A modelling approach to global nitrate leaching caused by anthropogenic fertilisation.

Water quality associated with nitrate (NO3-) leaching from agricultural soils is an important environmental issue. This paper describes a new modelling approach to quantitatively evaluate the effect of the use of fertilisers on global nitrate leaching. A global process-based simulation model was previously developed for the nitrogen cycle in terrestrial ecosystems, in which soil inorganic nitrogen in the form of ammonium (NH4+) and NO3- was considered. After introducing data on world fertiliser consumption (FAO, 1995) into the steady-state model, the extent of disturbance to the nitrogen cycle

A lignocellulose-degrading synthetic microbial community alters physicochemical properties, microbial community structure, and functional gene potential during green waste-cattle manure co-vermicomposting.

Co-vermicomposting high-lignin green waste with cattle manure can improve nutrient supply and microbial activity; however, this technology remains limited in terms of lignocellulose degradation efficiency and product quality improvement. This study evaluated the effects of 5% calcium superphosphate (SSP), 5% synthetic lignocellulose-degrading microbial communities (SynComs), and their combined addition on vermicompost quality, microbial communities, and the functional potential related to carbohydrate degradation and nitrogen cycling. The results showed that all treatments maintained a neutral

Microbial Functional Potentials Differ Among Monospecific and Mixed Moss Biocrusts in an Alpine Sandy Ecosystem.

Moss-dominated biological soil crusts are associated with carbon and nitrogen cycling in dryland and alpine sandy ecosystems, but functional differentiation among closely related moss species and their mixed assemblages remains unclear. We used shotgun metagenomic sequencing to compare below-crust soil associated with Didymodon constrictus (Mitt.) K. Saito (D. constrictus) crusts (mossC), ferrugineus (Schimp. ex Besch.) M.O. Hill (D. ferrugineus) crusts (mossF), and visually co-dominated mixed crusts (mossM) in the Gonghe Basin on the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Fifteen spatially separ

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation is a major N-sink in aquifer systems around the world.

Global-scale N-oxide contamination of groundwater within aquifers occurs due to the widespread use of N-bearing fertilizers and chemicals, threatening both human and environmental health. However, the conversion of these pollutants in active nitrogen (N) cycling processes in the subsurface biosphere still remains unclear. This study investigates the global occurrence of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) in aquifers, where anammox was found to be turned on and off between saturated and unsaturated soil horizons, and contributed 36.8-79.5% to N loss in saturated soil horizons, the remainder

A denitrifying community associated with a major, marine nitrogen fixer.

The diazotrophic cyanobacterium, Trichodesmium, is an integral component of the marine nitrogen cycle and contributes significant amounts of new nitrogen to oligotrophic, tropical/subtropical ocean surface waters. Trichodesmium forms macroscopic, fusiform (tufts), spherical (puffs) and raft-like colonies that provide a pseudobenthic habitat for a host of other organisms including marine invertebrates, microeukaryotes and numerous other microbes. The diversity and activity of denitrifying bacteria found in association with the colonies was interrogated using a series of molecular-based methodol

Nitrogen Scavengers: History, Clinical Considerations and Future Prospects.

Nitrogen scavengers play a critical role in treating acute and chronic hyperammonemia, especially in urea cycle disorders (UCDs), where impaired ammonia detoxification leads to toxic nitrogen accumulation. These agents complement low-protein diets and urea cycle intermediates. Sodium benzoate and sodium phenylacetate are the main scavengers, conjugating with glycine and glutamine to form hippurate and phenylacetylglutamine, which are excreted in urine. This therapeutic approach, introduced in the 1980s, was based on early findings linking benzoate to reduced urea excretion. Nitrogen scavengers

Transcriptomic responses to shifts in light and nitrogen in two congeneric diatom species.

Light and nitrogen availability are basic requirements for photosynthesis. Changing in light intensity and nitrogen concentration may require adaptive physiological and life process changes in phytoplankton cells. Our previous study demonstrated that two Thalassiosira species exhibited, respectively, distinctive physiological responses to light and nitrogen stresses. Transcriptomic analyses were employed to investigate the mechanisms behind the different physiological responses observed in two diatom species of the genus Thalassiosira. The results indicate that the congeneric species are diffe

Nutrient emission policies for multiple clean emissions goals based on water elemental balance.

China has substantially improved wastewater collection and concentration-based control of total nitrogen and total phosphorus, yet nutrient stoichiometric imbalance remains a persistent pressure on river basins. This study developed a national-scale C:N:P stoichiometric assessment of nutrient generation, wastewater discharge, and receiving-water conditions within the coupled social-natural water cycle. Literature-derived wastewater data from 450 publications, provincial wastewater and socio-environmental statistics from 2001 to 2023, and 9.86 million receiving-water monitoring records from 170

Two-Decade Nitrogen and Water Additions Stimulate Temperate Grassland Carbon Fluxes through Plant Trait Shifts and Soil Moisture Enhancement.

Atmospheric nitrogen deposition and increased precipitation are key drivers of grassland carbon cycling; however, their long-term interactive effects and mechanisms remain poorly understood. Based on a 20 year field experiment with sustained nitrogen (10 g N m-2 yr-1) and precipitation (+∼50% precipitation) addition in a temperate grassland in northern China, we found that both nitrogen deposition and precipitation addition significantly enhanced net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE), ecosystem respiration (ER), and gross ecosystem productivity (GEP), with additive effects of nitrogen and water add

Menstrual cycle and exercise effects on protein catabolism.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether exercise at different times of the menstrual cycle alters protein catabolism. Nine women exercised for 60 min at 70% VO2max when serum estradiol (E) and progesterone (P) were low (menses) and when both were high [mid-luteal (ML)]. Diet was reproduced on both occasions. Serum urea nitrogen (N), E, and P were analyzed at rest, after 15, 30, 45, and 60 min of exercise, and 15 min into recovery. Sweat urea N excretion was also determined. Urinary area N excretion was measured the day before, the day of, and 2 d following exercise. E and P

Effect of Hydrogen on High Cycle Fatigue Properties of L360 Pipeline Steel Notched Specimens.

The fatigue characteristics of notched specimens of L360 pipeline steel in hydrogen and nitrogen environments were investigated by high cycle fatigue life tests and fatigue crack growth rate tests. The fracture morphology in the nitrogen environment was dominated by microcracks and fatigue strips. The fatigue fracture had distinctly different regions in the hydrogen environment. The outer region of the fracture in the hydrogen environment was similar to the nitrogen environment, but a large number of hydrogen embrittlement features were found in the inner region. The fatigue crack growth rate

Linked nitrogen and carbon dynamics reveal distinct pools and patterns in a deep, weathered bedrock rhizosphere.

Nitrogen is one of the most limiting nutrients to forest productivity worldwide. Recently, it has been established that diverse ecosystems source a substantial fraction of their water from weathered bedrock, leading to questions about whether root-driven nitrogen cycling extends into weathered bedrock as well. In this study, we specifically examined nitrogen dynamics using specialized instrumentation distributed across a 16 m weathered bedrock vadose zone (WBVZ) underlying an old growth forest in northern California where the rhizosphere-composed of plant roots and their associated microbiome-

Effects of the addition of nitrogen and phosphorus on anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled with iron reduction (Feammox) in the farmland soils.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled with iron reduction is termed as Feammox, and is a new nitrogen removal process. However, there is a paucity of studies on the response of nutrient additions on Feammox process in farmland ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the shifts of Feammox and iron-reducers under nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) applications via isotopic tracing and high-throughput sequencing technology. In the isotopic tracing experiment, Feammox rates was significantly greater in the N and/or P applications soil (0.184-0.239 μg N g-1 day-1) than in the no fertilizer soil (0.1

The effects of phytophagous insects on water and soil nutrient concentrations and fluxes through forest stands of the Level II monitoring network in the UK.

The effects of insect defoliators on throughfall and soil nutrient fluxes were studied in coniferous and deciduous stands at five UK intensive monitoring plots (1998 to 2008). Links were found between the dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) fluxes through the forest system to biological activity within the canopy. Underlying soil type determined the leaching or accumulation of these elements. Under oak, monitored at two sites, frass from caterpillars of Tortrix viridana and Operophtera brumata added direct deposition of ~16kgha(-1)extra N during defoliation. Peaks of

Exploration of biogenic nitrogen doped carbon microspheres derived from resorcinol-formaldehyde as anode for lithium and sodium ion batteries.

The study explores biogenic nitrogen doped carbon microspheres derived from resorcinol, formaldehyde (BNCMs), for battery application. Ureolytic bacteria were used to produce biogenic ammonia in the form of ammonium carbonate and ammonium bicarbonate. Copolymerization of resorcinol, formaldehyde and biogenic ammonia at 60-80 °C produces BNCMs. Elemental analysis evidences that the nitrogen-enriched carbon microspheres contain about 8% of nitrogen. The BNCMs anode exhibits appreciable reversible capacity and excellent rate performance in lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium ion batteries (SI

KOH-modified hydrochar with nitrogen-fixing bacteria alleviates aluminum toxicity and mitigates acidification-driven nitrogen loss in soybean rhizosphere.

Soil acidification severely constrains crop production by reducing nitrogen bioavailability. Although hydrochar shows promise for soil remediation, its application in acidified soils remains challenging due to its intrinsic acidity. Here, we developed an innovative strategy combining KOH-modified hydrochar (KOHC) with nitrogen-fixing microbial aggregates (MGs) and investigated its effects on rhizosphere acidification and nitrogen cycling in soybean. Pot experiments and multi-omics analyses revealed that 2% KOHC-MGs treatment significantly promoted the aggregation of rhizosphere nitrogen-fixing

Urea cycle disorders-update.

The urea cycle is a metabolic pathway for the disposal of excess nitrogen, which arises primarily as ammonia. Nitrogen is essential for growth and life-maintenance, but excessive ammonia leads to life-threatening conditions. The urea cycle disorders (UCDs) comprise diseases presenting with hyperammonemia that arise in either the neonatal period (about 50% of cases) or later. Congenital defects of the enzymes or transporters of the urea cycle cause the disease. This cycle utilizes five enzymes, two of which, carbamoylphosphate synthetase 1 and ornithine transcarbamylase are present in the mitoc

In vivo urea cycle flux distinguishes and correlates with phenotypic severity in disorders of the urea cycle.

Urea cycle disorders are a group of inborn errors of hepatic metabolism that result in often life-threatening hyperammonemia and hyperglutaminemia. Clinical and laboratory diagnosis of partial deficiencies during asymptomatic periods is difficult, and correlation of phenotypic severity with either genotype and/or in vitro enzyme activity is often imprecise. We hypothesized that stable isotopically determined in vivo rates of total body urea synthesis and urea cycle-specific nitrogen flux would correlate with both phenotypic severity and carrier status in patients with a variety of different en

Soil water and inorganic nitrogen contents drive soil microbial carbon fixation during wetland reclamation and restoration.

Wetlands are critical terrestrial carbon sinks, playing a vital role in mitigating global warming by fixing substantial atmospheric carbon dioxide. To explore how wetland reclamation and restoration affect soil microbial carbon fixation, we sampled soils from five land-use types in western Jilin Province, China: undisturbed natural reed wetland, reclaimed rice paddy and upland field, restored agricultural drainage wetland and naturally restored wetland after farmland abandonment. We analyzed the effects of wetland reclamation and restoration on microbial communities, metabolic pathways, and ca
