[Combined verbal and sign language for promoting communication development in non-verbal or or pre-verbal children and adolescents with mental retardation].

Conveying alternative and augmentative approaches to communication is becoming necessary for increasing numbers of persons with mental retardation with no or poor oral skills. The preverbal and nonverbal forms of communicating, hence, have special relevance in a developmental context. A natural extension of gestic messages, it in particular is the use of signing that is apt to enhance speech and language acquisition and bring about distinct improvement in understanding and making oneself understood. Exchanging messages by sign language can reveal to the child the significance of his/her own be

Training communication skills in a multiuser medical virtual reality simulation: a qualitative, observational study.

BACKGROUND: Simulation-based education is a well-established training technique in medical curricula, also for communication skills. Virtual reality (VR) technology can enhance this form of experience-based learning. How VR interacts with training communication skills for interpersonal and interprofessional medical encounters is, however, unclear. This study investigates how VR influences communication skills and behaviors in patient-student and team encounters in medical undergraduate simulations, in order to make recommendations for VR simulation-based communication skills training (CST). [Intercultural Communication with Patients in Hospital Settings - From Misunderstanding to Mutual Understanding].

Culturally diverse constellations in European hospital settings have become increasingly common, giving rise to communication challenges that affect both patient safety and the quality of care. This article examines the key dimensions of intercultural communication between physicians and patients, with particular focus on verbal and nonverbal communication, direct versus indirect communication styles, and the types of conflict that frequently arise in multicultural clinical environments. Drawing on established frameworks - including Watzlawick's communication theory and Hofstede's cultural dim

The SimCom-Method: Impact of Simulated Communication Teaching in Pediatric Resuscitation Scenarios.

OBJECTIVE: Effective communication when breaking bad news to families is crucial, yet it is often lacking. This study evaluates the efficacy of a communication teaching session via simulation to improve the quality of breaking difficult news in a pediatric resuscitation setting. METHODS: This was a prospective randomized controlled trial at the Medical University of Vienna. Participants undergoing a pediatric high-fidelity resuscitation simulation resulting in the death of a 6-year-old patient were tasked with delivering the death notice to simulation parents. These conversations were video r

Case Report: Nonverbal approaches in the treatment of a patient with fibromyalgia with anger rooted in adverse childhood experiences.

INTRODUCTION: In psychotherapy, it is important to establish and deepen a therapeutic trusting relationship, but patients who have experienced extreme adversity in childhood tend to have difficulty in building such a relationship. This paper reports a case of fibromyalgia with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in which a nonverbal approach was successful in building a trusting relationship. CASE AND METHODS: The patient is a woman in her late 40s. She had strong anger rooted in ACEs, including neglect by her father, a feeling of unfair parenting by her mother compared to her younger brothe

Comparison of Prototype Transparent Mask, Opaque Mask, and No Mask on Speech Understanding in Noise.

Background: Face masks are used in healthcare for the prevention of the spread of disease; however, the recent COVID-19 pandemic raised awareness of the challenges of typical opaque masks that obscure nonverbal cues. In addition, various masks have been shown to attenuate speech above 1000 Hz, and lack of nonverbal cues exacerbates speech understanding in the presence of background noise. Transparent masks can help to overcome the loss of nonverbal cues, but they have greater attenuative effects on higher speech frequencies. This study evaluated a newer prototype transparent face mask redesign

Effects of a dyadic music therapy intervention on parent-child interaction, parent stress, and parent-child relationship in families with emotionally neglected children: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Work with families and families at risk within the field of music therapy have been developing for the last decade. To diminish risk for unhealthy child development, families with emotionally neglected children need help to improve their emotional communication and develop healthy parent-child interactions. While some researchers have investigated the effect of music therapy on either the parent or the child, no study has investigated the effect of music therapy on the observed interaction between the parent and child within the field of child protection. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of

Using non-verbal communication to support de-escalation in patients experiencing acute psychosis in the emergency department.

Emergency nurses are frequently the first point of contact for patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with the symptoms of acute psychosis. Altered perception, fear and disorganised thinking can impair communication and precipitate distress, which may lead to agitation or aggressive behaviour, placing patients and staff at increased risk of harm. In these circumstances, verbal reasoning alone may be ineffective. Evidence indicates that non-verbal communication, such as body posture, eye-level alignment, proximity and tone of voice, can have a pivotal role in these situations by p

Emotional expression in psychiatric conditions: New technology for clinicians.

AIM: Emotional expressions are one of the most widely studied topics in neuroscience, from both clinical and non-clinical perspectives. Atypical emotional expressions are seen in various psychiatric conditions, including schizophrenia, depression, and autism spectrum conditions. Understanding the basics of emotional expressions and recognition can be crucial for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Emotions can be expressed in the face, gesture, posture, voice, and behavior and affect physiological parameters, such as the heart rate or body temperature. With modern technology, clinicians can

Signal characteristics of spontaneous facial expressions: automatic movement in solitary and social smiles.

The assumption that the smile is an evolved facial display suggests that there may be universal features of smiling in addition to the basic facial configuration. We show that smiles include not only a stable configuration of features, but also temporally consistent movement patterns. In spontaneous smiles from two social contexts, duration of lip corner movement during the onset phase was independent of social context and the presence of other facial movements, including dampening. These additional movements produced variation in both peak and offset duration. Both onsets and offsets had dyna

The ability of children with specific language impairment to access and participate in an ongoing interaction.

This study investigated the ability of 6 children with specific language impairment (SLI), ages 8;10 to 12;5 (years; months), to enter and participate in an ongoing dyadic interaction. Performance was compared to that of 6 chronological age-matched (CA) peers and 6 language-similar (LS) peers. All children in the LS and CA groups successfully accessed the interaction, and most did so quickly. Two children from the SLI group did not access, and the 4 remaining subjects required varying amounts of time to access. Following successful access, the triadic interactions of subjects were examined. Th

[Metacommunication in waking and hypnotic states].

A definition is given of the terms "communication" and "metacommunication", "language" and "metalanguage", and the several types of relationships that may arise in communication: "symmetrical competitive", "integrative complementary", "metacomplementary", and "paradoxical", Reference is made to the "spontaneity" and "simulation" that may arise in communication and metacommunication, during both wakefulness, conscious states in barbituric subnarcosis, and hypnosis. The question of metacommunication during the induction of hypnosis and during the hypnotic relationship is examined, stress being p

Clinical and anatomic findings in a case of auditory agnosia.

A case is reported of severe agnosia for verbal and nonverbal sounds in a setting of well-preserved intelligence and transient dysphasic symptoms. The lesions responsible for this disorder were bilateral cerebral infarcts, one of which had virtually destroyed the areas of Wernicke and Broca. The relation between lesions and disabilities is discussed and comparisons made with other published cases.

The importance of human odour in non-verbal communication.

Approximately one-third of the human subjects could identify their own odour and that of their partner among 10 subjects. Nearly 50% consistently identified their own odour, or that of their partner, incorrectly. One-third of the subjects were capable of distinguishing between male and femal odour. Asked to attach the attributes 'pleasant', 'indifferent' or 'unpleasant' to several odour, the subjects judged femal odours more often pleasant and less often unpleasant than male odours. Women judged their own odours more often pleasant and less than unpleasant, men on the contrary their own odours
