A Study on the Effect of Mental Practice Using Motor Evoked Potential-Based Neurofeedback.

This study aimed to investigate whether the effect of mental practice (motor imagery training) can be enhanced by providing neurofeedback based on transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)-induced motor evoked potentials (MEP). Twenty-four healthy, right-handed subjects were enrolled in this study. The subjects were randomly allocated into two groups: a group that was given correct TMS feedback (Real-FB group) and a group that was given randomized false TMS feedback (Sham-FB group). The subjects imagined pushing the switch with just timing, when the target circle overlapped a cross at the center

Neurofeedback in ADHD: A qualitative study of strategy use in slow cortical potential training.

METHOD: We collected 130 short semi-structured interviews following treatment sessions from 30 participants with ADHD receiving NF using slow cortical potential training (SCP). The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis. Themes where evaluated for changes over-time and between participants with high/low treatment compliance. Interviews from 14 participants who had undergone at least five completed interviews were examined in more depths, aiming to establish typical strategy/training profiles. RESULTS: We identified 16 strategies covering four domains: cognit

Investigation of the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation and neurofeedback by continuous performance test.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique based on weak direct current stimulation through the scalp. Neurofeedback (NFB) is a learning strategy that may help alter to brain wave parameters, by monitoring electroencephalography (EEG) feedback via special programs. We aimed to investigate the supportive effects of tDCS in addition to NFB training. 16 healthy volunteers were divided equally into two groups. One of the groups was trained by NFB with the sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) protocol; 2 days per week, 10 sessions of 30 min, the other group recei

Investigating the Efficacy of an Individualized Alpha/Delta Neurofeedback Protocol in the Treatment of Chronic Tinnitus.

First attempts have demonstrated that the application of alpha/delta neurofeedback in the treatment of chronic tinnitus leads to a reduction of symptoms at the group level. However, recent research also suggests that chronic tinnitus is a decidedly heterogeneous phenomenon, one that requires treatment of distinct subgroups or even on an individual level. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate an individually adjusted alpha/delta neurofeedback protocol. Following previous studies, the delta band fixed between 3 and 4 Hz was chosen as the frequency for inhibition. However, unlike the pr

Neurofeedback and neuroplasticity of visual self-processing in depressed and healthy adolescents: A preliminary study.

UNLABELLED: Adolescence is a neuroplastic period for self-processing and emotion regulation transformations, that if derailed, are linked to persistent depression. Neural mechanisms of adolescent self-processing and emotion regulation ought to be targeted via new treatments, given moderate effectiveness of current interventions. Thus, we implemented a novel neurofeedback protocol in adolescents to test the engagement of circuits sub-serving self-processing and emotion regulation. METHODS: Depressed (n = 34) and healthy (n = 19) adolescents underwent neurofeedback training using a novel task.

Self-regulation of the dopaminergic reward circuit in cocaine users with mental imagery and neurofeedback.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced drug-related reward sensitivity accompanied by impaired sensitivity to non-drug related rewards in the mesolimbic dopamine system are thought to underlie the broad motivational deficits and dysfunctional decision-making frequently observed in cocaine use disorder (CUD). Effective approaches to modify this imbalance and reinstate non-drug reward responsiveness are urgently needed. Here, we examined whether cocaine users (CU) can use mental imagery of non-drug rewards to self-regulate the ventral tegmental area and substantia nigra (VTA/SN). We expected that obsessive and co

The mechanism of neurofeedback training for treatment of central neuropathic pain in paraplegia: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Central neuropathic pain has a prevalence of 40% in patients with spinal cord injury. Electroencephalography (EEG) studies showed that this type of pain has identifiable signatures, that could potentially be targeted by a neuromodulation therapy. The aim of the study was to investigate the putative mechanism of neurofeedback training on central neuropathic pain and its underlying brain signatures in patients with chronic paraplegia. METHODS: Patients' EEG activity was modulated from the sensory-motor cortex, electrode location C3/Cz/C4/P4 in up to 40 training sessions Results. Six

The application and efficacy of combined neurofeedback therapy and imagery training in adolescents with Tourette syndrome.

We aimed to examine the effectiveness of combined neurofeedback therapy and imagery training in adolescent patients with refractory Tourette syndrome. Two patients, aged respectively 14 and 16 years, had been treated with haloperidol and tiapride; however, this medication was ineffective and accompanied by intolerable side effects. In this study, the patients completed 80 sessions of neurofeedback treatment followed by imagery training. The patients were assessed with behavior rating scales both before and after the treatment as well as during follow-up examinations to evaluate the effect of t

The effectiveness of neurofeedback training on EEG coherence and neuropsychological functions in children with reading disability.

Neurofeedback training (NFT) is an effective intervention in regulating electroencephalogram (EEG) abnormalities leading to improvements in behavioral deficits, which exist in children with reading disabilities. This single-subject study explores our evaluation of the improvements in the reading ability and phonological awareness deficit, as well as the changes in the EEG in children with reading disabilities as a result of NFT. Participants were 6 children, aged between 8 and 10 years, who completed twenty 30-minute sessions of NFT and follow-up measurement sessions 2 months subsequent to the

Neurofeedback for tinnitus: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial assessing the specificity of an alpha/delta neurofeedback training protocol in alleviating both sound perception and psychological distress in a cohort of chronic tinnitus sufferers.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a particularly common condition and can have debilitating psychological consequences for certain people. Although several interventions have been helpful in teaching individuals to better cope with tinnitus, no cure exists at present. Neurofeedback is an emerging treatment modality in tinnitus. Previous studies, utilising an alpha/delta training protocol, have shown promise. However, they were characterised by small sample sizes and a lack of neurofeedback control conditions. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate whether an alpha/delta neurofeedback trainin

Physiological artefact control in real-time fMRI neurofeedback - A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Physiological artefacts are a general challenge in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and are of particular relevance in real-time fMRI neurofeedback (rt-fMRI NF), where they can contaminate the training procedure and lead to undesired effects. However, physiological noise correction has not received corresponding attention in rt-fMRI NF and most attempts have mainly focused on offline data correction. Given the relatively rare use of physiological denoising methods in rt-fMRI NF and little knowledge about how these methods relate to reported outcomes, in this paper we review recent

Enhancing fMRI Decoded Neurofeedback with Co-adaptive Training: Simulation and Proof-of-principle Evidence.

A significant challenge for neurofeedback training research and related clinical applications, is participants' difficulty in learning to induce specific brain patterns during training. Here, we address this issue in the context of fMRI-based decoded neurofeedback (DecNef). Arguably, discrepancies between the data used to construct the decoder and the data used for neurofeedback training, such as differences in data distributions and experimental contexts, neural and non-neural noise, are likely the cause of the difficulties of the aforementioned participants. Here, we developed a co-adaptatio

Neurofeedback of somatosensory alpha oscillations modulates sensory and affective pain through dissociable neurocognitive pathways.

Elevated somatosensory α-oscillations are associated with reduced pain sensitivity, motivating efforts to modulate these rhythms for analgesia. Neurofeedback enables voluntary regulation of neural activity through real-time feedback. Here, we examined whether neurofeedback targeting somatosensory α-oscillations modulates pain and explored the associated neurocognitive processes. In a double-blind, sham-controlled design, healthy participants ( n = 80) underwent neurofeedback training during capsaicin-induced tonic pain. Real neurofeedback provided feedback contingent on contralateral somatosen

Gamma and Beta Neurofeedback Training Can Improve Visual Perception With Spectral and Regional Specificity.

BACKGROUND: Gamma and beta oscillations of electroencephalography (EEG) are involved in multiple perceptual information processing. Neurofeedback training (NFB) is a non-invasive neuromodulation approach that provides an endogenous paradigm to investigate the causal relationship between brain oscillations and cognitive abilities. In this study we investigated the effectiveness and specificity of gamma and combined gamma-beta NFB training for improving visual perception in healthy adults. METHODS: A total of 48 healthy participants were recruited and randomly assigned into three groups. Four p

Self-Processing Circuits Among Depressed Youth After Amygdala Neurofeedback Cued to the Self-Face.

Major depressive disorder is a significant health concern among adolescents due to its link to suicide and lifetime impairments. Current treatments yield limited success, but real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (RT-fMRI) neurofeedback (NF) is a promising intervention. We tested the effects of RT-fMRI neurofeedback on the modulation of neural circuitry underlying self-referential processing and emotion regulation in youth trying to up-regulate the amygdala-hippocampus (AMYHIPP) complex. We examined amygdala functional connectivity during a self-other face recognition task before and

ILF-neurofeedback in clinical practice: examining symptom change and performance metrics across diagnostic groups.

INTRODUCTION: Neurofeedback (NF), particularly Infra-Low Frequency (ILF) Neurofeedback, is an emerging method of neuromodulation aimed at enhancing the brain's self-regulation. It is a potentially powerful tool to complement the clinician's toolbox, supporting the treatment of symptoms stemming from arousal regulation deficiencies. Despite the broad use and applicability of the arousal regulation model, there is a gap between its practical use and academic research. This study examines the effectiveness of ILF Neurofeedback across different diagnostic groups and explores whether subjective sym

Rehabilitation of Chronic Stroke Using Neurofeedback, Functional Electrical Stimulation and Cerebrospinal Direct Current Stimulation.

This work presents the application of a rehabilitation protocol using a novel Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation (NIBS) technique, called cerebrospinal Direct Current Stimulation (csDCS), together with the use of a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) based on Motor Imagery (MI) with Neurofeedback (NFB), and applying Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) plus the use of a pedal exerciser. This protocol uses the concept of Alternating Treatment Design (ATD), in which a chronic post-stroke subject is submitted to these techniques to recover his left hand and leg movements. The rehabilitation progress wa

Utilizing Phase Locking Value to Determine Neurofeedback Treatment Responsiveness in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Neurofeedback is a non-invasive brain training technique used to enhance and treat hyperactivity disorder by altering the patterns of brain activity. Nonetheless, the extent of enhancement by neurofeedback varies among individuals/patients and many of them are irresponsive to this treatment technique. Therefore, several studies have been conducted to predict the effectiveness of neurofeedback training including the theta/beta protocol with a specific emphasize on slow cortical potential (SCP) before initiating treatment, as well as examining SCP criteria according to age and sex cr
