The Knowledge Acquired by Parents in Pregnancy Monitoring Consultations.

(1) Pregnancy surveillance nursing consultations in the pandemic context have undergone some changes, namely the restriction of accompanying persons. In this sense, assessing the knowledge acquired by parents in pregnancy surveillance is of great importance. Since there are no studies on the subject in the period before the pandemic, we will only assess the knowledge acquired by parents in pregnancy monitoring. (2) For this reason, the aim of our study is to evaluate the knowledge acquired by parents in pregnancy surveillance. (3) This study is descriptive, cross-sectional and quantitative in

Routine obstetrical interventions: research agenda for the next decade.

There are many interventions performed as a part of the active management of labor and birth that have remained unchanged over the years. Separating ritual from beneficial nursing care can guide the development of a research agenda. The agenda for the next 10 years can address some of the gaps remaining in the evidence-based foundation for routine interventions used during labor and birth. The gaps identify areas where unanswered questions prevent optimal care from occurring. These unanswered questions include optimal time for epidural administration; management of maternal movement during lab

The obstetrics scope of practice of master's prepared FNPs.

Ninety-four family nurse practitioners provided information about the extent of their obstetrics practice within the general activity categories of: diagnosing and managing normal pregnancy; diagnosing and managing problems in pregnancy; parent education during pregnancy; labor and delivery management; neonatal management and evaluation; and post-partum evaluation of the mother. Analysis of the results revealed that respondents provided education-related care more frequently than the management aspects of problem pregnancies, labor and delivery and neonatal care. Routine prenatal care--diagnos

Practices that minimize trauma to the genital tract in childbirth: a systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Trauma to the genital tract commonly occurs at birth, and can cause short- and long-term morbidity. Clinical measures to reduce its occurrence have not been fully identified. METHODS: A systematic review of the English language literature was conducted to describe the current state of knowledge on reduction of genital tract trauma before planning a large randomized controlled trial of ways to prevent such trauma. Randomized trials and other published reports were identified from relevant databases and hand searches. Studies were reviewed and assessed using a structured format. RE

Assessment of the process and outcomes of the first 1,000 births of a nurse-midwifery service.

This article is a retrospective descriptive analysis of the first 1,000 births conducted by the Nurse-Midwifery Group of Fresno County, California, over the period from 1980 to 1985. The multiethnic patient population was of mixed obstetric risk. Nurse-midwifery care was offered within the context of a comprehensive maternity care program in close collaboration with a perinatal health care team. Patient care outcomes were quite favorable when compared with county and state statistics. A perinatal mortality rate of 7.0/1,000 was observed. The incidence of low birth weight infants (5.7%) and the

Creating a healing environment.

To regain some of the principles of personalized care that were part of the foundation of nursing, Carondelet St. Mary's Health Center in Tucson, AZ, instituted a nurse case manager program in 1985. The program assigns a nurse case manager to coordinate patient and family care from an array of nursing services. Its special characteristic is a focus on home care after discharge. The basis for the program is a belief in holistic care, beginning during the hospital stay and continuing after discharge. Because the psychosocial and spiritual impact of the illness might not be felt until the client

Contributing factors of birth asphyxia in Thailand: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Birth asphyxia is of significant concern because it impacts newborn health from low to severe levels. In Thailand, birth asphyxia remains a leading cause of delayed developmental health in children under 5 years old. The study aimed to determine the maternal, fetal and health service factors contributing to birth asphyxia. METHODS: A case-control design was conducted on a sample of 4256 intrapartum chart records. The samples were selected based on their Apgar scores in the first minute of life. A low Apgar score (≤ 7) was chosen for the case group (852) and a high Apgar score (> 7

Obstetric emergency readiness in rural emergency departments: a cross-sectional survey of birthing and non-birthing hospitals in Montana, USA.

BACKGROUND: Rural emergency departments (EDs) increasingly serve as frontline providers of obstetric care due to widespread closures of labour and delivery (L&D) units. Building on a prior study that assessed hospital-level obstetric readiness using the WHO Emergency Obstetric Care (EmOC) Indicators, this study evaluates ED-specific preparedness for obstetric emergencies in a rural US state, with implications for similar settings globally. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Autumn 2024 involving ED medical and nursing staff from both birthing and non-birthing hospitals. The su

The presence and roles of nurse navigators in acute care hospitals.

OBJECTIVE: A survey of hospital-based nurse executives was conducted to determine the extent, approaches, and outcomes of nurse navigator (NN) programs. BACKGROUND: Nurse navigators are distinct from other recognized healthcare roles. Navigators most commonly focus on a single health condition with the goal of improving the provision of specified health services for an individual patient. METHODS: An 11-question Internet-based survey was e-mailed to 580 nurse executives in Texas. RESULTS: Of the respondents, only 24% implemented any type of NN program. Most of the respondents with navigator
