Are pediatric practicum experiences a beneficial component of registered nurse education programs? Nursing students and new graduates weigh in: A qualitative descriptive research study.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives requires baccalaureate registered nurse education programs to deliver a generalist curriculum meeting entry-level competencies. To fulfill this requirement, nursing programs ensure the provision of practice opportunities for hands-on experience with patients of all ages through practicum. Current literature suggests the limited availability of clinical placement opportunities in pediatric settings. This may reduce the opportunity for nursing students to become acquainted with the unique needs of infants, children, and a

Early Evidence Indicates Vitamin D Improves Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Nursing Implications and Future Research Opportunities.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects approximately 11.2% of the population. Yet, full understanding of its etiology and optimal treatment remains elusive. Understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of IBS has been limited. However, research is beginning to identify the cause as multifactorial (e.g., low-grade local mucosal inflammation, systemic immune activation, altered intestinal permeability, intestinal hypersensitivity, altered central nervous system processing, changes in intestinal microbiota). Understanding of the role of vitamin D in intestinal inflammation, immunity, and gastr

Embedding Service User Experience ('Experts by Experience') Into Undergraduate Mental Health Nursing Education: A Co-Production Research Project.

Internationally, the need to have service user involvement (the 'voice' of recovery journeys) as an established and significant feature on the landscape of professional development has been widely discussed in the area of mental health nursing (MHN) education for over a decade. Service user involvement contributes to a different understanding, bringing 'new' ways of knowing in nursing education and potentially new ways of practicing within mental health services. The objective of this co-produced research was to investigate the current local 'state of play' of service user involvement in MHN s

Narrative Inquiry Into Shelter-Seeking by Women With a History of Repeated Incarceration: Research and Nursing Practice Implications.

Nurses who provide care in the community to women with a history of repeated incarceration may struggle to understand the full extent of the barriers faced by this population and as a result risk giving suboptimal care to an already underserved group. This narrative inquiry study of stories told by 10 women with histories of repeated incarceration fulfilled 2 purposes: to demonstrate how women's shelter-seeking stories exposed uniquely complex patterns of health opportunity and risk and to demonstrate how storytelling might serve as an informative mode of nursing health assessment for this pop

Partnering With Generative Artificial Intelligence for Quantitative Data Analysis in Nursing Research: A Practical Workflow for Ethical Collaboration.

Reproducibility and replicability are our scientific and ethical mandate, and the foundation of trust in nursing science and research. Both rest on transparent documentation of how data were actually analyzed. The rising use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in research intersects with this mandate, with the potential to either support or undermine it, yet practical guidance for conducting GenAI-assisted quantitative analysis remains limited. This gap is particularly relevant for nurse scientists, who increasingly work with complex, biologically-informed datasets spanning genomics,

Consequences and predictors of depression in patients with chronic heart failure: implications for nursing care and future research.

Depression is common among patients with chronic heart failure (HF) and leads to more symptoms of HF, decreased quality of life, and an increased risk for premature death. Depressed HF patients also use more health care resources, which increases the economic burden on the health care system. The assessment of risk factors of depression such as age younger than 60-65 years, poor physical functioning, previous depression, poor self-efficacy, living alone, and distressful relationships, in combination with the use of depression instruments, can be helpful in detecting depression in HF patients.
