Sterilization characteristics of narrow tubing by nitrogen oxides generated in atmospheric pressure air plasma.

The sterilization characteristics of active species generated by an atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge plasma using air and oxygen at the inner surface of silicone tubing were investigated. A dielectric barrier discharge torch plasma device was installed at one end of the tube and generated long-lived active species that flowed into the tube. A strip-type biological indicator with a 105-cell bacterial spore was placed at the opposite end of the 60 cm tube. Sterilization was completed within 30 min by active particles generated from the air plasma. The main factors contributing to the ste

Abatement of Nitrogen Oxides via Selective Catalytic Reduction over Ce1-W1 Atom-Pair Sites.

Environmentally benign CeO2-WO3/TiO2 catalysts are promising alternatives to commercial toxic V2O5-WO3/TiO2 for controlling NOx emission via selective catalytic reduction (SCR), but the insufficient catalytic activity of CeO2-WO3/TiO2 catalysts is one of the obstacles in their applications because of a lack of an in-depth understanding of the CeO2-WO3 interactions. Herein, we design a Ce1-W1/TiO2 model catalyst by anchoring Ce1-W1 atom pairs on anatase TiO2(001) to investigate the synergy between Ce and W in SCR. A series of characterizations combined with density functional theory calculation

Abating ammonia is more cost-effective than nitrogen oxides for mitigating PM2.5 air pollution.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5, particles with a mass median aerodynamic diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers) in the atmosphere is associated with severe negative impacts on human health, and the gases sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and ammonia are the main PM2.5 precursors. However, their contribution to global health impacts has not yet been analyzed. Here, we show that nitrogen accounted for 39% of global PM2.5 exposure in 2013, increasing from 30% in 1990 with rising reactive nitrogen emissions and successful controls on sulfur dioxide. Nitrogen emissions to air caused an estimated 23.

Spatial and Temporal Trends in Global Emissions of Nitrogen Oxides from 1960 to 2014.

The quantification of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions is critical for air quality modeling. Based on updated fuel consumption and emission factor databases, a global emission inventory was compiled with high spatial (0.1° × 0.1°), temporal (monthly), and source (87 sources) resolutions for the period 1960 to 2014. The monthly emission data have been uploaded online ( http://inventory.pku.edu.cn ), along with a number of other air pollutant and greenhouse gas data for free download. Differences in source profiles, not global total quantities, between our results and those reported previously wer

Reaction monitoring of tocopherols with active nitrogen oxides by ultra high-speed liquid chromatography.

Ultra high-speed liquid chromatography (LC) has become increasingly popular in analytical research fields. This analytical system provides fast and efficient chromatographic separation over a wide range of flow rate and pressure. In this study, we applied an ultra high-speed LC system to monitor the reaction of α-, γ-, and δ-tocopherols with active nitrogen species. By using an ultra high-speed LC system equipped with a photo-diode array detector, short time analysis and detection of a wide range of reaction products were accomplished efficiently. The analysis time of tocopherol and its major

Temporal evolution of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the city of Volos, Greece.

The goal of this work is the analysis of air quality levels in the area of Volos, a city of average size on the eastern seaboard of Central Greece. For this purpose, concentration measurements of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and nitrogen dioxide, for a 4-year period (2001-2004) are analyzed. Air pollution data were obtained by a monitoring station, fully automated, which was established by the Hellenic Ministry of the Environment, Physical Planning, and Public Works, in order to measure air pollution levels in Volos, a medium-sized city, which faces the effects of industrialization. The mai

Simultaneous soot combustion and nitrogen oxides storage on potassium-promoted hydrotalcite-based CoMgAlO catalysts.

A series of potassium-promoted hydrotalcite-based CoMgAlO mixed oxide catalysts used for simultaneous soot combustion and nitrogen oxides storage were prepared by impregnation method. The techniques of TG/DTA, XRD, H2-TPR and in situ DRIFTS were employed for catalyst characterization. Over the catalyst containing 7.5% or 10% K, the soot ignition temperature (Ti=260 degrees C) and total removal temperature (Tf=390 degrees C) are decreased by 180 degrees C and 273 degrees C, respectively, as compared with the uncatalyzed reaction. The results of kinetic calculation show that the presence of K-pr

Impact of age on pH, 8-isoprostane, and nitrogen oxides in exhaled breath condensate.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have addressed the effects of aging on levels of inflammatory markers in exhaled breath condensate (EBC). The aim of this study was to determine whether there are significant age-associated differences in pH, 8-isoprostane, and nitrogen oxide values in EBC from a population of healthy adults. MATERIAL AND METHODS: EBC samples were obtained from 75 healthy volunteers aged 18 to 80 years and stratified into five groups according to age (n = 15): 18 to 29, 30 to 39 years, 40 to 49 years, 50 to 59 years, and 60 to 80 years. The following were measured in the samples collec

Photocatalytic activity for degradation of nitrogen oxides over visible light responsive titania-based photocatalysts.

This study investigates photocatalytic degradation of nitrogen oxides overtitania-based photocatalysts illuminated by ultraviolet and visible light. The TiO2 photocatalyst was synthesized in a sol-gel process using titanium butoxide as the precursor. After calcination between 150 and 300 degrees C, the synthesized TiO2 responded strongly to visible light photocatalytically degrading NO(x), probably because of the existence of carbonaceous species that act as sensitizers. The optimum calcination temperature was found to be around 200 degrees C. Additionally, platinum ion-doped TiO2 was prepared

Heterozygotes of NOS3 polymorphisms contribute to reduced nitrogen oxides in high-altitude pulmonary edema.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: High-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), which develops on exertion under hypoxic conditions, aggravates due to endothelial dysfunction. Repeat events of the disorder suggests of genetic susceptibility. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene (NOS3), a regulator of vasodilation, has emerged as a strong candidate marker. In the present study, we investigated G894T, 27-base-pair 4b/4a (variable number of tandem repeat), -922A/G, and -786T/C polymorphisms of NOS3, individually or in combination, for an association with HAPE. DESIGN: A cross-sectional case control study. SETTINGS:

Effects of NO2 and SO2 on selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides by ammonia.

The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) characteristics of NO and NO(2) over V(2)O(5)-WO(3)-MnO(2)/TiO(2) catalyst using ammonia as a reducing agent have been determined in a fixed-bed reactor at 200-400 degrees C. The presence of NO(2) enhances the SCR activity at lower temperatures and the optimum ratio of NO(2)/NO(x) is found to be 0.5. During the SCR reactions, there are some side reactions occurred such as ammonia oxidation and N(2)O formation. At higher temperatures, the selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia and the nitrous oxide formation compete with the SCR reactions. The denitrifi

Microperoxidase 8 catalysed nitrogen oxides formation from oxidation of N-hydroxyguanidines by hydrogen peroxide.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a potent intra- and intercellular messenger involved in the control of vascular tone, neuronal signalling and host response to infection. In mammals, NO is synthesized by oxidation of l-arginine catalysed by hemeproteins called NO-synthases with intermediate formation of Nomega-hydroxy-l-arginine (NOHA). NOHA and some hydroxyguanidines have been shown to be able to deliver nitrogen oxides including NO in the presence of various oxidative systems. In this study, NOHA and a model compound, N-(4-chlorophenyl)-N'-hydroxyguanidine, were tested for their ability to generate NO i

A note on the emission of nitrogen oxides from silage in opened bunker silos.

The evolution of NOx from grass and maize silages was measured using chemiluminescence in samples kept in airtight containers, in the silos and in a 750 kg mass removed to a mixer waggon. Measurements were made on the grass and maize silos in two consecutive years. The results show that there is continuous evolution of NOx after silos have been opened and that high concentrations persist in the mass which are rapidly released on agitation at the feed-out. The maximum recorded concentrations of NO and NO2 were 1985 and 152 ppbv respectively. These values are orders of magnitude greater than for

Induction of a sister-chromatid exchange by nitrogen oxides and its prevention by SOD.

Observations were made on the increase in the frequency of sister-chromatid exchanges (SCEs) induced by a nitric oxide (NO) releaser (NOR4) and NaNO2 in Chinese hamster lung cells (CHL/IU). During these observations, NaNO3 did not have any effect on SCE induction. NOR4- and NaNO2- induced SCE frequencies decreased due to treatment with bovine serum (10%), bovine serum albumin (BSA, 0.1%, 1.0%), oxyhemoglobin (Hb, 10 microM), and superoxide dismutase (SOD, 250 U/ml), but not with glutathione (oxidized and reduced forms), cysteine, cystine and catalase. NO2- concentrations decreased with Hb, but

S-nitrosothiols and the bioregulatory actions of nitrogen oxides through reactions with thiol groups.

The reactivity of selected RS-NOs has led to the misconception that these compounds are uniformly unstable under physiological conditions. Moreover, current evidence supports the notion that biological responses elicited by RS-NOs may result from either liberation of nitric oxide or from NO group transfer chemistry involving either NO+ or NO-. Some evidence suggests that such reactions may be enzymatically controlled. The data supporting the potential biological relevance of RS-NOs include: (1) evidence that these compounds form under physiological conditions; (2) their identification in insec

A case study of the relative effects of power plant nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide emission reductions on atmospheric nitrogen deposition.

The contrasting effects of point source nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) air emission reductions on regional atmospheric nitrogen deposition are analyzed for the case study of a coal-fired power plant in the southeastern United States. The effect of potential emission reductions at the plant on nitrogen deposition to Escambia Bay and its watershed on the Florida-Alabama border is simulated using the three-dimensional Eulerian Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. A method to quantify the relative and individual effects of NOx versus SO2 controls on nitrogen deposition us

Nitrogen oxides concentration and emission change detection during COVID-19 restrictions in North India.

COVID-19 related restrictions lowered particulate matter and trace gas concentrations across cities around the world, providing a natural opportunity to study effects of anthropogenic activities on emissions of air pollutants. In this paper, the impact of sudden suspension of human activities on air pollution was analyzed by studying the change in satellite retrieved NO2 concentrations and top-down NOx emission over the urban and rural areas around Delhi. NO2 was chosen for being the most indicative of emission intensity due to its short lifetime of the order of a few hours in the planetary bo
