BACKGROUND: Curcumin is a multi-functional polyphenol with anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effects and may have potential for treatment of periodontal diseases. The present study was conducted to examine the molecular basis of the anti-bacterial effect of curcumin against Porphyromonas gingivalis using metabolome analysis.

We previously characterized two cDNAs that encode for distinct preprosomatostatin molecules containing [Tyr(7), Gly(10)]-somatostatin-14 at their C-termini (PPSS II' and PPSS II") and found that these cDNAs were differentially expressed in the endocrine pancreas (Brockmann body) of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. In this study, we examined the control of PPSSII' mRNA and PPSS II" mRNA expression by glucose. Fish injected with glucose displayed elevated plasma levels of glucose in association with nearly three-fold higher levels of PPSS II mRNAs compared to saline-injected control animals.

BACKGROUND: Nonsurgical treatment of recalcitrant pediatric esophageal strictures is challenging. Oral rifaximin, a semisynthetic rifamycin derivative, is an effective and well tolerated antibacterial for the management of adults with non-invasive traveller's diarrhoea. A prospective study was carried out to assess the recurrence rate of pterygium with conjunctival autograft versus the use of topical mitomycin C. In 27 eyes undergoing pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft, the recurrence rate was found to be 25.9% after 1 year mean follow-up. In the second group of 32 eyes, pterygium was removed using the bare sclera method. All these patients received post-operatively 0.2 mg/ml (0.02%) topical mitomycin C twice a day for 5 days. The article presents ultrasonic characterization of hemophilic synovitis in 73 hemophilia patients. The technology of performing rifampicin synoviortesis under ultrasonic control has been developed, ensuring the exact fulfilling intraarticular punctures taking into account the alterations in the intraarticular structures and optimization of filling the articular cavity with sclerosant.
