Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) are a heterogeneous group of aggressive neoplasms. The involvement of ocular structures in haematological neoplasms is rare and usually associated with central nervous system involvement, which may occur as a result of orbital invasion and optic nerve infiltration. In this case report, we describe ocular findings using the novel swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) in a case of aggressive T-cell lymphoma. SS-OCT has faster scanning speed, deeper tissue penetration due to its longer wavelength laser of 1050 nm and wider scanning areas. In the pr

Overactive bladder (OAB) is a common condition with increasing prevalence. However, its aetiology is not fully understood. The main symptoms are sudden urge to urinate, with or without incontinence; increased daytime frequency; and nocturia. OAB-like symptoms can be caused by a number of diseases, including urinary tract infections, neurologic and metabolic diseases, and neoplasms. The final diagnosis is made after excluding all the abovementioned factors. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction has also been identified as a possible cause of so-called 'idiopathic OAB'. In order to check th

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of multiple sclerosis and intracranial neoplasms is very rare, and whether this occurrence can be explained by a causal relationship or by coincidence remains a matter of debate. Possible roles of the choroid plexus as a site of tumor cell invasion and lymphocyte infiltration into the central nervous system have been hypothesized in recent studies.
METHODS: We describe a 13-year-old boy with concurrent multiple sclerosis and choroid plexus papilloma, then review the published literature with a focus on the pathophysiologic mechanisms of neuroinflammation in multipl

Juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma, the most common pediatric central nervous system (CNS) neoplasm, characteristically displays an indolent growth pattern and rarely demonstrates metastatic dissemination. Reports of infections mimicking CNS metastatic disease are also rare and can impact treatment. We report the youngest known case of a child with a CNS Nocardia farcinica infection who had a known cerebellar pilocytic astrocytoma, review other infections that may masquerade as CNS neoplasms, and discuss N. farcinica CNS infections.

MYC/BCL2 double hit lymphoma (DHL) is a rare, recently recognised and highly aggressive subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, with an affinity to involve the central nervous system and the head and neck either at initial presentation or during relapse. We present a case of 43-year-old woman with MYC/BCL2 DHL relapse in the nasopharynx with extensive spread to the neck, skull base, and the central nervous system. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case in the literature describing the MRI and CT scan findings and the profound pattern of disease involvement of this rare neoplasm.

Data on the spectrum of second malignant neoplasms (SMNs) after primary childhood non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) are scarce. One-hundred-and-eighty-nine NHL patients diagnosed in a 30 years period of 1980-2010 developing an SMN were retrieved from 19 members of the European Intergroup for Childhood NHL and/or the international Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster Study Group. Five subgroups of SMNs were identified: (1) myeloid neoplasms (n = 43; 23%), (2) lymphoid neoplasms (n = 51; 27%), (3) carcinomas (n = 48; 25%), (4) central nervous system (CNS) tumors (n = 19; 10%), and (5) "other" SMNs (n = 28; 15%).

BACKGROUND: Tooth agenesis, the congenital absence of one or more teeth, can be diagnosed in children in the first decade of life. Tooth agenesis is a phenotypic feature of conditions such as ectodermal dysplasia, cleft lip, cleft palate, Down syndrome, and Van der Woude syndrome. Tooth agenesis can also be nonsyndromic. Studies have shown an association between the genetic determinants of nonsyndromic tooth agenesis and neoplasms in adulthood.
METHODS: This review of the implications of tooth agenesis as a risk indicator for neoplasms in adulthood is based on a search of PubMed to identify p

Multiple myeloma is an immunoglobulin-producing plasma cell neoplasm that commonly affects the bones, kidneys, the hematopoietic system, and rarely the nervous system. Peripheral nervous system involvement in the form of cranial neuropathy, radiculopathy, and polyneuropathy are common. Compressive myelopathy constitutes the majority of central nervous system disorders followed by cerebrovascular disorders, intracranial plasmacytomas, and leptomeningeal myelomatosis. Cerebrovascular complications such as acute ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack are not uncommon. Intracerebral hemorrh

INTRODUCTION: Central nervous system tumors are the second most frequent group of neoplasms in children and are the main cause of cancer-related deaths in the pediatric population. There are no specific clinical findings. Consequently clinical data that would aid diagnosis are required.
OBJECTIVE: To establish the presenting signs and symptoms of brain tumors in childhood according to age and identify their influence on diagnostic delay.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied 69 patients with central nervous system tumors diagnosed between January 1997 and December 2002 in the Virg

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare hematologic malignancy, especially in pediatrics, that can involve the bone marrow, skin, lymph nodes, and central nervous system (CNS). Given its variable clinical presentation, coupled with an immunohistochemistry pattern (CD4, CD56, TCF4, TCL-1, and CD123 positivity) that differs from other myeloid neoplasms, the diagnosis of BPDCN can be missed. Limited data are available to guide the treatment of pediatric BPDCN. Herein, we report a case of a pediatric patient who had BPDCN with central nervous system, orbital, and skin involv

Neurogenic tumors represent a broad ill-defined category of neoplasms that includes tumors of Schwann cell and/or neuroblastic derivation, as well as neoplasms that typically develop in the central nervous system, but rarely present in ectopic sites including the mediastinum. Neurogenic tumors may occur at many different anatomic sites, but the mediastinum represents a uniquely challenging site given the complex anatomy. Additionally, some of these neoplasms may present with multicentric involvement in the context of genetic syndromes, including NF1, NF2 and schwanomatosis. Most of these devel

Glioblastoma multiforme is a rapidly growing anaplastic primary tumor of the central nervous system. It is frequently associated with neurofibromatosis or other hamartomatous syndromes, and in such kindreds may be found in several generations. We describe a highly inbred family in which glioblastoma multiforme presents in males only as an isolated central nervous system neoplasm on the right side, without evidence of other underlying genetic disease. It is speculated that in this family the tumor develops as the consequence of an autosomal recessive or an X-linked recessive mutation. In additi

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare hematopoietic malignancy originating from the monocyte/macrophage bone marrow lineage. HS can occur in isolation or in association with other hematological neoplasms such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), myelodysplasia, or acute leukemia. Clinically, HS can affect lymph nodes, gastrointestinal tract, skin, bone marrow, and spleen as well as the central nervous system. Most cases of HS follow an aggressive clinical course, with most patients dying of progressive disease within one year of diagnosis.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a systemic disease primarily characterized by the inflammation of sacroiliac joints and axial skeleton. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a multisystem genetic disease which is characterized by cutaneous findings, most importantly café-au-lait spots and axillary freckling, by skeletal dysplasia, and by the growth of both benign and malignant nervous system neoplasms, most notably benign neurofibromas. In this case report, we present a 43-year-old male with AS and NF1.

Meningiomas and schwannomas are relatively common central nervous system neoplasms, but patients harbouring multiple meningiomas or schwannomas are rare. We present the case of a 27 year-old patient with Neurofibromatosis type 2 with multiple associated intracranial meningiomas and spinal cord neurofibromas at various levels. Patients with Neurofibromatosis type 2 should be followed up for life with serial magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and spinal cord to detect new and recurrent tumours at these sites.

Central nervous system (CNS) involvement with malignant cells is a well recognized complication of hematologic neoplasms. A number of disorders such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia and high grade lymphoma frequently involve the CNS and prophylactic therapy is advised. Disorders such as acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and multiple myeloma are less likely to be associated with CNS involvement. This series describes three cases of CNS involvement by malignant hematologic disease: myelomatous meningitis, CNS chloromas complicating AML, and primary lymphomatous meningitis.

The recent description of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) followed the observation of an increased incidence of unusual neoplasms and opportunistic infections in previously healthy homosexual men, intravenous drug abusers, Haitians, hemophiliacs, and certain infants. Active research efforts on this group of patients established a defect in cellular immunity. Six patients with AIDS who underwent neurosurgical procedures for intracranial space-occupying lesions are presented. Two of the patients had toxoplasmosis brain abscesses, one had primary central nervous system lymphoma, on

Neoplasms are only sporadically reported in New World primates and rarely in owl monkeys (Aotus spp.), specifically. Previous reports of neoplasms in owl monkeys are primarily restricted to lymphoma induced by Herpesvirus saimiri infection, although other tumors in the central nervous, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems have been sporadically reported. Herein, we describe 3 previously unreported neoplasms in owl monkeys (Aotus nancymaae) including a pericardial mesothelioma in a 6-year-old male, a nephroblastoma in a 2-year-old male, and a cervical neoplasm with characteris
