BACKGROUND: Falls may cause serious health conditions among older population. Fall-related physical factors are thought to be associated with occlusal conditions. However, few studies examined the relationship between occlusal force and falls. To identify the association between occlusal force and falls among community-dwelling elderly individuals in Japan, public health nurses conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study.
METHODS: We performed extensive physical assessments of five items: maximum occlusal force, handgrip strength, maximal knee extensor strength, one-leg standing time with e

Intermittent self-catheterisation (ISC) is deemed the preferred option for the management of urinary incontinence and/or retention in patients requiring a catheter. It also allows patients to self-care, thereby placing fewer demands on district nursing (DN) services and meeting the requirements of the current health policy agenda. Yet many patients who could benefit from ISC in the community still use a long-term urinary catheter. This may contribute to increased morbidity, poorer quality of life, and unnecessary visits from the DN team. This article analyses the role of the district nurse in

Enteral tube feeding provides nutritional stability for individuals unable to meet requirements orally. However, the psychosocial consequences of enteral tube feeding, particularly loneliness arising from disrupted social eating practices, remain under-recognised in community care. Eating is a socially and culturally embedded activity linked to identity, belonging and relational connection. For individuals receiving long-term enteral tube feeding, altered participation in shared mealtimes and social rituals may increase vulnerability to isolation despite physiological stability. Lipoedema is a chronic progressive adipose disorder that affects mainly women and presents as symmetrical enlargement of the buttocks and legs. It is commonly misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphoedema, but careful assessment will reveal a disproportionate enlargement below the waist which is resistant to dieting, sparing of the feet, legs are tender or painful to touch and bruise easily, there is occasional orthostatic oedema, and there is often significant psychological morbidity. Lipoedema is a oestrogen-regulated condition with onset around puberty in 78% of women, and there is often a strong

The practice of healthcare professionals performing routine catheter changes and the education of patients and carers regarding these procedures is discussed. Patients' sexual needs when catheterisation is used as a method of urinary management are considered, and options for maintaining a normal life style are described.

Increasingly, health communication scholars are attending to how hospital built environments shape communication, patient care processes, and patient outcomes. This multimethod study was conducted on two floors of a newly designed urban hospital. Nine focus groups interviews were conducted with 35 health care professionals from 10 provider groups. Seven of the groups were homogeneous by profession or level: nursing (three groups), nurse managers (two groups), and one group each of nurse care technicians ("techs") and physicians. Two mixed groups were comprised of staff from pharmacy, occupatio

Tuberous sclerosis is a multi-system genetic disorder affecting up to one in 6000 newborn infants. It is about one third as common as cystic fibrosis, and half as common as Duchennes muscular dystrophy, yet many doctors and health professionals are ill-acquainted with the condition. Parents who turn to medical text books for information find only a brief mention of a few, frequently out-dated facts. Antonia Clarke and John Osborne describe the symptoms of the disorder and the special needs of affected children and their families.

Older adults aged 65 years and over are particularly vulnerable to seasonal influenza as their immune system is weaker than that of younger adults. The influenza vaccination helps to reduce influenza severity and the incidence of complications, but a range of factors can affect uptake among older people. These factors can be categorised as follows: the system of vaccination; influenza vaccination mistrust and fear of side-effects; health beliefs and behaviours; and other factors. Various interventions to maximise influenza vaccination uptake among older people in the community have been identi

BACKGROUND: United Kingdom legislation and clinical standards for schizophrenia challenge nurses to re-examine the support that they provide to carers. Nurses are in a key position to provide this support but may lack the necessary skills to do so. The training programme evaluated in the present study aimed to address this problem.
STUDY AIM: To evaluate change in clinical practice brought about by post-registration training for mental health nurses in supporting carers of people diagnosed with schizophrenia.
DESIGN/METHODS: The study was undertaken in collaboration between the Universities

Service users living with Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) often delay or avoid seeking diagnosis or treatment because of a fear of judgement or feelings of shame associated with their obsessions and compulsions. They may feel that their behaviour defies societal norms, which can lead to social isolation, and in turn, further contribute to health inequality. When such individuals present with physical illness and are seen by district nurses, it is imperative that behaviours are understood and approached appropriately. It is important to develop therapeutic relationships and consider their h

This demonstration project used student nurses (n = 12) on community deployment to provide health instruction among rural school-age populations in Zimbabwe. A quasi-experimental (pre- and post-test), non-equivalent control group design was used and consisted of 141 school pupils in the intervention group and 144 pupils in the comparison group (N = 285). The curriculum focused on prevention of STDs, HIV/AIDS and drugs (alcohol, tobacco and marijuana). A gain in health knowledge scores among the intervention group was reported at post-test. More than 70% of the pupils who received health instru

IMPORTANCE: Patients from socially disadvantaged backgrounds experience disproportionately worse health care outcomes. Nurses provide most care to patients in hospitals and are informants of health care quality and equity.
OBJECTIVE: To understand what hospital nurses say helps or hinders their ability to provide quality care to socially disadvantaged populations.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This qualitative study involved a directed content analysis of open-text responses from the RN4CAST-NY/IL survey, which was conducted between April and June 2021. Participants were registered nurs

Spirituality plays a significant role in end-of-life and palliative care, influenced by patients' religious and cultural backgrounds. Facing the reality that one's own life or that of a loved one is nearing its end can evoke feelings of hopelessness, anxiety and depression. Spiritual practices, such as invoking the intercession of saints or patrons, can provide comfort and hope, and a sense of meaning during this challenging and difficult time. Integrating these spiritual interventions into palliative care can support emotional wellbeing and enhance the holistic care of patients and their fami

Effective emergency nurse-patient (EN) communication and ENs' communication with other healthcare workers have implications for patient outcomes. Effective EN-patient communication informs and empowers patients. This study sought to better understand ENs frontstage and backstage interactions in a metropolitan emergency department (ED). The researcher engaged in participant observation of 15 different ENs' healthcare interactions with patients and other healthcare workers in the ED for a total of 47 hours and 30 minutes. Iterative analysis of field notes builds reveal two key observations. Firs

Nurses employed by schools and health departments have varying responsibilities for curricula related to menstruation, menarche, and sexuality. Nevertheless, the school nurse is usually a source of information on these subjects whether employed full-time in school health or also participating in other nursing roles in the community. This survey examines the involvement of school nurses in curricula related to human reproduction including contraception. Data about their involvement in these classroom topics provides a basis for evaluating their roles and making recommendations for subsequent co

Patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) often face significant challenges in receiving optimal care in the community. This condition can lead to serious complications if not addressed, including infection, delayed healing, amputation, decreased quality of life, financial burdens and mobility impairments. Community nurses are uniquely positioned to support DFU management, as they serve as the first point of contact for individuals managing this condition. They offer essential education on foot care and emphasise the importance of early intervention. In this context, using Salmon White's model

Problems associated with long-term catheters can place increased demands on nurses' time and resources. This article reports a study which investigated the nursing management of 113 patients with long-term suprapubic catheters. The study identified that 52% of catheters were changed routinely, 30% of catheters were changed only when they became blocked and 30% of nurses experienced problems when changing catheters. A total of 42% of patients received either a bladder 'washout' or instillation and 60% required a dressing around their suprapubic site. This study also examined the reasons for app

Research indicates that approximately one in six people will experience a common mental health condition such as depression or anxiety, while people with severe mental illness commonly experience significant health inequalities. Nurses will come into frequent contact with people experiencing mental health issues in hospitals and in the community. Mental state assessment is a tool that enables nurses to develop an understanding of an individual's mental health that will be universally recognised across healthcare services. This article provides an outline of the various elements involved in a m
