Malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumor: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: A malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumor (GNET) is an extremely rare primary malignant mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by EWSR1 gene rearrangement. An optimal systemic treatment strategy for advanced/recurrent GNET has not yet been identified. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old male patient was hospitalized with abdominal pain and underwent two operations for a tumor in his small intestine. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) showed strong expression of S-100 protein and SOX 10. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis and next-gene

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI), first described almost a century back, is of neural crest origin, locally aggressive, a rare biphasic neoplasm of infancy with a slightly higher male preponderance. In the last 100 years since the first description of MNTI, only around 500 cases have been described from 32 countries. We present a 7-month-old female child with 3 × 2 cm hard swelling in the oral cavity and right-side facial region for 3 months. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging scan revealed a hypodense lesion of size 2.5

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the pericardium: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: The primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are a family of highly malignant tumors with a multidirectional differential potential. The tumors are characterized by aggressive small round tumor cells that originate from the spinal cord of the central and sympathetic nervous systems. Cases involving the pericardium are extremely rare. Herein, we present a case of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (pPNET) that originated in the pericardium. CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old woman presented with cough and progressive dyspnea for 1 month, followed by eyelid and facial edema fo

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy: Case Report and Review of Management.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare pigmented tumor of the head and neck, which most commonly presents during the first year of life. Most cases present in the bones of the craniofacial region, including the maxilla (60.3%), skull (18.1%), and mandible (10.3%). The alveolar crest of the anterior maxilla is the most common site. MNTIs are locally aggressive, but benign, lesions derived from neural crest cells. However, they have a high rate of recurrence, and ≤6.5% of cases will demonstrate metastasis to lymph nodes or distant organs. They present clinically as an expans

Primary leptomeningeal primitive neuroectodermal tumor: A difficult entity to diagnose.

A 25-year-old male presented with difficulty in walking, loss of vision, and seizures. A clinical possibility of craniospinal meningeal pathology was considered. On computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging, there was an enhancement of leptomeninges with few ring-enhancing lesions in both frontal lobes and right frontoparietal region. He was evaluated for low backache and occipital headache 2½ years earlier and was found to have communicating hydrocephalus on CT scan. He underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt and was followed up with CT scans. Meningeal biopsy was done in the

Treatment Options for Medulloblastoma and CNS Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor (PNET).

Medulloblastoma and central nervous system (CNS) primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) are primary pediatric brain tumors that require multidisciplinary therapies. Although often treated similarly in clinical trials, they are biologically different diseases. Even within medulloblastomas and CNS PNETs, there are molecularly distinct subgroups with differing presentations and prognoses. Overall, prognosis is better for medulloblastomas. Specific treatments for these types of cancer are continuously evolving to maximize survival and minimize long-term sequelae of treatment. Patients should be tr

Cytologic and immunohistochemical characterization of a primitive neuroectodermal tumor in the brain of a dog.

A 6-year-old intact female Pointer dog was presented for evaluation of acute onset of ataxia, circling, and head tilt. Neurologic assessment revealed overall decreased postural reaction, left-sided hemiparesis with incoordination, rigidity of fore- and hindlimbs, strabismus of the right eye, and bilateral horizontal nystagmus. Using magnetic resonance imaging, a mass lesion was identified in the cerebrum adjacent to the left side of the cerebellum compressing the brain stem ventrally. The mass was incompletely resected, and during surgery fine-needle aspiration and biopsy of the mass were perf

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the vulva: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Ewing's sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES-PNET) is a high-grade malignant neoplasm that often develops in the skeletal system. Primary extraskeletal ES-PNET is an uncommon condition that rarely affects the female genital tract. Tumors in the ovary, cervix, and uterine corpus and vulva are occasionally reported. Reports on the Ewing family of tumors involving the vulva are extremely rare in the relevant literature. Only a few cases of vulvar ES-PNET have so far been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old adolescent girl presented to the clinic with a 4-mo

Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor during pregnancy. Case report.

The case of an 18-year-old primipara in the second trimester of pregnancy affected by a primitive supratentorial mass is described. Main symptoms of increased intracranial pressure were severe headache, diplopia, and left hemiparesis. In the 20(th) week of pregnancy a fronto-temporal craniotomy was performed with complete excision of the tumor. Immunohistochemical analysis showed a primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET). Three months after being discharged, the patient still presented headache and apathy, and a magnetic resonance imaging scan again showed the presence of a temporal lesion; the

Radiologic findings of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor arising in the retroperitoneum.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to present the radiological findings of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors that arise in the retroperitoneum. CONCLUSION: Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) arising in the retroperitoneum tend to be large and aggressive. Although the imaging appearance of peripheral PNETs is nonspecific, these tumors should be considered in the differential diagnosis when one encounters a large retroperitoneal mass with aggressive features.

Epigenetic inactivation of DLC-1 in supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor.

Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (SPNETs) and medulloblastomas (MBs) are histologically similar intracranial tumors found in different anatomic locations of the brain. Our group has previously demonstrated that loss of chromosome 8p is a frequent event in MBs. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether DLC-1, a newly identified tumor-suppressor gene on chromosome 8p22, is involved in the tumorigenesis of MBs and the histologically similar SPNETs. We first assessed for alterations of gene expression in microdissected tumors and detected lack of DLC-1 transcript in 1 of 9 MBs (

Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor in an aged patient--case report--.

An 88-year-old woman presented with a supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) manifesting as disturbance of consciousness and left hemiplegia. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a large mass lesion in the right frontotemporal region. She underwent biopsy of the lesion that confirmed the diagnosis of PNET. Her poor condition only allowed chemotherapy with methyl 6-[3-(2-chloroethyl)-3-nitrosoureido]-6-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyranoside (MCNU), vincristine, and prednisolone to be performed. The patient died approximately 6 months after diagnosis due to enlargement of the tumor. Supratent

Testicular Mixed Germ Cell Tumor with Concurrent Embryonic-Type Neuroectodermal Tumor and Nephroblastoma.

Both embryonic-type neuroectodermal tumor and nephroblastoma arising as somatic-type malignancies are rare, particularly nephroblastoma. Concurrent embryonic-type neuroectodermal tumor and nephroblastoma have only been reported once in literature, identified in metastatic pelvic lymph nodes in association with a mixed germ cell tumor. Herein, we report the first concurrent embryonic-type neuroectodermal tumor and nephroblastoma within the primary testicular tumor, arising associated with a mixed germ cell tumor. Pineal Parenchymal Tumors With Intermediate Differentiation to Pineoblastoma: A Transitional Neuroectodermal Tumor of the Pineal Gland.

Pineal tumors are quite rare and are fairly aggressive tumors seen in young adults and children. These tumors arise from the pineal region or recess from various types of cells in the gland and structures located in close propinquity to the gland. Pineal gland tumors have a heterogeneous spectrum that includes pineal parenchymal tumors (PPTs) and papillary tumors of the pineal region (PTPR). The PPTs are further subclassified into pineocytomas (Grade 1), PPTs of intermediate differentiation (grade 2 or 3), and pineoblastomas (grade 4) based on the World Health Organization (WHO) grades and his
