Examining the potential for detecting simultaneous noble gas and aerosol samples in the international monitoring system radionuclide network.

The purpose of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) is to establish a legally binding ban on nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions. The Preparatory Commission for the CTBT Organization (CTBTO PrepCom) is developing the International Monitoring System (IMS) that includes a global network of 80 stations to monitor for airborne radionuclides upon entry into force of the CTBT. All 80 radionuclide stations will monitor for particulate radionuclides and at least half of the stations will monitor for radioxenon. The airborne radionuclide monitoring is an important

NEW DEVELOPMENTS AND APPLICATIONS OF SUPERHEATED EMULSIONS: WARHEAD VERIFICATION AND SPECIAL NUCLEAR MATERIAL INTERDICTION.

In recent years, neutron detection with superheated emulsions has received renewed attention thanks to improved detector manufacturing and read-out techniques, and thanks to successful applications in warhead verification and special nuclear material (SNM) interdiction. Detectors are currently manufactured with methods allowing high uniformity of the drop sizes, which in turn allows the use of optical read-out techniques based on dynamic light scattering. Small detector cartridges arranged in 2D matrices are developed for the verification of a declared warhead without revealing its design. For

Oxidative Stress: An Intersection Between Radiation and Sulfur Mustard Lung Injury.

Nuclear and chemical weapons of mass destruction share both a tragic and beneficial legacy in mankind's history and health. The horrific health effects of ionizing radiation and mustard gas exposures unleashed during disasters, wars, and conflicts have been harnessed to treat human health maladies. Both agents of destruction have been transformed into therapies to treat a wide range of cancers. The discovery of therapeutic uses of radiation and sulfur mustard was largely due to observations by clinicians treating victims of radiation and sulfur mustard gas exposures. Clinicians identified vuln

137Cs Lake Sediment Depth Profiles and Inventories Within Four Lakes of Idaho's Sawtooth Wilderness.

A total of 68 sediment cores from four freshwater alpine lakes in Idaho's Sawtooth Wilderness were collected during the summer of 2017. The objectives of the study were to determine depth distributions of Cs in the cores using gamma spectrometry and to estimate the sedimentation rates of the lakes from the identified geochronological peaks linked to nuclear fallout. The Cs radioactivity above reference-area values was detected in all studied lakes. The maximum Cs concentrations measured in each lake's sediment ranged from 74.0 ± 6.09 to 255 ± 7.48 Bq kg. Factors such as elevation, latitude, an

Inhibited Cr(VI) reduction by aqueous Fe(II) under hyperalkaline conditions.

This study investigated Cr(VI) reduction by dissolved Fe(II) in hyperalkaline pH conditions as found in fluid wastes associated with the U.S. nuclear weapons program. The results show that Cr(VI) reduction by Fe(II) at alkaline pH solutions proceeds very quickly. The amount of Cr(VI) removed from solution and the amount reduced increases with Fe(II):Cr(VI) ratio. However, the Cr(VI) reduction under alkaline pH condition is nonstoichiometric, probably due to Fe(II) precipitation and mixed iron(III)-chromium-(III) (oxy)hydroxides blocking Fe(II) surface sites, as well as removing Fe(II) from sol

Understanding how deployment experiences change over time: Comparison of female and male OEF/OIF and Gulf War veterans.

Despite increased attention to the evolving nature of war, the unique challenges of contemporary deployment, and women's changing role in warfare, few studies have examined differences in deployment stressors across eras of service or evaluated how gender differences in deployment experiences have changed over time. Using data collected from two national survey studies, we examined war cohort and gender differences in veterans' reports of both mission-related and interpersonal stressors during deployment. Although Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans reported more co

Past exposure to densely ionizing radiation leaves a unique permanent signature in the genome.

Speculation has long surrounded the question of whether past exposure to ionizing radiation leaves a unique permanent signature in the genome. Intrachromosomal rearrangements or deletions are produced much more efficiently by densely ionizing radiation than by chemical mutagens, x-rays, or endogenous aging processes. Until recently, such stable intrachromosomal aberrations have been very hard to detect, but a new chromosome band painting technique has made their detection practical. We report the detection and quantification of stable intrachromosomal aberrations in lymphocytes of healthy form

Epidemiology of beryllium sensitization and disease in nuclear workers.

We examined the epidemiology of chronic beryllium disease among a stratified, random sample (n = 895) of nuclear weapons workers using the blood beryllium lymphocyte transformation (BeLT) test and chest radiograph for case identification. Of 18 new cases of beryllium sensitization, 12 had beryllium disease, and three more developed pulmonary granulomas on lung biopsy over the succeeding 2 yr. Beryllium-sensitized cases did not differ from noncases in age, gender, race, ethnicity, smoking, most respiratory symptoms, spirometric or radiographic abnormalities, or job tenure. The six sensitized ca

Radiation combined injury: overview of NIAID research.

The term "radiation combined injury" (RCI) is used to describe conditions where radiation injury is coupled with other insults such as burns, wounds, infection, or blunt trauma. A retrospective account of injuries sustained following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima estimates that RCI comprised approximately 65% of all injuries observed. Much of the research that has been performed on RCI was carried out during the Cold War and our understanding of the clinical problem RCI presents does not reflect the latest advances in medicine or science. Because concerns have increased that terrorists might

Screening for beryllium disease among construction trade workers at Department of Energy nuclear sites.

BACKGROUND: To determine whether current and former construction workers are at significant risk for occupational illnesses from work at the Department of Energy's (DOE) nuclear weapons facilities, screening programs were undertaken at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, Oak Ridge Reservation, and the Savannah River Site. METHODS: Medical examination for beryllium disease used a medical history and a beryllium blood lymphocyte proliferation test (BeLPT). Stratified and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to explore the risk of disease by age, race, sex, trade, duration of DOE emp

Beyond dose assessment: using risk with full disclosure of uncertainty in public and scientific communication.

Evaluations of radiation exposures of workers and the public traditionally focus on assessments of radiation dose, especially annual dose, without explicitly evaluating the health risk associated with those exposures, principally the risk of radiation-induced cancer. When dose is the endpoint of an assessment, opportunities to communicate the significance of exposures are limited to comparisons with dose criteria in regulations, doses due to natural background or medical x-rays, and doses above which a statistically significant increase of disease has been observed in epidemiologic studies. [Complex cytogenetic characteristic of people suffered from Chernobyl accident].

A cytogenetic study was performed on Chernobyl cleanup workers, on their children, on persons evacuated from contaminated aeria (adult and children), on so named "veterans of particular risk" irradiated due to the accidents on the nuclear plant, testing of nuclear weapons etc. and on control donors. The yield of stable (FISH analysis) and of unstable chromosome aberrations, micronuclei in both lymphocytes and erythrocytes, HPRT mutations was found to be increased in exposed groups as compared to control ones. In children of liquidators and in evacuated children we observed genomic instability

Radiation risk estimation in human populations: lessons from the radiological accident in Brazil.

The development of radiological and nuclear technologies and the deployment of nuclear weapons have made ionizing radiation one of the most studied human mutagens. Exposure to ionizing radiation produces DNA damage which can result in mutation and cancer, making the risk associated with human exposure a critical issue. In this paper we estimate the risk associated with radiation exposure for individuals exposed to 137Cs during the 1987 Goiânia radiological accident. Using combined regression slopes from both the in vivo hprt mutant frequency and micronucleus frequency data we estimated a doubl

Is familicide a distinct subtype of mass murder? Evidence from a Swiss national cohort.

BACKGROUND: Familicide is defined as the killing of a whole family and, numerically, a form of "mass murder" (more-or-less three simultaneous killings). Switzerland has a lower rate of homicide than most other countries but a comparatively high share of homicides within the family. AIM: The aim of this study is to describe a complete national sample of familicides and compare them with other types of mass murders in the country over the same period. METHODS: All cases of three or more unlawful homicides in one event in Switzerland between 1972 and 2015 were identified from court records and

Medical management of victims contaminated with radionuclides after a "dirty bomb" attack.

A wide spectrum of scenarios may lead to radiation incidents and the liberation of radioactive material. In the case of a terrorist attack by a "dirty bomb", there is a risk of mechanical and thermal trauma, external irradiation, superficial contamination and incorporation of radioactive material. The first treatment priority must be given to the care of trauma patients with life-threatening injuries, as the health effects of radiation occur with latency. Radionuclide incorporation will lead to a longer-lasting irradiation from inside the body, associated with a higher risk of stochastic radia

Fetal death and congenital malformation in babies born to nuclear industry employees: report from the nuclear industry family study.

BACKGROUND: There is some concern about the genetic effects of exposure to low-level ionising radiation, but the evidence is sparse and conflicting. Most work has concentrated on cancer in offspring and little has been done on adverse reproductive outcome. We aimed to assess whether the offspring of men and women who are occupationally exposed to ionising radiation are at increased risk of fetal death and congenital malformation. METHODS: We analysed pregnancies reported by an occupational cohort of nuclear industry workers in the UK, employed at establishments operated by the Atomic Energy A

Biomaterials for the decorporation of (85)Sr in the rat.

Although four stable isotopes of strontium occur naturally, Sr is produced by nuclear fission and is present in surface soil around the world as a result of fallout from atmospheric nuclear weapons tests. It can easily transfer to humans in the event of a nuclear/radiological emergency or through the plant-animal-human food chain causing long-term exposures. Strontium is chemically and biologically similar to calcium, and is incorporated primarily into bone following internal deposition. Alginic acid (alginate) obtained from seaweed (kelp) extract selectively binds ingested strontium in the ga

Assessing the Relative Biological Effectiveness of Neutrons across Organs of Varying Depth among the Atomic Bomb Survivors.

When assessing radiation-related risk among the atomic bomb survivors, choices in modeling approach can have an important impact on the results, which are then used to inform radiation protection standards throughout the world. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki produced a mixed-field radiation exposure from two sources: neutrons and gamma rays. Neutrons are more densely ionizing and cause greater biological damage per unit absorbed dose, resulting in greater relative biological effectiveness (RBE) than gamma rays. To account for this, a combined weighted dose is typically calculate

Exposure to ionizing radiation in adulthood and thyroid cancer incidence.

BACKGROUND: Recent reviews of the radiation epidemiology literature have concluded that there is little evidence that exposure to ionizing radiation in adulthood causes thyroid cancer. This paper examines the association between radiation dose and thyroid cancer incidence among Japanese survivors who were adults at the time of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. METHODS: Analyses were conducted using data on cancer incidence during the period 1958-1998 among 59,687 members of the Life Span Study of atomic bomb survivors who were 20 years or older at time of bombings of Hiroshima an
