[Efficacy of intranasal desmopressin in the treatment of nocturia due to nocturnal polyuria].

Older adults often cite nocturia as one of the most bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). We investigated the efficacy and safety of intranasal desmopressin in the treatment of nocturia due to nocturnal polyuria on 12 patients (ten men, two women) ranging in age from 53 to 77 years (mean 67 years). All patients experienced more than two episodes of nocturia per night, and had a nocturnal urine volume greater than 35% of the daily voided volume, measured using a 3-day voiding diary with a frequency-volume chart. They began taking intranasal desmopressin (10 microg) at bedtime. When co

Clinical observations of the effect of antidiuretic hormone on nocturia in elderly men.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of desmopressin on nocturia, based on patients' subjective scoring of nocturia, as desmopressin is widely used to treat nocturnal enuresis and nocturnal polyuria. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We investigated a specific subgroup of 28 men with benign prostate obstruction and nocturia who were treated with desmopressin. Patients with nocturnal polyuria were excluded. All the patients were refractory to treatment with antimuscarinics or anticholinergics, e.g. oxybutynin, tolterodine, and propantheline bromide. We assessed the effect of desmopressin using a quantitative

Human atrial natriuretic peptide is a useful criterion in treatment of nocturia.

BACKGROUND: Nocturia is one of the major problems of elderly people. The possible causes of nocturia include irritation of lower urinary tract obstruction, disturbance of the fluid balance, and sleep disturbance. In a significant proportion of patients, the mechanism of nocturia is still unclear and a definitive method of treatment has yet to be determined. This study investigated how to treat nocturia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed 51 patients who visited Kobe City General Hospital between January 1998 and June 1999 with nocturia (three or more nocturnal voidings) and no daytime urologi

Nocturia, nocturia indices and variables from frequency-volume charts are significantly different in Asian and Caucasian men with lower urinary tract symptoms: a prospective comparison study.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and compare the patterns of nocturia in Asian and Caucasian men presenting with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), and to identify associations or correlations between LUTS and variables from a frequency-volume chart (FVC), as nocturia is common among men with LUTS, and analysis of FVCs shows nocturnal polyuria and reduced nocturnal bladder capacity (NBC) as the predominant causes in Western patients, but there are few comparisons with other ethnic groups. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Consecutive men aged > or = 40 years, presenting with LUTS and nocturia to an Asian and a C

Research Progress on the Precise Classification and Individualized Diagnosis and Treatment of Nocturia.

BACKGROUND: Nocturia is a common urological symptom whose prevalence increases progressively with age. It not only impairs sleep and quality of life but also increases the risk of adverse events, including falls and fractures. Clinical management remains limited by inadequate evaluation of underlying etiologies, imprecise phenotyping, and suboptimal therapeutic responses. SUMMARY: To facilitate standardized diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, we reviewed and summarized relevant literature published over the past decade. Focusing on four major subtypes, nocturnal polyuria (NP), diminished b

Prevalence of Sleep CALM nocturia factors in a male veteran population.

INTRODUCTION: Nocturia is a complex and multifactorial condition, associated with several genitourinary abnormalities as well as a host of conditions beyond the urinary tract, and thus often poses a significant diagnostic challenge in real-world practice. Sleep Disorders, Comorbidities, Actions, Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction, and Medications, the so-called "Sleep C.A.L.M." factors, are five common causes of nocturia requiring judicious evaluation according to current consensus guidelines. This study aims to assess the prevalence of the Sleep C.A.L.M. factors in a nocturia clinical population

Bladder sensations in women with nocturia due to overactive bladder syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Nocturia is the number of times urine is passed during main sleep. This definition tells us that it is a need to void; it does not tell us what triggers it. The aim of this study is to report bladder sensations that wake up women with nocturia (N). Descriptions of sensations in relation to various overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms, most bothersome symptoms, urinary incontinence (UI) and urodynamic findings are examined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study of women > 18 years old presenting with OAB and nocturia. Data collected included presenting and most bothersome symptom
