Panic and phobic anxiety: associations among neuroticism, physiological hyperarousal, anxiety sensitivity, and three phobias.

A dimensional and psychometrically informed taxonomy of anxiety is emerging, but the specific and nonspecific dimensions of panic and phobic anxiety require greater clarification. In this study, confirmatory factor analyses of data from a sample of 438 college students were used to validate a model of panic and phobic anxiety with six content factors; multiple scales from self-report measures were indicators of each model component. The model included a nonspecific component of (1) neuroticism and two specific components of panic attack, (2) physiological hyperarousal, and (3) anxiety sensitiv

The effect of neuroticism on depressive symptoms in Chinese college students: maternal parenting practices as moderators.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms is extremely prevalent in college students nowadays. It can cause long-term suffering and may even lead to suicidal ideation. It has been indicated by research that depression is related to a variety of psychosocial factors, the most notable being neuroticism and parenting. However, the underlying mechanisms of these variables have remained unclear. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the interaction between maternal parenting practices and neuroticism and its effects on depression. METHOD: A total of 2,692 undergraduate students were enrolled i

Neuroticism as a moderator of symptom-related distress and depression in 4 noncancer end-of-life populations.

OBJECTIVES: Neuroticism is a significant predictor of adverse psychological outcomes in patients with cancer. Less is known about how this relationship manifests in those with noncancer illness at the end-of-life (EOL). The objective of this study was to examine the impact of neuroticism as a moderator of physical symptoms and development of depression in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and frailty in the last 6 months of life. METHODS: We met this objective using secondary data collected in the D

The causal relationship of depression, anxiety, and neuroticism with main indicators of sarcopenia: A Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have shown the relationship between sarcopenia and psychiatric disorders. However, due to the limitations of traditional research methods, the causal relationship between them has not been accurately concluded. At the same time, considering that sarcopenia is mainly manifested by low muscle strength and low muscle mass, we used Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis in this study to explore the causal relationship of anxiety, depression, and neuroticism with muscle strength and muscle mass, respectively. METHODS: Genetic variants associated with depression wer

The impact of trauma-related symptoms and neuroticism on compensatory behaviors in a sample of adults with eating disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Inappropriate compensatory behaviors (ICBs), including purging, restricting, and excessive exercising, are key symptoms of several eating disorders (EDs). Studies have found positive associations between trauma and ICBs, although few studies have explored mechanisms that may explain these relationships. Emotion dysregulation has been posited as a mechanism that explains associations among ICBs and trauma. Given that individuals with high neuroticism may be particularly likely to use ICBs to regulate emotions following a trauma, the purpose of this study was to test whether neurot

Antisocial traits and neuroticism as predictors of suicidal behaviour in borderline personality disorder: A retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: The spectrum of suicidal behaviour (SB) is nuclear in the clinic and management of borderline personality disorder (BPD). The pathological personality traits of BPD intervene as risk factors for SB in confluence with other clinical and sociodemographic variables associated with BPD. The objective of this work is to evaluate the specific personality traits of BPD that are related to SB. METHODS: A cross-sectional, observational and retrospective study was carried out on a sample of 134 patients diagnosed with BPD according to DSM-5 criteria. The Millon-II, Zuckerman-Kuhlman and B

Disease trajectory of high neuroticism and the relevance to psychiatric disorders: A retro-prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Neuroticism is a psychological personality trait that has a significant impact on public health and is also a potential predisposing factor for adverse disease outcomes; however, comprehensive studies of the subsequently developed conditions are lacking. The starting point of disease trajectory in terms of genetic variation remains unclear. METHOD: Our study included 344,609 adult participants from the UK Biobank cohort who were virtually followed up from January 1, 1997. Neuroticism levels were assessed using 12 items from the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. We performed a phe

Childhood Victimization and Neuroticism Mediate the Effects of Childhood Abuse on Adulthood Depressive Symptoms in Volunteers.

BACKGROUND: When assessing patients with depressive and anxiety disorders in psychiatric clinical practice, it is common to encounter children and adolescents who have experienced abuse and victimization. To date, it has been clarified that experiences of "childhood abuse" and "childhood victimization" lead to "neuroticism", and that neuroticism leads to "adult depressive symptoms". In this study, we analyzed how these four factors are interrelated. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The following self-administered questionnaire surveys were conducted in 576 adult volunteers: Patient Health Questionnaire-

Neuroticism and adverse life events are important determinants in functional somatic disorders: the DanFunD study.

Several psychological factors have been proposed to be associated with functional somatic disorders (FSD). However, large population-based studies investigating the importance of both personality and adverse life events (ALE) are sparse. This study aimed to investigate the association between FSD and neuroticism and the accumulated number of ALE, respectively. This cross-sectional study included a random sample of the adult Danish population (N = 7493). FSD were established by means of self-reported questionnaires and diagnostic interviews. Neuroticism was measured with the Danish version of t

Sex-specific psychological risk profiles of CVD in the HUNT study: the role of neuroticism and extraversion.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate psychological risk profiles of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Depression and anxiety have been linked to CVD, but research has not incorporated personality and sex-specific analyses are warranted. In this study, we examine the role of sex, neuroticism, extraversion, anxiety and depression on the risk of CVD. METHOD: Using data from the HUNT-study and the mortality register, 32,383 (57.10% men) participants were followed for an average of 10.48 years. During this time, 142 died of myocardial infarction (MI) and 111 of stroke. RESULTS: Cox regression showed

Compulsory Citizenship Behavior and Facades of Conformity: A Moderated Mediation Model of Neuroticism and Citizenship Pressure.

Drawing on the social exchange theory, this study investigates how compulsory citizenship behavior (CCB) produces facades of conformity through citizenship pressure, and whether neuroticism moderates the relationship among them. This study surveyed 356 employees (259 males, 97 females; average age 37.7 years) of a northern Taiwanese corporation to investigate the relationship among CCB, citizenship pressure, and facades of conformity. The study found that neuroticism moderates the strength of the indirect effect of CCB and facades of conformity through citizenship pressure, such that the media

A meta-analysis of polygenic risk scores for mood disorders, neuroticism, and schizophrenia in antidepressant response.

About two-thirds of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) fail to achieve symptom remission after the initial antidepressant treatment. Despite a role of genetic factors was proven, the specific underpinnings are not fully understood yet. Polygenic risk scores (PRSs), which summarise the additive effect of multiple risk variants across the genome, might provide insights into the underlying genetics. This study aims to investigate the possible association of PRSs for bipolar disorder, MDD, neuroticism, and schizophrenia (SCZ) with antidepressant non-response or non-remission in patients

Stress exposure across the life span cumulatively increases depression risk and is moderated by neuroticism.

BACKGROUND: Even though traumatic stress is a major risk factor for depression, most people do not develop a depression. The effects of stress may particularly emerge after repeated exposure in vulnerable individuals. Therefore, we hypothesized that (1) increased exposure to stress across the life span is associated with an increased depression risk and (2) this effect is the most pronounced in individuals with high levels of neuroticism. METHODS: We investigated the effect of childhood maltreatment, major life events, daily hassles, and a composite index thereof (cumulative stress index) on

Contribution of chronic pain and neuroticism to abnormal forebrain gray matter in patients with temporomandibular disorder.

Cortical plasticity is thought to occur following continuous barrage of nociceptive afferent signals to the brain. Hence, chronic pain is presumed to induce anatomical and physiological changes in the brain over time. Inherent factors, some pre-dating the onset of chronic pain, may also contribute to brain abnormalities present in patients. In this study we used structural MRI to examine whether patients with chronic temporomandibular (TMD) pain have abnormalities in gray matter (GM) within brain areas implicated in pain, modulation and sensorimotor function. We found that patients with TMD ha

The personality trait of neuroticism is strongly associated with long-term morbidity in testicular cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Neuroticism is a personality trait expressing nervousness and insecurity. Associations between neuroticism and morbidity in long-term cancer survivors have hardly been explored. The aim of this study was to explore associations between neuroticism and somatic and mental morbidity and lifestyle issues in long-term survivors of testicular cancer (TCSs). MATERIAL AND METHODS: All Norwegian TCSs treated between 1980 and 1994 (n = 1 814) were invited to this cross-sectional study. Among them 1 428 (79% response rate) delivered valid data. Neuroticism was self-rated on an abridged versi

Mitral valve prolapse and neuroticism in chest pain patients with normal and diseased coronary arteries.

Patients with chest pain and normal coronary arteries (NCA) score higher on measures of neuroticism than patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). This relationship, coupled with findings linking mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and anxiety disorders, led us to examine prospectively the possibility that a greater incidence of MVP among NCA patients accounts for their elevated neuroticism scores. One-hundred-forty-four patients completed psychological tests and a structured interview prior to cardiac catheterization. Forty-one of the 144 patients (28%) had normal coronary arteries. Within the NCA

A Longitudinal Examination of Anxiety as a Mediator in the Relationship Between Neuroticism and Dimension of Depression Among Adolescents.

This study aimed to examine the longitudinal relationship among neuroticism, anxiety, and depression in a sample of Chinese adolescents. A total of 1150 participants aged 14-19 years completed assessments of neuroticism, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. They had a baseline measurement, followed by six follow - up assessments one month apart over six months. A multi-wave longitudinal design was employed to capture the temporal dynamics of these constructs. Results from multilevel modeling indicated that higher levels of neuroticism were associated with increased anxiety and depressive symptoms

The Predictive Validity of Consensual and Unique Facets of Neuroticism, Conscientiousness, and Agreeableness in Five Personality Inventories.

Consensual facet structures help to unify a highly fractured personality literature, but mask information obtained from unique personality facets assessed by individual personality inventories. The current study identifies the consensual and unique facets of neuroticism, conscientiousness, and agreeableness based on analyses of five widely used personality inventories (Disinhibition Inventory-I [DIS-I], Faceted Inventory for the Five-Factor model [FI-FFM], HEXACO Personality Inventory-Revised [HEXACO-PI-R], NEO Personality Inventory-3 [NEO-PI-3], and Temperament and Affectivity Inventory [TAI]
