion criteria and were reviewed. Results: Thirteen mandibular IMT cases were identified in the literature. A new case is also presented: a 15-year-old fem

Aggressive angiomyxoma: reappraisal of its relationship to angiomyofibroblastoma in a series of 16 cases.

Aggressive angiomyxoma is a distinctive soft tissue tumor associated with a high risk of local recurrence but lacks metastatic potential. This tumour occurs nearly exclusively in the soft tissues of the pelvis and perineum of adult women. The line of differentiation is not firmly established, but a fibroblastic/myofibroblastic origin has been proposed. We report 16 new cases of aggressive angiomyxoma of the pelvic soft tissue in women. In all cases bundles of cells, most often adjacent to vessels, with histological features of smooth muscle cells were identified. In 11 of 14 cases the myoid bu

Hepatic angiomyolipoma.

Hepatic angiomyolipoma is a rare, benign, hepatic mesenchymal neoplasm found in both males and females, and most commonly in adult females. Angiomyolipoma occurs most commonly in the kidneys. The liver represents the second most frequent site of involvement. Hepatic angiomyolipomas are composed of varying amounts of smooth muscle cells, adipose tissue, and vessels. The smooth muscle cell component is the most specific to the diagnosis. The smooth muscle cells can have varying morphologies and are positive for homatropine methylbromide-45 but are negative for hepatocyte paraffin 1 and S100 prot
