The aim of this study was to compare the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in goats from two Argentinean provinces raised under different management conditions. A total of 2922 serum samples from adult goats of Córdoba (n=2187) and Buenos Aires provinces (n= 735), Argentina, were assayed by indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT, cut-off 1:100) for antibodies to T. gondii and N. caninum. Seroprevalence was 40.8% (CI 39.0%-42.6%) and 5.5% (CI 4.7%-6.4%) for T. gondii and N. caninum, respectively. The seropositivity for both infections was higher in goats from dairy far

Generally, rodents and other small mammals are considered as one of the sources of Toxoplasma gondii or Neospora caninum infection for cats and dogs as the definitive hosts of these two parasites, respectively. The aim of the study was to find out the prevalence of these two parasites in wild small mammals from the Czech Republic and to characterize T. gondii isolates by methods of molecular biology. A total of 621 wild small mammals were caught in the Czech Republic during years 2002-2014. Antibodies to T. gondii were detected by latex agglutination test in six (2.5%) of 240 small mammals (in

Toxoplasma and Neospora infections are important causes of abortions and economic losses in animal production. Mixed stock farming of sheep and goats is a common practice in Mediterranean countries and could serve as a suitable model for the evaluation of differences between the two animal species regarding parasitic infections. In order to investigate the seroprevalence of T. gondii and N. caninum among flocks of small ruminants in Greece and to evaluate any prevalence difference between sheep and goats kept in mixed flocks, 833 sera samples (458 sheep and 375 goats) from 50 mixed flocks in d

Humoral and cell-mediated immune (CMI) responses [i.e. proliferative responses and gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) production], were elicited in five cows infected between 159 and 169 days of gestation by a combined intravenous-intramuscular inoculation of Neospora caninum tachyzoites. Analysis of antigen-specific immunoglobulin (IgG) subclasses revealed a predominant IgG2 response in two cows, a mixed IgG1-IgG2 response in two other cows and a predominant IgG1 response in one cow. No correlation was found between IgG2 titers and IFN-gamma levels. CD4-T cells were responsible for the CMI response

Neospora caninum is an intracellular protozoan parasite with a global distribution, known to cause abortions in livestock. This study aimed to determine N. caninum seroprevalence in dairy goats with a history of reproductive failure in South Africa. Blood samples were collected from 131 dairy goats across five farms in three provinces and tested for N. caninum antibodies using the commercial indirect ELISA (IDvet Screen® Neospora caninum), followed with confirmatory testing with western blot (WB). The ELISA detected antibodies in one goat (1/131) [95 % CI: 0-2.8 %], while no positives were det

Neosporosis is a major cause of bovine abortion worldwide, leading to substantial economic losses. In western Türkiye, an area characterized by intensive cattle breeding, data on this disease remain limited, and no prior studies have investigated its risk factors. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, associated risk factors, and phylogenetic profile of Neospora caninum in the region. Visceral tissues from 88 aborted cattle fetuses were analyzed through genomic DNA isolation, real-time PCR (qPCR), and sequencing. In parallel, the presence of N. caninum antibodies was assessed in 973 se

Egress represents a crucial process employed by Neospora caninum in the establishment of infection. Dense granule proteins (GRAs), secreted by the dense granule, play significant roles in modifying the parasitophorous vacuole, maintenance of morphology, and regulating host-cell interactions. However, their precise involvement in tachyzoite egress remains inadequately characterized. In this study, we identified a homologous gene, Ncgra41, corresponding to the dense granule protein 41 (GRA41) of Toxoplasma gondii, which is associated with egress, utilizing NCBI and ToxoDB databases. NcGRA41 is l

We present a case of fatal disseminated neosporosis in a 3-month-old Cane Corso puppy. The puppy presented to the Purdue Veterinary Hospital emergency service with a 1-week history of progressive left hindlimb lameness. On presentation, the puppy was nonambulatory paraparetic. Signs progressed over two days to nonambulatory tetraparesis, and decreased to absent limb reflexes, cranial nerve deficits, and dull mentation. Blood work showed eosinophilia, elevated ALT, and extremely elevated creatine kinase at 36,000 IU/L (reference interval 22-491 IU/L). Two days after diagnostics were performed,

Neosporosis caused by the apicomplexan parasite Neospora caninum is an economically important disease that induces abortion in dairy and beef cattle. There are no vaccines or drugs available on the market for control or treatment of the disease in bovines. The peroxide artemisinin and its derivatives used clinically for treatment of malaria are active against N. caninum and other apicomplexan parasites. We have now evaluated the activities of the readily accessible and chemically robust 11-azaartemisinin 5 and selected N-sulfonyl derivatives prepared as described in the accompanying paper agai

INTRODUCTION: Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii are closely related obligate intracellular protozoan parasites. They are considered to be the major causes of infectious abortions and congenital abnormalities in livestock worldwide resulting in huge economic losses. Currently, there are no reports on the prevalence of neosporosis or toxoplasmosis in cattle in Beheira, Egypt's most important region for cattle industry.
METHODS: The current study investigated the presence of anti-N. caninum and anti-T. gondii antibodies in apparent healthy cattle from eight localities representing the whole

Neospora caninum and Cryptosporidium parvum are intracellular protozoan parasites that are distributed worldwide and of major economical concern in cattle industry. N. caninum can cause abortion storms and high culling rates, whereas C. parvum has zoonotic implications and can cause diarrhea in calves. There are currently no data on the prevalence of neosporosis and cryptosporidiosis in humans or animals in southern Egypt. Prevalence of these two infections was determined in a sample of cattle from two different areas in southern Egypt, Sohag and Qena, using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) and Neospora caninum (N. caninum) are both obligate intracellular protozoan parasites and share many common morphological and biological features. Despite these similarities the two parasites differ dramatically in virulence in mice, but the factors involved in virulence differences between the two parasites remain unknown. A secreted serine-threonine kinase called rhoptry protein 18 (ROP18) was identified to play a crucial role on virulence differences among different T. gondii clonal lineages. Intriguingly, we found that ROP18 in Nc1 strain of N. caninum (NcROP1
