Micro-electrophoretic studies in the cat pulvinar region: effect of acetylcholine.

1. In the posterior half of the pulvinar of cats anaesthetized with halothane and nitrous oxide, the majority of neurons were fired by ACh released with small electrophoretic currents. In the anterior part of that nucleus, ACh had more variable effects: excitation, depression or none. 2. In comparison with L-glutamate, DL-homocysteic acid and DL-aspartic acid, ACh appeared to be the most potent excitant. 3. ACh-induced discharges were easily and reversibly blocked by low doses of atropine. In most cases, ACh effects could not be blocked selectively by mecamylamine or dihydro-beta-erythroidine.

Frozen Hydrogen Peroxide and Nitrite Solution: The Acceleration of Benzoic Acid Oxidation via the Decreased pH in Ice.

We investigated benzoic acid oxidation via the reaction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitrite (NO2-). The oxidation of benzoic acid by reactive nitrous acid (HONO) was negligible, and the reactivity of the H2O2/NO2- system decreased with a decrease in temperature under aqueous conditions. However, freezing markedly accelerated the chemical reaction. Based on Raman microscope measurements, concentrated species were confirmed in certain regions of the ice. We proposed that the change in nitrite speciation (accordingly, a decrease in the pH below pKa), derived from the freezing concentration ef

Formic Acid-Intensified Photoreduction of NOx on Iron Minerals Triggers Daytime HONO Formation through Active Hydrogen.

Nitrous acid (HONO) is crucial in atmospheric chemistry as a precursor to morning peak hydroxyl radicals and significantly affects urban air quality by forming secondary pollutants, yet the mechanisms of its daytime formation is not fully understood. This study investigates the role of formic acid (HCOOH), a prevalent electron and proton donor, in the transformation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and the formation of HONO on photoactive mineral dust. Exploiting hematite (Fe2O3) as an environmental indicator, we demonstrate that HCOOH significantly promotes the photoreduction of NO2 to HONO, while su

Decoupling nitrous oxide emissions from carbon footprint in full-scale completely autotrophic nitrogen removal over nitrite process: key drivers and sustainability assessment.

While the partial nitrification/anammox-based completely autotrophic nitrogen removal over nitrite (CANON) process offers substantial advantages for treating high-ammonium wastewater, significant nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions pose a challenge to its low-carbon sustainability. In this study, long-term field sampling and stable isotope analysis were conducted in a full-scale CANON process to evaluate N2O dynamics and the contributions of different pathways, as well as to perform a scenario-based carbon footprint assessment. The results showed that N2O emissions were low when hydroxylamine oxidat

Long-term microbial community dynamics at two full-scale biotrickling filters treating pig house exhaust air.

In this study, the microbial community structure of two full-scale biotrickling filters treating exhaust air from a pig housing facility were evaluated using 16S metabarcoding. The effect of inoculation with activated sludge of a nearby domestic waste water treatment plant was investigated, which is a cheap procedure and easy to apply in practice. The study was performed at a three-stage and a two-stage full-scale biotrickling filter; of which, only the latter was inoculated. Both biotrickling filters evolved towards a rather similar community over time, which differed from the one in the acti

The binding sites of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and xenon reveal a putative exhaust channel for bovine cytochrome c oxidase.

Cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) catalyzes oxygen (O2) reduction at the heme a3-CuB site in the transmembrane region of the enzyme. It has been proposed that the hydrophobic channel that connects the transmembrane surface of subunit III through subunit I to the heme a3-CuB site is the O2 transfer pathway. Gas molecules other than O2, including carbon dioxide (CO2) generated in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, should also enter the hydrophobic channel, but it is not clear how these molecules are expelled from CcO. We analyzed the crystal structures of CO2-, nitrous oxide-, and Xe-bound bovine CcO in the

Evaluation of complexed NO reduction mechanism in a chemical absorption-biological reduction integrated NO(x) removal system.

Biological reduction of nitric oxide (NO) from Fe(II) ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-NO to dinitrogen (N(2)) is a core process for the continual nitrogen oxides (NO(x)) removal in the chemical absorption-biological reduction integrated approach. To explore the biological reduction of Fe(II)EDTA-NO, the stoichiometry and mechanism of Fe(II)EDTA-NO reduction with glucose or Fe(II)EDTA as electron donor were investigated. The experimental results indicate that the main product of complexed NO reduction is N(2), as there was no accumulation of nitrous oxide, ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate af

Halobacterium denitrificans sp. nov., an extremely halophilic denitrifying bacterium.

Halobacterium denitrificans was one of several carbohydrate-utilizing, denitrifying, extremely halophilic bacteria isolated by anaerobic enrichment in the presence of nitrate. Anaerobic growth took place only when nitrate (or nitrite) was present and was accompanied by the production of dinitrogen. In the presence of high concentrations of nitrate (i.e., 0.5%), nitrous oxide and nitrite were also detected. When grown aerobically in a mineral-salts medium containing 0.005% yeast extract, H. denitrificans utilized a variety of carbohydrates as sources of carbon and energy. In every case, carbohy

The advantage of a two-stage nitrification method for fertilizer recovery from human urine.

Recycling nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) from human urine can potentially offset more than 13% of global agricultural fertilizer demand. Biological nitrification is a promising method for converting volatile ammonia in high-strength human urine into stable ammonium nitrate (a typical fertilizer), but it is usually terminated in the intermediate production of nitrite due to the inhibition of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria by free nitrous acid (FNA). This study aimed to develop a stable nitrification process in a unique two-stage bioreactor by removing critical barriers associated w

A modeling study of the impact of photolysis on indoor air quality.

The importance of photolysis as an initiator of air chemistry outdoors is widely recognized, but its role in chemical processing indoors is often ignored. This paper uses recent experimental data to modify a detailed chemical model, using it to investigate the impacts of glass type, artificial indoor lighting, cloudiness, time of year and latitude on indoor photolysis rates and hence indoor air chemistry. Switching from an LED to an uncovered fluorescent tube light increased predicted indoor hydroxyl radical concentrations by ~13%. However, moving from glass that transmitted outdoor light at w

Speciation and chemical evolution of nitrogen oxides in aircraft exhaust near airports.

Measurements of nitrogen oxides from a variety of commercial aircraft engines as part of the JETS-APEX2 and APEX3 campaigns show that NOx (NOx [triple bond] NO + NO2) is emitted primarily in the form of NO2 at idle thrust and NO at high thrust. A chemical kinetics combustion model reproduces the observed NO2 and NOx trends with engine power and sheds light on the relevant chemical mechanisms. Experimental evidence is presented of rapid conversion of NO to NO2 in the exhaust plume from engines at low thrust. The rapid conversion and the high NO2/NOx emission ratios observed are unrelated to ozo

Changes in the atmospheric deposition of acidifying compounds in the UK between 1986 and 2001.

Emissions of a precursor of acidity in precipitation, sulphur dioxide (SO2), declined in the UK and the EU (15) by 71% and 72%, respectively, between 1986 and 2001, while nitrous oxide emissions declined by about 40%. Acidity in UK precipitation and the deposition of sulphate in precipitation halved during this period, but reductions were larger in the English Midlands than at the west coast and in high rainfall areas (>2000 mm). There is evidence that the smaller reductions in sulphur deposition in the west and south are due in part to shipping sources of SO2. Reductions in sulphur dry deposi

A 3H-labelled trisaccharide from heparin as substrate for acetyl-CoA: 2-amino-2-deoxy-alpha-D-glucoside N-acetyltransferase.

The tetrasaccharide fraction obtained by gel chromatography after treatment of commercially available heparin with nitrous acid was reduced with NaB3H4 and then hydrolysed with 2M trifluoracetic acid at 70 degrees for 3 days. By gel chromatography and electrophoresis, the 3H-labelled trisaccharide 1 bearing and unsubstituted 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-glucosyl group in the non-reducing position was obtained (18% from the 3H-labelled tetrasaccharide). By sequential, enzymic degradation, the structure alpha-D-GlcN-(1 leads to 4)-beta-D-GlcA-(1 leads to 4)-[1-3H]aManol was obtained for 1, which is a subst

Potential biological chemistry of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) with the nitrogen oxides.

Hydrogen sulfide, an important gaseous signaling agent generated in numerous biological tissues, influences many physiological processes. This biological profile seems reminiscent of nitric oxide, another important endogenously synthesized gaseous signaling molecule. Hydrogen sulfide reacts with nitric oxide or oxidized forms of nitric oxide and nitric oxide donors in vitro to form species that display distinct biology compared to both hydrogen sulfide and NO. The products of these interesting reactions may include small-molecule S-nitrosothiols or nitroxyl, the one-electron-reduced form of ni

The contributions of James Carmichael Smyth, Archibald Menzies and Robert Jackson to the treatment of typhus in royal naval vessels in the late 18th century.

In late 18th century Britain, typhus fever plagued the mass mobilisation of soldiers and posed a significant challenge to physicians of the time. Epidemic typhus was spread through highly infectious faeces of infected lice and carried a high mortality in patients and healthcare staff alike. Physicians James Carmichael Smyth (1741-1821) and Archibald Menzies (1754-1842) theorized that typhus fever was caused by infection of human exhalation. They trialled the use of vapourised nitrous acid to fumigate patients, their clothes and their bedspace, with apparent success. Despite this, typhus fever

Apples increase nitric oxide production by human saliva at the acidic pH of the stomach: a new biological function for polyphenols with a catechol group?

Dietary inorganic nitrate is secreted in saliva and reduced to nitrite by bacterial flora. At the acidic pH of the stomach nitrite is present as nitrous acid in equilibrium with nitric oxide (*NO), and other nitrogen oxides with nitrating and nitrosating activity. *NO in the stomach exerts several beneficial effects, but nitrosating/nitrating species have been implicated as a possible cause of epithelial neoplasia at the gastroesophageal junction. We investigated the effects of apple extracts on *NO release by human saliva at pH 2. A water extract obtained from apple homogenate increased *NO r
