Ion transport abnormalities in inflamed rat jejunum. Involvement of mast cells and nerves.

Basal and stimulated changes in ion transport in vitro were examined in jejunal mucosa from rats during inflammation produced after infection with the nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis. The gut was acutely inflamed at days 7 and 10 when net secretion of Na+ and Cl- ions was evident. Serum levels of rat mast cell protease II were elevated, providing evidence for mast cell activation. In addition, the magnitude of the short-circuit current responses to electrical transmural stimulation of enteric nerves (but not to histamine in the presence of neural blockade) were significantly reduced (p l

Neuroendocrine Neoplasms.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs), also known as neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), are rare tumors derived from cells with characteristics of both nerve and endocrine cells. The clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of NENs vary significantly depending on the type, location, whether the neoplasm is hormonally functional, how aggressive it is, and whether it has metastasized to other parts of the body. This article provides an overview of specific types of NETs, clinical presentations and related syndromes, diagnosis, and approach to management of common NENs.

Heterochronicity shapes brain network formation.

Brain network formation unfolds on a nonuniform developmental timetable, with different cortical regions generating connections at different developmental phases. Generative network models (GNMs) aim to uncover the principles underpinning the organization of connectomes by creating synthetic networks according to simple computational rules. These models capture the connectome's topology, operationalized here as the cumulative distributions of network metrics (e.g., modularity, small-worldness, rich-club structure). However, GNMs typically ignore the differential timing of connectivity formatio

Transparent Transfer-Free Ultrasmall Multilayer Graphene Microelectrodes Enable High Quality Recordings in Brain Slices.

Resolving the underlying mechanisms of complex brain functions and associated disorders remains a major challenge in neuroscience, largely due to the difficulty in mapping large-scale neural network dynamics with high spatiotemporal resolution. Multimodal neural platforms that integrate optical and electrical modalities offer a promising approach that surpasses resolution limits. Over the last decade, transparent graphene microelectrodes have been proposed as highly suitable multimodal neural interfaces. However, their fabrication commonly relies on the manual transfer process of pre-grown gra

Causal-Augmented Source-Free Domain Adaptation With Scale-Free Transformer for Schizophrenia Classification.

Brain functional networks (BFNs) derived from multi-site fMRI data have been widely explored using transformer-based models to extract discriminative connectivity features for the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia (SZ). However, existing transformer-based methods ignore physiological priors like the scale-free property, causing the attention to fail to capture the intrinsic topology of BFNs. Additionally, multi-site heterogeneity makes source-free domain adaptation (DA) essential in clinical practice where data sharing is restricted. However, existing methods mainly rel

Speech Motor Deficits in Developmental Stuttering and Parkinson's Disease: From Cellular and Circuit to Network-Level Disruptions.

Speech dysfluency occurs across multiple motor disorders to varying degrees, yet the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Like locomotion, speech production is relies on basal ganglia circuits, and disruptions in these pathways can lead to varied symptomatic presentations. In this perspective, we discuss evidence from cellular, circuit and network-level studies to highlight shared and disorder-specific mechanisms of speech dysfluency in Parkinson's disease and developmental stuttering. Basal ganglia function and dopaminergic modulation are central to both disorders, while cort

Neural Circuit Dysfunctions in Migraine: A Stage-Specific Dynamic Perspective.

Migraine is increasingly recognized as a cyclical brain state disorder rather than an isolated vascular or nociceptive condition. Its clinical phases may reflect dynamic reorganization of interacting neural circuits involved in sensory processing, homeostasis, pain modulation, and cognition. This review aims to synthesize current evidence and propose a stage-specific neural circuit dynamic model of migraine, linking each clinical phase to distinct patterns of circuit dysfunction and recovery. A narrative review of studies published between January 2010 and December 2024 was conducted using Pub

Neural circuit research using molecular barcode technology.

In neuroscience research, the primary goal is to understand the complex morphological and anatomical structures of the brain and their physiological and behavioral functional relationships or to understand the causality of diseases that manifest as dysfunction of the brain, and various technologies have been developed to achieve this goal. These include imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and positron emission tomography (PET), which noninvasively visualize brain structure and activity; electrophysiological techniques that

Designing Neural Dynamics: From Digital Twin Modeling to Regeneration.

Cognitive deterioration and the transition to neurodegenerative disease does not develop through simple, linear regression; it develops as rapid and global transitions from one state to another within the neural network. Developing understanding and control over these events is among the largest tasks facing contemporary neuroscience. This paper will discuss a conceptual reframing of cognitive decline as a transitional phase of the functional state of complex neural networks resulting from the intertwining of molecular degradation, vascular dysfunction and systemic disarray. The paper will int

The brain's action-mode network.

The brain is always intrinsically active, using energy at high rates while cycling through global functional modes. Awake brain modes are tied to corresponding behavioural states. During goal-directed behaviour, the brain enters an action-mode of function. In the action-mode, arousal is heightened, attention is focused externally and action plans are created, converted to goal-directed movements and continuously updated on the basis of relevant feedback, such as pain. Here, we synthesize classical and recent human and animal evidence that the action-mode of the brain is created and maintained

The multifunctionality of the brainstem breathing control circuit.

Subconscious breathing is generated by a network of brainstem nodes with varying purposes, like pacing breathing or patterning a certain breath phase. Decades of anatomy, pharmacology, and physiology studies have identified and characterized the system's fundamental properties that produce robust breathing, and we now have well-conceived computational models of breathing that are based on the detailed descriptions of neuronal connectivity, biophysical properties, and functions in breathing. In total, we have a considerable understanding of the brainstem breathing control circuit. But, in the l

Intrinsic neuronal network organization of a mammalian peripheral nervous system.

The vertebrate nervous system is traditionally parceled topographically into central and peripheral divisions. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) in turn is commonly viewed functionally as a set of nerves and ganglia transmitting input and output signals between the central nervous system (CNS) and other bodily systems to regulate physiology and behavior. Here, we collate and analyze neuroanatomical data on putative directed and weighted axonal connections between peripheral ganglia in a mammal (rat). The resulting network reveals a sparse but broad intra-PNS neuronal architecture with over 1

EEG-Based Brain Functional Network Analysis for Differential Identification of Dementia-Related Disorders and Their Onset.

Diagnosing and treating dementia, including mild cognitive impairment (MCI), is challenging due to diverse disease types and overlapping symptoms. Early MCI detection is vital as it can precede dementia, yet distinguishing it from later stage dementia is intricate due to subtle symptoms. The primary objective of this study is to adopt a complex network perspective to unravel the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of dementia-related disorders. Leveraging the extensive availability of electroencephalogram (EEG) data, our study focuses on the meticulous identification and analysis of EEG-b

Role of Neural Circuits in Cognitive Impairment.

Cognitive impairment refers to abnormalities in learning, memory and cognitive judgment, mainly manifested as symptoms such as decreased memory, impaired orientation and reduced computational ability. As the fundamental unit of information processing in the brain, neural circuits have recently attracted great attention due to their functions in regulating pain, emotion and behavior. Furthermore, a growing number of studies have suggested that neural circuits play an important role in cognitive impairment. Neural circuits can affect perception, attention and decision-making, they can also regul

Switching neuron contributions to second network activity.

Network flexibility is important for adaptable behaviors. This includes neuronal switching, where neurons alter their network participation, including changing from single- to dual-network activity. Understanding the implications of neuronal switching requires determining how a switching neuron interacts with each of its networks. Here, we tested 1) whether "home" and second networks, operating via divergent rhythm generation mechanisms, regulate a switching neuron and 2) if a switching neuron, recruited via modulation of intrinsic properties, contributes to rhythm or pattern generation in a n

A Novel Mouse Model for Polysynaptic Retrograde Tracing and Rabies Pathological Research.

Retrograde tracing is an important method for dissecting neuronal connections and mapping neural circuits. Over the past decades, several virus-based retrograde tracers have been developed and have contributed to display multiple neural circuits in the brain. However, most of the previously widely used viral tools have focused on mono-transsynaptic neural tracing within the central nervous system, with very limited options for achieving polysynaptic tracing between the central and peripheral nervous systems. In this study, we generated a novel mouse line, GT mice, in which both glycoprotein (G

Evaluating the rare cases of cortical vertigo using disconnectome mapping.

In rare cases, cortical infarcts lead to vertigo. We evaluated structural and functional disconnection in patients with acute vertigo due to unilateral ischemic cortical infarcts compared to infarcts without vertigo in a similar location with a focus on the connectivity of the vestibular cortex, i.e., the parieto-opercular (retro-)insular cortex (PIVC). Using lesion maps from the ten published case reports, we computed lesion-functional connectivity networks in a set of healthy individuals from the human connectome project. The probability of lesion disconnection was evaluated by white matter

Transcranial photobiomodulation changes topology, synchronizability, and complexity of resting state brain networks.

Objective. Transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) is a recently proposed non-invasive brain stimulation approach with various effects on the nervous system from the cells to the whole brain networks. Specially in the neural network level, tPBM can alter the topology and synchronizability of functional brain networks. However, the functional properties of the neural networks after tPBM are still poorly clarified.Approach. Here, we employed electroencephalography and different methods (conventional and spectral) in the graph theory analysis to track the significant effects of tPBM on the resting

Resting state functional connectivity responses post-mild traumatic brain injury: a systematic review.

Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) are associated with functional network connectivity alterations throughout recovery. Yet, little is known about the adaptive or maladaptive nature of post-mTBI connectivity and which networks are predisposed to altered function and adaptation. The objective of this review was to determine functional connectivity changes post-mTBI and to determine the adaptive or maladaptive nature of connectivity through direct comparisons of connectivity and behavioral data. Literature was systematically searched and appraised for methodological quality. A total of 16 arti
