BACKGROUND: The Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami of March 11, 2011 severely damaged a widespread region of northeastern Japan. Consequently, the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant experienced a level seven 3 reactors melted down, which released a large amount of radioactive materials into the air. Due to the structural damage and radiation leaks, the victims are facing prolonged psychological distress.
METHODS: Eighty-two subjects with mental disorders who made their initial visit during the first 4 months after the earthquake and one hundred and ninety-four subjects with mental

The averted cumulative lifetime attributable risk (LAR), the residual dose and highest ground deposition of 137Cs complying with a reference dose level of 20 mSv yr-1 to an individual returning after one year to an area contaminated by unfiltered releases of fission products from a nuclear power plant (NPP) were evaluated by applying an existing exposure model designed to compute age- and gender-dependent time-integrated LAR. The model was applied to four types of nuclear fallout scenarios, partly based on data from the Chernobyl and Fukushima releases and from theoretical source terms from Sw

Following the Fukushima incident, radiation doses from external exposure accounted for the majority of the total doses. Although countermeasures are being implemented, with the aim of reducing radiation exposure, little information is available on the effects of decontamination on individual doses among the residents of radioactively contaminated areas. To evaluate the effectiveness of the decontamination measures in reducing individual doses, and to examine the influence of the timing of decontamination and the district, data were analysed for 18 392 adults and 3 650 children in Minamisoma Ci

BACKGROUND: After a disaster, it is essential to maintain the health care supply levels to minimize the health impact on vulnerable populations. During the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, hospitals within a 20 km radius were forced to make an immediate evacuation, causing a wide range of short- and long-term health problems. However, there is limited information on how the disaster disrupted the continuity of health care for hospitalized patients in the acute phase of the disaster.

After the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident, the air dose gradually decreases every year due to the physical decay of radioactive materials and environmental changes, as well as countermeasures. However, there is little information on personal behavioural patterns and individual dose from external exposure among the inhabitants around the nuclear power plant. To evaluate the dose from external exposure in Minamisoma city, and compare the differences with outside Fukushima Prefecture, we started the external dose assessment project in cooperation with city officials in Minamisoma a

PURPOSE: Ionizing radiation is being regarded as life threatening. Therefore, accidents in nuclear power plants are considered equal threatening as nuclear bomb explosions, and attacks with dirty bombs are thought as dangerous as nuclear weapon explosions. However, there are differences between a nuclear bomb explosion, the largest imaginable accident in a nuclear power plant, and an attack with a dirty bomb. It is intended to point them out.
METHOD: The processes are described, which damage in a nuclear bomb explosion, in the largest imaginable accident in a nuclear power plant, and in an at

In 2008, the Kinderkrebs in der Umgebung von Kernkraftwerken (KiKK) study in Germany reported a 60% increase in solid cancers and a 120% increase in leukemias among children living within 5 km of all German nuclear power stations. The study has triggered debates as to the cause(s) of these increased cancers. This article reports on the findings of the KiKK study; discusses past and more recent epidemiological studies of leukemias near nuclear installations around the world, and outlines a possible biological mechanism to explain the increased cancers. This suggests that the observed high rates

Starting in 1970, this article studies how Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was built. It follows the station's operational history until 1982. During that year, reactor block one suffered a torn reactor channel, four years prior to the well-known catastrophe of 1986. It uncovers the genesis of these accidents by analyzing everyday history at the construction site. Construction relied on long established tools and processes, tried out at large-scale and mostly non-nuclear development areas. Masons, carpenters, and welders dealt with planned quotas and deadlines, material and personnel shortages,

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies of radiation-exposed populations form the basis for human safety standards. They also help shape public health policy and evidence-based health practices by identifying and quantifying health risks of exposure in defined populations. For more than a century, epidemiologists have studied the consequences of radiation exposures, yet the health effects of low levels delivered at a low-dose rate remain equivocal.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Million Person Study (MPS) of U.S. Radiation Workers and Veterans was designed to examine health effects following chronic ex

Large-scale radiation accidents are few in number, but those that have occurred have subsequently led to strict regulation in most countries. Here, different accident scenarios involving exposure to radiation have been reviewed. A triage of injured persons has been summarized and guidance on management has been provided in accordance with the early symptoms. Types of casualty to be expected in atomic blasts have been discussed. Management at the scene of an accident has been described, with explanation of the role of the radiation protection officer, the nature of contaminants, and monitoring

Researchers have attempted to link incidences of papillary thyroid cancer with radioiodine releases from nuclear power plants. Thyroid cancer detection rates are examined together with overall population exposure to ionizing radiation and actual radioiodine releases from the Indian Point Energy Center to determine if a causal relationship exists. A critical review of the statistical analyses used in previous papers is then presented.

This paper does not necessarily reflect the views of the International Commission on Radiological Protection. What is at stake? It was one of the most frequently asked questions in a series of fora with concerned parties on the rehabilitation of living conditions in the aftermath of the accident at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. It was obvious that radioactive contamination was the source of the problem, and people were at a loss over how to cope with the situation. Various measures were taken under such circumstances, including detailed radiation monitoring, a decontamination programme

The safe management of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) presents an important obstacle to the sustainability of global nuclear energy initiatives. Although dry storage casks (DSCs) as HI STORM, TN 32, NAC MPC, and Doosan systems have exhibited strong performance in temperate climates, their long-term durability in arid, salty, and seismically active conditions is still inadequately investigated. This study establishes a comprehensive methodology to assess DSC technologies in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where four APR1400 reactors at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant provide distinct storage issues.

Disasters have a wide range of effects on society. Nuclear disasters require a multifaceted response that considers the direct health effects of radiation exposure and indirect health consequences associated with evacuation. In recent years, the development and evaluation of practical nuclear disaster preparedness measures have become critical challenges for regions hosting nuclear power plants due to the growing risk of increasingly complex natural hazards. This study aimed to clarify the operational challenges of radiation-shielded shelter facilities used for sheltering during disasters by i
