The paradox of "detachment disorders": binding-disruptions of dissociative process.

This case is discussed in the contexts of affect theory, attachment theory, and dissociative experience. Dissociative adaptations to living that become entrenched resistances during psychotherapeutic inquiry give way to a scrupulous attention to the characteristics of dissociative experiencing. Somatosensory free association and appreciation of experiential aspects of depersonalization, derealization, and dissociative amnesia open new areas of negotiation between patient and therapist. Paradigms from infant attachment and adult attachment research parsimoniously explicate psychodynamic formula

Object loss and object relations in depressive personality analogues.

The author investigated the extent to which self-reported early object loss and Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) measures of object relations differentiated individuals with a depressive personality from dysthymic persons and highly dependent individuals. In an undergraduate analogue sample of 54 students, those with a depressive personality reported a nonsignificantly higher proportion of object loss than did dysthymic and highly dependent participants. Those in the depressive personality and dependent groups had less complex representations of others than did those with dysthymia, and those

The development of dissociation in maltreated preschool-aged children.

Dissociation reflects disruptions in the integration of memories, perception, and identity into a coherent sense of self, and may develop following childhood maltreatment. The preschool years were identified as an important period for the development of dissociation. However, prior research has not examined the development of dissociation during this time. In order to address this gap, evidence of dissociation in 45 maltreated children, assessed for sexual abuse, physical abuse, and neglect, was compared with dissociation in 33 nonmaltreated children. Rather than depend on adult observer repor

Depression and fixations.

The concept of fixation occupies an important position in psychoanalytic theory. The mechanism of fixations cannot be explained solely by means of the notions of regression and repetition. On the basis of a theory of depression in which depression is seen as the outcome of a fetishistic cathexis of the 'shadow of the object' set up in the ego as a 'depressive object', the author postulates that fixations become organized during the depressive movements of childhood.

Severe remote memory loss with minimal anterograde amnesia: a clinical note.

We describe a patient who presented with apparent human Klüver-Bucy syndrome. After pharmacological treatment, his problems gradually resolved, with the exception of some unconcern about this present situation, a mild naming and word list generation deficit, a severe remote memory loss and, in comparison, a minimal anterograde memory disturbance. He has been able to relearn certain details of his personal past. These relearned memories are independent of a sense of personal intimacy. The "relearned memory" was frequently associated with a memory of how and when the information had been reacqui

Parental representations of transsexuals.

The parental representations of 30 male-to-female transsexuals were rated using a measure of fundamental parental dimensions and shown to be of acceptable validity as a measure both of perceived and actual parental characteristics. Scores on that measure were compared separately against scores returned by matched male and female controls. The transsexuals did not differ from the male controls in their scoring of their mothers but did score their fathers as less caring and more overprotective. These differences were weaker for the comparisons made against the female controls. Item analyses sugg

Transsexualism and a new type of psychosurgery.

A discussion of "The Transsexual Wish in a Psychotic Character" by Katherine MacVicar, M.D. Patients in increasing numbers are seeking sex-reassignment surgery. The topic receives coverage in both the lay and professional press; many advocate surgery as the only "cure". Clinical study reveals that these patients have borderline personality organization and are seeking to discard bad and aggressive features and to replace them with a new idealized perfection. Surgical procedures in these cases can usefully be conceptualized as a new type of psychosurgery.

Attachment styles of People Living with HIV/AIDS.

Factors that involve the dynamics in interpersonal relationships and may have consequences in health are still little explored in people living with HIV/AIDS. The aim was to identify the evidences of literature regarding adult attachment style and HIV. It is an Integrative literature review. Seven databases were explored, using the combination of key words and Boolean connectors: "Attachment Style OR Object Attachment AND HIV". A reasonable number of articles addressed attachment among people with HIV as a mediator to post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and stress. The prevalence of ins

Early developmental origins of social knowledge.

In addition to core knowledge, the prenatal environment, parental care, and early life experience play substantial roles in the establishment of social cognition. Given the evolutionary importance of early life care in humans and mammals in general, there are innate reward and stress based neuroendocrine mechanisms that are critical to maternal infant bonding as well as later social behavior.

Attachment Between Nurses and Patients in Hospital Settings: Concept Analysis Using Walker and Avant's Method.

RATIONALE: Although attachment is a key concept in human relationships, nurse-patient attachment in clinical settings has not been clearly defined. AIM: To clarify the concept of nurse-patient attachment from the patient's perspective. METHOD: Walker and Avant's eight-step concept analysis framework was employed. A systematic search was conducted in databases including PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, and PsycINFO for peer-reviewed studies published from 2000 to March 2026. Inclusion criteria focused on nurse-patient interactions, attachment theory in clinical settings, and patient-reported e

Intersections Among Attachment, Empathy and Emotion Regulation in Middle Childhood.

Within secure attachment relationships, caregivers function as primary sources of self-regulation and foster empathy. Affective empathy refers to the direct sharing of others' emotional states, whereas cognitive empathy involves understanding the meaning of others' affective displays. Although robust evidence links secure attachment to empathy, research examining the mediating role of emotion regulation (ER) during middle childhood remains limited. Participants were 214 children (108 girls) aged 8-12 years (M = 9.28 ± 1.09) and their parents (86.3% mothers). Children completed the Security Sca

Crawling into a hole: Attachment insecurity, shame, and hikikomori symptoms in an adolescent population.

Hikikomori is a severe and prolonged form of social withdrawal observed in young people across industrialized countries. This study examined associations among attachment insecurity, shame, and hikikomori symptoms and investigated their unique and relative contributions to one another to better understand their interconnected roles in social withdrawal. Participants were 137 non-clinical adolescents (54 males, 83 females; age range 12-22 years) who completed a survey. Hikikomori symptoms were assessed using the Dutch Hikikomori Questionnaire-25. Shame was measured using an abbreviated Experien

The moderating role of attachment in the association between physiological synchrony in married couples and supportive behavior in the transition to parenthood.

Despite supportive behaviors playing a central role in intimate relationships, the extent to which physiological and psychological factors are involved in the quality of the observed spousal support, remains largely unknown. From a physiological stance, cardiac synchrony has been identified as an important component involved in dyadic interpersonal interactions. This study aims to examine whether individual differences in attachment determine, at least to some extent, whether cardiac synchrony enhances or impedes the quality of the observed spousal support. Specifically, this study examines wh

Why Is Maternal Control Harmful? The Relation between Maternal Control, Insecure Attachment and Antisocial Personality Disorder Features in Chinese College Students: A Sequential Mediation Model.

BACKGROUND: Previous work has indicated that a negative parenting style is associated with antisocial personality disorder features in Chinese college students, yet few studies have explored the unique role of negative mothering in children's antisocial personality disorder. METHODS: The current study mainly examined the sequential mediation effect of parental antipathy and neglect (PAN) and mother negative loving (a form of insecure attachment) in the association between mother control and adulthood antisocial personality disorder features (ASPD features) in the framework of attachment theor

Desired attachment and breakup distress relate to automatic approach of the ex-partner.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Romantic relationship breakups can lead to severe emotional disturbances including major depression. Anxious attachment and desired attachment with the ex-partner are hypothesized to elicit repetitive thought about the breakup and the former partner and attempts to reunite with (i.e. approach) the ex-partner, which fuel breakup distress. Since prior research on this topic has mostly used survey methodology, the study aim was to examine the relations between above-mentioned variables employing a behavioral measure of approach of the ex-partner. METHODS: Automatic app

Childhood adversity and attachment anxiety predict adult symptom severity and health anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity is associated with somatization, including physical symptom burden and health anxiety. Attachment theory offers a developmental framework to understand adult somatization, as attachment phenomena are theoretically and empirically related to physiological regulation, affect regulation, and childhood adversity, all of which are relevant to somatization. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify the pathways by which childhood adversity and attachment insecurity influence physical symptom burden and health anxiety in adults. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: T

Malevolent object relations: A multimethod study of female survivors of childhood abuse.

Although childhood victimization is associated with impairments in object relations, it is not clear how different measures comparatively perform in assessing this relationship. This study examined the connection between emotional, physical, and sexual abuse in childhood and three methods of assessing malevolent object representations. Sixty adult women, recruited from an urban primary-care clinic, were administered the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), the Object Relations Inventory (ORI) interview, and a version of the Early Memories Test (EMT)/interview. Ratings of malevolent object relatio

Attachment in OCD: A meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: It has been proposed to extend the cognitive-behavioural model of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with attachment theory to shed light on the affective and developmental factors underlying the disease. With a growing number of empirical studies on the subject, this meta-analysis aims to quantify a possible relationship between attachment insecurity and OCD. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted for studies in adult populations of patients with OCD as well as general populations displaying symptoms of OCD. Effect sizes of attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance were

Self, other and individuation: resolving narcissism through the lunar and solar paths of the Rosarium.

This paper describes narcissism as our natural, infant-like behaviour, and specifies three characteristics relating to the evacuation and avoidance of distress, to control, and to distancing from relationship. It suggests that the processes of incarnation and individuation represent the development of the early ego and the 'resolution' of these narcissistic ways of being, including escape from the 'mirror trap'. The development of the early, controlling 'homunculus-ego' entails the loosening and broadening of ego-identifications and the ego becoming subject to the Self. This is an embodied-rel
