Development and validation of the pain management competency scale for nurses and a nationwide survey of Chinese nurses.

BACKGROUND: Nurses' competency in pain management is essential for effectively alleviating patients' acute pain, controlling chronic pain, and promoting patient recovery. However, reliable tools for evaluating these competencies across different clinical specialties and healthcare settings are lacking. This study aimed to develop and validate a Pain Management Competency Scale for Nurses (PMCSN) and to assess the pain management competencies of nurses in China through a nationwide survey. METHODS: An item pool and a draft scale were developed through literature reviews, semi-structured interv

Effect of shift work on excessive daytime sleepiness in female nurses: results from the Japan Nurses' Health Study.

We investigated the relationship between shift work and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) among participants in the Japan Nurses' Health Study (JNHS). Responses of 9,728 female nurses to the 6th follow-up questionnaire were cross-sectionally analyzed. EDS was defined as an Epworth Sleepiness Scale score ≥11. EDS-associated factors were evaluated using Poisson regression analysis after adjustment for multiple confounders. Of the participants (mean age, 52.2 ± 8.0 yr), 28.7% were engaged in shift work, and the overall prevalence of EDS was 24.6%. EDS-associated factors were investigated separat

Pain assessment by patients and nurses, and nurses' notes on it, in early acute myocardial infarction. Part I.

Pain is a multi-dimensional phenomenon unique to each individual. Most of the research to date on acute pain has focused on oncology, medical and surgical patients. This pilot study was designed to explore the issues of pain assessment by patients and nurses in acute myocardial infarction, and the nurses' subsequent documentation of the pain assessment. Three research instruments were chosen to elicit the information required: A demographic questionnaire was constructed to elicit relevant data on patients and nurses. The Short Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SFMPQ) was used to measure the qual

Nurse-to-Nurse Boundaries: Transgressions, Grey Areas and Professionalism.

Nursing teams depend on trust, respect, and clear communication in their interactions, yet these ideals are continually negotiated within hierarchical structures, time pressures and competing demands. While much attention is given to nurse-patient boundaries, far less scrutiny is directed towards boundaries among nurses. The boundaries we maintain with colleagues are often taken for granted rather than openly discussed, even though they significantly shape the workplace culture we encounter each day and can reproduce subtle (and even overt) forms of exclusion, favouritism and harm. The consequ

Nursing and Chaplain Partnership for Pain Management: A Survey of Nurses.

PURPOSE: Pain is a universal experience for hospitalized patients, with physical, psychological, spiritual, and cognitive implications. As hospitals seek to identify nonpharmaceutical options for managing acute pain, the role of chaplains has been overlooked. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceptions of nurses regarding chaplain involvement in pain management. METHODS: A survey was distributed to nurses to determine if they would request spiritual care services in various patient and family scenarios. Respondents were dichotomized into two groups based on self-report of whethe

Perinatal Nurses Reported to Boards of Nursing: Understanding the Facts.

Today's healthcare system is in a state of transformation, as changes in technology, diagnostic approaches, treatments, and levels of professional practice occur on a regular basis. Nurses continue to be the most trusted profession. What has not changed in clinical practice is the amount of responsibility and level of accountability. Therefore, nurses are morally, legally, and ethically responsible for nursing judgment and clinical-based actions covered under each state's Nurse Practice Act, the American Nurses Association's core principles, and position statements as well as standard setting

Understanding clinical nurse specialist regulation by the boards of nursing.

The nursing profession and regulatory policy makers have struggled with the best and most consistent way to regulate advanced practice registered nurses in the role of clinical nurse specialist (CNS). Inconsistent scopes of practice, varying regulatory requirements, unavailability of certification examinations, and unclear educational preparation have been barriers to CNSs maximizing their clinical potential. Historical issues, the current nursing regulatory model in the United States, 4 domains of Boards of Nursing function, and the implications for future CNS regulation and the need for indi

Nurses' reflections on pain management in a nursing home setting.

Achieving optimal and safe pain-management practices in the nursing home setting continues to challenge administrators, nurses, physicians, and other health care providers. Several factors in nursing home settings complicate the conduct of clinical process improvement research. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of a sample of Colorado nursing home staff who participated in a study to develop and evaluate a multifaceted pain-management intervention. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 103 staff from treatment and control nursing homes, audiotaped, an

A comparison of Guatemalan and USA nurses' attitudes towards nursing.

BACKGROUND: Student nurses from the United States of America (USA) spent 5 weeks working with Guatemalan nurses in an acute care setting in Guatemala. This experience led to a heightened awareness of the global scope of nurses' discontent and a desire to better understand the driving factors and drawbacks to practising nursing in both the USA and Guatemala. AIM: The purpose of this research was to identify those factors that discourage nurses and those that motivate nurses to continue in their practice despite the drawbacks. METHOD: Qualitative interviews using field notes were conducted wit

Nursing informatics: the key to unlocking contemporary nursing practice.

Nursing informatics is a relatively new nursing specialty. Recognized by the American Nurses' Association in 1992, this field within nursing has grown exponentially. Once the purview of highly specialized individuals, nursing informatics has now crept into all dimensions of nursing, from domain of advanced nurse practitioners to prominence in critical care nursing. Nowhere is the management and processing of health-related information more important than in the care of the critically ill patient. Fast-paced environments, split-second decision making, wireless communications, monitoring systems

Genetic knowledge possessed by American nurses and nursing students.

As diseases of genetic origin have increased their impact on society's health, nursing's role has also increased. Nurses may not be referring those needing it for genetic counselling or prenatal diagnosis and may be inadvertently giving patients erroneous information based on lack of knowledge. A questionnaire was used to examine the overall adequacy and specific knowledge in the more commonly encountered genetic disorders such as sickle cell disease, Rh disease and Down's syndrome. It also included interpretation of risk and basic knowledge. The sample consisted of 366 senior nursing students
