Improving Patient Safety Culture Perceptions in Resource-Limited Operating Rooms: A Nurse-Led Multifaceted Implementation of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist.

BACKGROUND: Strengthening patient safety culture (PSC) is essential for enhancing clinical practice, teamwork, and nursing leadership in surgical settings. However, evidence on interventions that promote PSC in operating rooms (ORs) in low- and middle-income countries remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between a multifaceted intervention and PSC perceptions among OR professionals in a resource-limited setting. METHODS: A quasiexperimental, nonrandomized before-and-after study with a concurrent control group was conducted over 21 months across 12 ORs in two tertiary hospi

National compliance with UK wide guidelines for usage of valproate in women of childbearing potential.

Valproate (VPA) is an effective treatment for epilepsy and also used in bipolar disorder. However, VPA is associated with a significant risk of birth defects and developmental disorders if used during pregnancy. This has led to the introduction of measures to reduce the use of valproate in women of childbearing potential such as the 'Prevent' pregnancy prevention program (PPP) and the completion of an annual risk acknowledgement form (ARAF). The aim of the current audit was to assess compliance with the guidance. An audit tool was made available to neurologists registered with the Association

Audit of outcomes from pre-school stammering intervention in a defined catchment population in the west of Ireland.

We have carried out an audit of outcomes from a pre-school stammering intervention offered to all 64 children, aged under 5 years referred from a defined catchment population to a single speech and language therapist over an 11 year period (1993 -2003 inclusive). Therapy was based on a client centred eclectic approach which combines elements of direct therapy focused on the child's speech and a number of indirect approaches to treatment which focus on changing the child's environment. Follow-up was conducted by means of a short questionnaire to the parents. Non responders were assessed informa

Communication skills workshops in learning disability nursing.

This article investigates the effects of a combination of direct speech, language therapy and staff training on the communication skills of nursing and support staff working with people who have a severe learning disability and challenging behaviour. The approach aimed to help staff choose, prioritize and implement changes in communication. The input was effective in increasing the knowledge of the staff group with regard to challenging behaviour and communication breakdown, and in changing the communicative behaviour of staff. The changes measured were those of longer interactions occurring b

The use of the Modified Norton Scale in nursing-home patients.

Patients in three nursing-home wards in Sweden were in 1991 assessed by the Modified Norton Scale (MNS). Of the 71 patients, 38 (49%) were considered to be at risk of developing pressure sores. Six of the patients had a total of eight pressure sores. Five sores were assessed as stage II, two sores as stage III and one sore as stage IV. Only two of the six patients with pressure sores had any preventive equipment in their beds. The nursing and medical documentation of the existing pressure sores was not satisfactory. Individual programs for skin care and routine assessment with a pressure sore

Stop antibiotic resistance - A roller coaster ride through "antibiotic stewardship," "prescription auditing" and "AWaRe" assessment tool.

The emergence of superbugs and highly resistant organisms like methicillin-resistant staphylococci, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae demands the monitoring of antibiotic prescription and usage in various domains. The impact of antibiotic resistance is huge that it increases mortality, morbidity, and economic costs. The issue has to be addressed at various levels and that is why regulatory bodies implement antibiotic stewardship programs. These programs give a list of guidelines like infection control, tracking antibiotic use, prescription auditing, and

Nurse practitioner sutured wounds: a quality assurance review.

This study found a low infection rate (3.1%) in occupationally related lacerations sutured by an on site nurse practitioner in a meat-packing plant where a high infection rate might be expected. This is compared to an overall infection rate of 1% to 30% of all sutured wounds cited in other studies. This review suggests that worksite availability of a nurse practitioner with expertise in suturing and aseptic technique is correlated to a low infection rate. Findings suggest that prophylactic antibiotics do not preclude good wound care, but may still be merited in wounds at high risk of subsequen

The nurse's role in managing constipation.

Constipation is a problem that affects patients in many care settings. Although recommendations are made for specific groups of patients with constipation, such as older patients and children, there is less information available for general adult patients. Angela Day discusses the need for clinical audit to ensure that nurses are using the most effective options for managing and preventing constipation, and examines the treatment options currently available.

Explainable AI for Equitable Nurse Scheduling: Pragmatic Pre-Post Implementation Study.

BACKGROUND: Inequitable and time-consuming shift scheduling contributes to nurse burnout, dissatisfaction, and turnover. In Taiwan, annual nurse turnover reaches 11.6%, with rigid 3-shift systems and unfair workload distribution frequently cited as key drivers. Although artificial intelligence (AI) scheduling tools exist, most lack transparency and do not formally address algorithmic bias, limiting clinical adoption. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to design, deploy, and evaluate a transparent, fairness-audited, explainable AI-enabled nurse scheduling decision support system (XAI-NSDSS) to reduce

Beyond Triage: The Critical Role of Emergency Nurses in COPD Assessment and Management-Insights from Patients and Staff.

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) remains a leading cause of emergency department (ED) presentation, hospitalisation, and preventable healthcare utilisation worldwide. Although guidelines advocate coordinated, preventative, and community-based management, care within ED settings often remains reactive and crisis-driven. Nurses occupy a central role in COPD management; however, the experiential dimensions of nursing practice and its contribution to improving patient outcomes are insufficiently understood. Objectives: To explore the lived experiences of patients, nurses an
