Motor vehicle crashes and maternal mortality in New Mexico: the significance of seat belt use.

In recent years, as deaths from medical complications during pregnancy have declined, injuries-specifically those sustained in motor vehicle crashes-represent a growing proportion of all pregnancy-associated deaths. To investigate pregnancy-associated deaths in motor vehicle crashes in New Mexico, we scrutinized the database of the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator for all deaths during pregnancy and up to 6 weeks postpartum from 1986 through 1995. A total of 97 deaths were identified, 47 of which were injury-related. Motor vehicle crashes accounted for 33 (approximately 70%) of th

Trends in prostate cancer incidence and mortality in New Mexico are consistent with an increase in effective screening.

The increasing occurrence of prostate cancer in the United States has led to recommendations for routine prostate cancer screening in men aged 50 years and older. Although present methods of prostate cancer screening have not been shown to reduce mortality, screening using digital rectal examination or prostate-specific antigen does detect tumors at earlier stages. To assess whether trends in incidence and mortality rates are consistent with an increase in effective screening in New Mexico, we examined prostate cancer incidence rates calculated from data collected by the New Mexico Tumor Regis

Radiographic manifestations of plaque in New Mexico, 1975-1980. A review of 42 proved cases.

The radiographic findings in 42 proved cases of plague are examined. There was a high association between bilateral alveolar infiltrates and secondary pneumonic plague; however, these findings were not completely specific, as they were also seen in some patients who had disseminated intravascular coagulation or shock lung, In an endemic area and in the proper clinical setting, any patient with bilateral alveolar infiltrates should be considered to have secondary pneumonic plague until proved otherwise.

The Benefits of Licensed Midwifery and Community Birth Among BIPOC Birthing People in New Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) families comprise a disproportionately low percentage of home and freestanding birth center births in New Mexico (NM), despite NM Medicaid coverage of care by Licensed Midwives (LMs) in these settings. The purpose of this study was to examine why low income BIPOC seek out LM care, how they benefit from this model of care, and which factors facilitate and obstruct access. METHODS: We conducted 7 focus groups with 55 low income BIPOC individuals who had birthed in New Mexico in the past 5 years. Participants in four of the groups intend

The New Face of Human Rabies in Mexico, What's Next After Eradicating Rabies in Dogs.

In pre-Hispanic Mexico, dogs were not identified as an important source of rabies. We know from codexes and chronicles of the conquerors that at that time, rabies cases in humans and domestic animals were caused by local wildlife species such as bats. Canine-rabies virus variant seems to have arrived with Europeans. The first documented case of canine rabies in the Americas is found in Mexico in the Annals of the Holy Inquisition (16th century). During Mexico's independence, cases were frequently reported. In the 19th century the first attempts to control human rabies were made through sanitar

A distributional synopsis of the Pentatomidae (Heteroptera) north of Mexico, including new state and provincial records.

The species of Pentatomidae known to occur north of Mexico, comprising 223 species in 68 genera, are enumerated with taxonomic notes and updated and annotated distributions. Included in this update are 126 new state records reported for 62 pentatomid species in 30 genera. The copious annotations in these distributions and attendant bibliography serve as an extensive compilation of overlooked references that might contain distributional records for other insect, especially heteropteran, species.

Gallbladder cancer: review of a rare orphan gastrointestinal cancer with a focus on populations of New Mexico.

Gallbladder cancer is a rare malignancy of the biliary tract with a poor prognosis, frequently presenting at an advanced stage. While rare in the United States overall, gallbladder cancer has an elevated incidence in geographically distinct locations of the globe including Chile, North India, Korea, Japan and the state of New Mexico in the United States. People with Native American ancestry have a much elevated incidence of gallbladder cancer compared to Hispanic and non-Hispanic white populations of New Mexico. Gallbladder cancer is also one of the few bi-gendered cancers with an elevated fem

Opioid use in Albuquerque, New Mexico: a needs assessment of recent changes and treatment availability.

BACKGROUND: New Mexico has consistently high rates of drug-induced deaths, and opioid-related treatment admissions have been increasing over the last two decades. Youth in New Mexico are at particular risk: they report higher rates of nonmedical prescription opioid use than those over age 25, are more likely than their national counterparts to have tried heroin, and represent an increasing proportion of heroin overdoses. METHODS: Commissioned by the City of Albuquerque, semistructured interviews were conducted from April to June of 2011 with 24 substance use treatment agencies and eight key s

Adding sexual orientation questions to statewide public health surveillance: New Mexico's experience.

We examined refusal rates for sensitive demographic questions to determine whether questions on sexual orientation are too sensitive for routine use on public health surveys. We compared the percentage of active refusals in New Mexico for a sexual orientation question and 6 other sensitive demographic questions. In 2007 and 2008, refusal rates for sexual orientation questions were similar to rates for questions on race/ethnicity and weight and significantly lower than rates for questions on household income. Perceptions that sexual orientation is too controversial a topic to be included on sta

The checkerboard area health system: delivering comprehensive care in a remote region of New Mexico.

A comprehensive health center is defined as the synergistic coupling of a medical and administrative structure designed to provide inpatient, outpatient, and public health services. While health centers have been widely established in other countries, only limited implementation has occurred in rural areas of the United States. The successful implementation of the health center concept in a sparsely populated area of northwestern New Mexico, which is predominately inhabited by Navajo Indians and Spanish Americans, is descriptively analyzed. The physical environment and the socioeconomic charac

Demographic and Health Characteristics in Hispanic versus non-Hispanic Groups Experiencing Homelessness in New Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined health disparities between Hispanic/Latino and non-Hispanic/Latino individuals experiencing homelessness. Nearly half the population in that State identifies as Hispanic/Latino. As homelessness is increasing nationally, we sought to examine how the Hispanic/Latino is represented among people experiencing homelessness in new Mexico, where homelessness is also increasing. METHODS: This study analyzed data from the 11-county survey in New Mexico of people experiencing homelessness, examining demographic characteristics, disease prevalence, and healthcare acce

Reconstruction of fallout deposition from U.S. atmospheric nuclear tests conducted in New Mexico and Nevada.

Between 1945 and 1962, the United States conducted 101 atmospheric nuclear weapon tests in New Mexico and Nevada, dispersing radioactive fallout across the contiguous United States. We reconstruct the first 10 days of fission-product deposition from the 94 non-zero-yield tests using U.S. government test data, benchmarked particle-size distributions, and the HYSPLIT atmospheric transport model driven by high-resolution ERA5 reanalysis. Comparisons with county-level iodine-131 deposition estimates from the National Cancer Institute show good agreement for tower and surface tests and motivate ref

Seroprevalence and molecular surveillance of Dirofilaria immitis in shelter dogs from central New Mexico, USA.

BACKGROUND: Dirofilaria immitis, the causative agent of canine heartworm disease, is a mosquito-borne filarial nematode, endemic to most of North America. Clinical signs may include coughing, exercise intolerance, abnormal heart sounds, and lethargy, which can lead to heart failure and death in severe cases. For accurate diagnosis, the American Heartworm Society (AHS) recommends testing dogs annually for the detection of heartworm antigens and microfilariae. In this study, we assessed the prevalence and potential risk factors for D. immitis in dogs from Albuquerque, New Mexico, using antigen a

Divergent Rabies Virus Variant of Probable Bat Origin in 2 Gray Foxes, New Mexico, USA.

In the Western Hemisphere, bat-associated rabies viruses (RABVs) have established independent transmission cycles in multiple mammal hosts, forming genetically distinct lineages. In New Mexico, USA, skunks, bats, and gray foxes are rabies reservoir hosts and represent a public health risk because of encounters with humans. During 2015 and 2019, two previously undescribed RABVs were detected in 2 gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) in Lincoln County, New Mexico. Phylogenetic analysis of the nucleoprotein gene indicated that the isolates are a novel RABV variant. These 2 cases probably represe

Two New Species of Haematoloechus (Digenea: Plagiorchidae) Parasitizing Rana brownorum (Amphibia: Ranidae) from Southeast Mexico.

In an ongoing investigation on the helminths of amphibians in southeastern Mexico, specimens of 2 undescribed species of Haematoloechus were collected from Rana brownorum. Haematoloechus ceciliae n. sp. is morphologically most similar to Haematoloechus meridionalis, but differs in the shape of the oral sucker, in the nature of the acetabulum, and in the distribution of the glandular cells in the pharyngeal region; Haematoloechus celestunensis n. sp. closely resembles Haematoloechus floedae, but differs in the form and size of the testes and measurements of acetabulum. A new species of Heteromyoxyuris (Nematoda: Oxyuridae), parasite of Perognathus flavus (Rodentia: Heteromyidae) from Mexico.

Heteromyoxyuris otomii n. sp., which inhabits the intestinal caecum of Perognathus flavus (Heteromyidae), in Zaragoza, Hidalgo, Mexico, is described. This new species differs from the 2 other congeneric species in the morphology and length of lateral alae in males. Heteromyoxyuris deserti has simple lateral alae located at both sides of the body, whereas in the new species, these structures are double at both sides; in contrast, lateral alae of Heteromyoxyuris longejector begin at the posterior half of the body, whereas they arise in the first third in the new species. Advocacy in Action: Advancing State Policy Change to Strengthen School Nurse Salaries in New Mexico.

School nurses are vital advocates for student health, yet the New Mexico workforce has long faced staffing shortages and significant pay inequities. This article describes a successful policy advocacy campaign by the New Mexico School Nurses Association to achieve salary parity. By collecting and leveraging data, including statewide surveys and salary schedule audits, advocates demonstrated that school nurse compensation failed to match the state-mandated three-tiered pay scale guaranteed to teachers. This effort culminated in the passage of House Bill 195 in 2025, standardizing state-wide sch

Multidrug-resistant Shigella flexneri outbreak affecting humans and non-human primates in New Mexico, USA.

Shigellosis is a gastrointestinal infection caused by species of Shigella. A large outbreak of Shigella flexneri serotype 2a occurred in Albuquerque, New Mexico between May 2021 and November 2023 that involved humans and non-human primates (NHP) from a local zoo. We analyzed the genomes of 202 New Mexican isolates as well as 15 closely related isolates from other states, and four from NHP. The outbreak was initially detected within men who have sex with men but then predominantly affected people experiencing homelessness. Nearly 70% of cases were hospitalized and there was one human death. The
