Mechanisms underlying the generation of autonomorespiratory coupling amongst the respiratory central pattern generator, sympathetic oscillators, and cardiovagal premotoneurons.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The respiratory rhythm and pattern and sympathetic and parasympathetic outflows are generated by distinct, though overlapping, propriobulbar arrays of neuronal microcircuit oscillators constituting networks utilizing mutual excitatory and inhibitory neuronal interactions, residing principally within the metencephalon and myelencephalon, and modulated by synaptic influences from the cerebrum, thalamus, hypothalamus, cerebellum, and mesencephalon and ascending influences deriving from peripheral stimuli relayed by cranial nerve afferent axons. Though the respiratory and cardiovascular regulatory

Distinct supraspinal neural pathways underlie licking-induced alleviation of pain sensation and aversion in male mice.

Licking as a form of tactile input is widely employed to assess pain levels, suggesting that it may be a restorative behavior in response to injury. However, the exact brain neural mechanisms underlying licking-induced analgesia remain to be elucidated. In this study, we establish a mouse research paradigm to investigate licking-induced analgesia and report that licking behavior significantly reduces pain sensation and pain-related aversion in male mice by triggering the activation of glutamatergic neurons within the gracile nucleus (Gr). Furthermore, we describe the efferent projections from

Neuroanatomical and neurophysiological evidence of pulmonary nociceptor and carotid chemoreceptor convergence in the nucleus tractus solitarius and nucleus ambiguus.

Pulmonary vagal nociceptors defend the airways. Cardiopulmonary vagal nociceptors synapse in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS). Evidence has demonstrated the convergence of cardiopulmonary nociceptors with afferents from carotid chemoreceptors. Whether sensory convergence occurs in motor nuclei and how sensory convergence affects reflexive efferent motor output directed toward the airways are critical knowledge gaps. Here, we show that distinct tracer injection into the pulmonary nociceptors and carotid chemoreceptors leads to co-labeled neurons in the nucleus tractus solitarius and nucleus

Morphological changes of cholinergic nerve fibers in the urinary bladder after establishment of artificial somatic-autonomic reflex arc in rats.

OBJECTIVE: To establish an artificial somatic-autonomic reflex arc in rats and observe the following distributive changes of neural fibers in the bladder. METHODS: Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups: control group, spinal cord injury (SCI) group, and reinnervation group. DiI retrograde tracing was used to verify establishment of the model and to investigate the transport function of the regenerated efferent axons in the new reflex arc. Choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) in the DiI-labeled neurons was detected by immunohistochemistry. Distribution of neural fibers

Re-Emergent Inhibition of Cochlear Inner Hair Cells in a Mouse Model of Hearing Loss.

UNLABELLED: Hearing loss among the elderly correlates with diminished social, mental, and physical health. Age-related cochlear cell death does occur, but growing anatomical evidence suggests that synaptic rearrangements on sensory hair cells also contribute to auditory functional decline. Here we present voltage-clamp recordings from inner hair cells of the C57BL/6J mouse model of age-related hearing loss, which reveal that cholinergic synaptic inputs re-emerge during aging. These efferents are functionally inhibitory, using the same ionic mechanisms as do efferent contacts present transientl

Ultrastructure of the gallbladder paraganglia.

The ultrastructure of the paraganglia in the gallbladder is identical to that of other nonchromaffin paraganglia featuring granule-bearing chief cells with many axons ensheathed by supporting cells. Synapses between axons, chief cells, and axons and chief cells are common. Ultrastructural similarities to the carotid body, proven to be a chemoreceptor, support a similar function for these paraganglia. An endocrine function is also suggested by the partial similarity of their structure to that of Zuckerkandl's organ.

Progressive Bulbar Palsy (PBP) or Bulbar Onset MND: "A Case Report".

A patient with enhancing bulbar palsy, a type of efferent neuron disease that causes hypertrophy and twitching of the tongue's musculature, dysphagia, dysarthria, and an excessive buildup of secretions, is described. Enhancing bulbar palsy is a degenerative disorder of the efferent nuclei in the medulla. The patient may consult a dentist at first. Clinicians must possess knowledge regarding the telltale signs and symptoms of this terminal illness to promptly refer patients for neurologic evaluation and initiate appropriate symptomatic treatments.

Neuronal cell adhesion molecule (NrCAM) is expressed by sensory cells in the cochlea and is necessary for proper cochlear innervation and sensory domain patterning during development.

BACKGROUND: In the cochlea, auditory development depends on precise patterns of innervation by afferent and efferent nerve fibers, as well as a stereotyped arrangement of hair and supporting cells. Neuronal cell adhesion molecule (NrCAM) is a homophilic cell adhesion molecule that controls diverse aspects of nervous system development, but the function of NrCAM in cochlear development is not well understood. RESULTS: Throughout cochlear innervation, NrCAM is detectable on spiral ganglion neuron (SGN) afferent and olivocochlear efferent fibers, and on the membranes of developing hair and suppo

Serially homologous development of the peripheral nervous system in the mouthparts of the grasshopper.

Segmentally homologous neurogenesis and neuronal differentiation processes characterize the formation of the peripheral nervous system in the developing mouthparts of the grasshopper embryo. The peripherally located neurons derive from the ectoderm in each of the embryonic mouthparts. The major nerve branches serving the mandibles, maxillae, and labium are established by peripheral pioneer neurons, which project their axons into the central nervous system via a set of guidepost cells. The two secondary nerve branches in each appendage are established by fasciculation of peripheral afferent pio

Talking back: Development of the olivocochlear efferent system.

Developing sensory systems must coordinate the growth of neural circuitry spanning from receptors in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) to multilayered networks within the central nervous system (CNS). This breadth presents particular challenges, as nascent processes must navigate across the CNS-PNS boundary and coalesce into a tightly intermingled wiring pattern, thereby enabling reliable integration from the PNS to the CNS and back. In the auditory system, feedforward spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) from the periphery collect sound information via tonotopically organized connections in the c

Protection from noise-induced hearing loss by Kv2.2 potassium currents in the central medial olivocochlear system.

The central auditory brainstem provides an efferent projection known as the medial olivocochlear (MOC) system, which regulates the cochlear amplifier and mediates protection on exposure to loud sound. It arises from neurons of the ventral nucleus of the trapezoid body (VNTB), so control of neuronal excitability in this pathway has profound effects on hearing. The VNTB and the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body are the only sites of expression for the Kv2.2 voltage-gated potassium channel in the auditory brainstem, consistent with a specialized function of these channels. In the absence of un

Peripheral neural circuits regulating IOP? A review of its anatomical backbone.

The peripheral nervous system is classically separated into a somatic division containing both afferent and efferent pathways and an autonomic division composed of efferents only. The somatic afferent division is divided in A- and B-neurons. The B-neurons are supposed to be autonomic afferents as part of a reflex system involved in homeostasis. Recent data obtained by neuronal tracing and immunohistochemical experiments concerning the eye related peripheral nervous system endorse the existence of these peripheral reflex systems. Somatic afferents of trigeminal origin synaptically innervate par

Neurotransmission of the cochlear inner hair cell synapse--implications for inner ear therapy.

The cochlear inner hair cells (IHCs) are connected to afferent type I auditory neurons and use probably L-glutamate as a neurotransmitter. This IHC synapse receives efferent input from the lateral part of the efferent olivocochlear system with neurons originating in the brainstem and terminating below IHCs synapsing with the afferent type I dendrites. A number of substances have been proposed to function as neurotransmitter or neuromodulator in the lateral efferent system: acetylcholine, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), dopamine, enkephalin and dynorphin. With the aid of microiontophoretic tech

Regulation of systemic metabolism by the autonomic nervous system consisting of afferent and efferent innervation.

Autonomic nerves, sympathetic and parasympathetic, innervate organs and modulate their functions. It has become evident that afferent and efferent signals of the autonomic nervous system play important roles in regulating systemic metabolism, thereby maintaining homeostasis at the whole-body level. Vagal afferent nerves receive signals, such as nutrients and hormones, from the peripheral organs/tissues including the gastrointestinal tract and adipose tissue then transmit these signals to the hypothalamus, thereby regulating feeding behavior. In addition to roles in controlling appetite, areas

Remodeling of the Intracardiac Ganglia During the Development of Cardiovascular Autonomic Dysfunction in Type 2 Diabetes: Molecular Mechanisms and Therapeutics.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is one of the most significant health issues worldwide, with associated healthcare costs estimated to surpass USD 1054 billion by 2045. The leading cause of death in T2DM patients is the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). In the early stages of T2DM, patients develop cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction due to the withdrawal of cardiac parasympathetic activity. Diminished cardiac parasympathetic tone can lead to cardiac arrhythmia-related sudden cardiac death, which accounts for 50% of CVD-related deaths in T2DM patients. Regulation of cardiovascular p

Clarification of the Innervation of the Bladder, External Urethral Sphincter and Clitoris: A Neuronal Tracing Study in Female Mongrel Hound Dogs.

Many studies examining the innervation of genitourinary structures focus on either afferent or efferent inputs, or on only one structure of the system. We aimed to clarify innervation of the bladder, external urethral sphincter (EUS) and clitoris. Retrograde dyes were injected into each end organ in female dogs. Spinal cord, mid-bladder, and spinal, caudal mesenteric, sympathetic trunk and pelvic plexus ganglia were examined for retrograde dye-labeled neurons. Neurons retrogradely labeled from the bladder were found primarily in L7-S2 spinal ganglia, spinal cord lateral zona intermedia at S1-S

The nervous system of airways and its remodeling in inflammatory lung diseases.

Inflammatory lung diseases are associated with bronchospasm, cough, dyspnea and airway hyperreactivity. The majority of these symptoms cannot be primarily explained by immune cell infiltration. Evidence has been provided that vagal efferent and afferent neurons play a pivotal role in this regard. Their functions can be altered by inflammatory mediators that induce long-lasting changes in vagal nerve activity and gene expression in both peripheral and central neurons, providing new targets for treatment of pulmonary inflammatory diseases.

Sympathetic neural outflow directly recorded in patients with primary autonomic failure: clinical observations, microneurography, and histopathology.

We evaluated 2 patients with primary autonomic failure, without clinical peripheral neuropathy. One had primary autonomic failure alone (PAF), and the other had autonomic failure and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Direct intraneural recordings demonstrated a marked reduction of sympathetic efferent nerve impulse activity in the PAF patient. The patient with MSA had spontaneous bursts of sympathetic nerve impulses that confirmed the functional integrity of post-ganglionic sympathetic efferent neurons. Neurosecretory activity of these neurons correlated with the electrophysiologic findings. The

Engineering olivocochlear inhibition to reduce acoustic trauma.

Efferent brain-stem neurons release acetylcholine to desensitize cochlear hair cells and can protect the inner ear from acoustic trauma. That protection is absent from knockout mice lacking efferent inhibition and is stronger in mice with a gain-of-function point mutation of the hair cell-specific nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. The present work uses viral transduction of gain-of-function receptors to restore acoustic prophylaxis to the knockout mice. Widespread postsynaptic expression of the transgene was visualized in excised tissue with a fluorophore-conjugated peptide toxin that binds se

Single-unit and multiunit analyses of renorenal reflexes elicited by stimulation of renal chemoreceptors in the rat.

Stimulation of renal chemoreceptors, induced by backflow of concentrated urine into the renal pelvis, elicited a reflex increase in the rate of multiunit efferent renal nerve activity in rats. Ipsilateral stimulation increased the rate by 17.1 +/- 4.5%; contralateral stimulation increased the rate by 20.8 +/- 4.5%. Efferent activity returned toward control levels within the first minute following removal of the stimulus. The reflex responses were quantitatively similar in rats anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital or alpha-chloralose, but increased following complete transection of the spinal
