Knowledge and skills of neonatal resuscitation of health professionals at a university teaching hospital of Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Competency in neonatal resuscitation is critical in the delivery rooms, neonatology units and pediatrics intensive care units to ensure the safety and health of neonates. Each year, millions of babies do not breathe immediately at birth, and among them the majority require basic neonatal resuscitation. Perinatal asphyxia is a major contributor to neonatal deaths worldwide in resource-limited settings. Neonatal resuscitation is effective only when health professionals have sufficient knowledge and skills. But malpractices by health professionals are frequent in the resuscitation of

Comparison of outcomes at 6 weeks following postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device insertions by doctors and nurses in India: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: As part of a strategy to revitalize postpartum family planning services, Government of India revised its policy in 2013 to permit trained nurses and midwives to insert postpartum intrauterine contraceptive devices (PPIUCDs). This study compares two key outcomes of PPIUCD insertions--expulsion and infection--for physicians and nurses/midwives to generate evidence for task sharing. STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed secondary data from the PPIUCD program in seven states using a case-control study design. We included facilities where both doctors and nurses/midwives performed PPIUCD insertions

Testing of midwife neonatal resuscitation skills with a simulator manikin in a low-risk delivery unit.

BACKGROUND: Expertise in neonatal resuscitation is essential for personnel involved in the care of newborns. In this observational cohort study the skills of 52 midwives in a simulated scenario were assessed. METHODS: A total of 52 midwives in a low-risk unit and five specialist nurses in a high-risk unit were tested to establish their competence in newborn resuscitation. The 52 midwives were divided into groups 1 (n = 39; no pretest training) and 2 (n = 13; 1 day training prior to study). The video-recorded test scenario was a newborn with asphyxia. Thirty items were graded by a neonatologis

Role of nursing and midwifery in mainstreaming genomics in Australia: mixed-methods study exploring scope of practice and strategies for implementation.

BACKGROUND: The integration of genomics into Australian health services offers significant benefits for the diagnosis and delivery of targeted treatments, but its success relies on a workforce equipped to deliver genomic-informed care. Nurses and midwives, Australia's largest healthcare workforce, have the potential to play a key role in the integration of genomic care into mainstream services by enabling access to the diverse and geographically spread Australian population. To achieve this, it is imperative to clearly define their roles in genomic practice and identify specific educational an

Supportive nurse-midwife care is associated with a reduced incidence of cesarean section.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to examine whether care by a certified nurse-midwife, including personal labor support, was associated with a reduced risk of cesarean delivery. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study comparing 3551 physician-managed patients with 1056 certified nurse-midwife-managed patients in a university hospital with a mixed socioeconomic and ethnic population was performed. Regression analysis was used to estimate the risk of labor abnormalities, diagnosis of fetal distress, and cesarean delivery in patients delivered by a certified nurse-midwife vs a physician and to cont

Examination of the newborn infant.

Child health surveillance means the professional monitoring of not only the physical, but also the mental, behavioural and emotional growth and development of children. Midwives, obstetricians and general practitioners should be able to carry out an examination. It is important to have information about the parents' medical history, drug history, social history and family history along with the pregnancy and delivery details. Some other points should also be noted at this early stage. Have any problems been identified already? Has the baby passed urine/meconium? Is the baby feeding well? It is

Competencies of the UK nursing and midwifery workforce to mainstream genomics in the National Health Service: the ongoing gap between perceived importance and confidence in genomics.

The United Kingdom is recognised worldwide as a leader in genomics. The use of genomic technologies in the National Health Service (NHS) is expected to deliver faster and more accurate diagnoses, supporting personalized treatments to improve patient outcomes. The ambition of embedding genomic medicine in the diagnostic pathway requires involvement of the front-line clinical workforce, known as 'mainstreaming'. Nurses and midwives are the largest professionally qualified workforce in the National Health Service thus, it is anticipated that they will play key roles in mainstreaming. This study i

Oligohydramnios. Literature review and case study.

Quantitative evaluation of amniotic fluid volume is now widely used to evaluate fetal status during pregnancy. A finding of decreased fluid volume raises management issues and requires that nurse-midwives arrange collaborative care. This article reviews the literature relevant to amniotic fluid volume and oligohydramnios. The significance to nurse-midwifery is discussed. Conservative management of oligohydramnios is described. A case involving oligohydramnios diagnosed prior to term is presented and discussed.

Dispersion of contraceptive access policies across the United States from 2006 to 2021.

Person-centered contraceptive access benefits reproductive autonomy, sexual wellbeing, menstrual regulation, and other preventive health. However, contraceptive access varies by social and geographic position, with policies either perpetuating or alleviating health inequities. We describe geographic and time-trend variation in an index from fewer (less expansive) to greater (more expansive) aggregation of U.S. state-level contraceptive access policies across 50 states and Washington, D.C. (collectively, states) from 2006 to 2021. We collected data from primary and secondary sources on 23 polic

A greater nurse and midwife density protects against infant mortality globally.

PURPOSE: As the largest profession within the health care workforce, nurses and midwives play a critical role in the health and wellness of families especially children and infants. This study suggests those countries with higher nurse and midwife densities (NMD) had lower infant mortality rates (IMR). DESIGN AND METHODS: With affluence, low birthweight and urbanization incorporated as potential confounders, this ecological study analyzed the correlations between NMD and IMR with scatterplots, Pearson r correlation, partial correlation and multiple linear regression models. Countries were als

Asthma in pregnancy - a clinical update.

Midwives recognise that asthma in pregnancy is a common chronic condition that can lead to serious complications. Asthma has been defined as a complex polygenic disease which can result from genetic susceptibility and environmental exposure (Gunawardhana et al 2014), and is characterised by experiencing tightness in the chest, wheezing, production of thick sputum, cough and breathlessness (van der Wiel et al 2013). These symptoms occur in episodes, either daily, weekly, monthly or even only a few times a year, affecting approximately 8-9 per cent of pregnant women (Chan et al 2015; Gent et al
