Lifestyle's alterations are hazardous for health. On one hand they produce a high rate of mortality and disease, on the other hand they cause a reduction of work outcomes and an increase of occupational accidents with important consequences for both worker's health and his/her financial status. The aim of this study is to review the scientific literature for possible relationships between mental health and lifestyle alterations of young workers. We considered as lifestyle factors the attitudes towards: smoking, alcohol consumption, eating, use of medications and doping substances, physical act

OBJECTIVES: Occupational health (OH) professionals could play a prominent role in smoking cessation treatment and support (SCTS) and help individuals and workplaces become smoke free. However, their role has not been evaluated. The aim of this study was to assess differences between OH professionals' perceptions of their role in SCTS by measuring three groups of OH professionals' attitudes, knowledge, and motivation concerning SCTS.
METHODS: We collected data through an online survey completed by a cross-sectional sample of OH professionals: OH physicians (n = 182), OH nurses (n = 296), and O

Contact with human blood is one of the vital issues concerning occupational exposure to biological factors. The fact that pathogens that create high health risk may be transmitted by blood must not be ignored. Considering the problem of biological exposure at workplace, HIV, HBV and HCV are recognized as the most essential viruses. Health care workers belong to the occupational group characterized by the most frequent contact with blood. Infections induced by blood borne pathogens are mostly observed among nurses, laboratory personnel and physicians. In the European Union countries, the USA an

BACKGROUND: Presenteeism, defined as attending work while ill, is a growing concern among healthcare professionals due to its impact on well-being, work function, and the quality of care. Despite extensive global research, evidence from Mongolia remains limited, where workforce shortages and systemic constraints uniquely shape presenteeism. We examined factors associated with presenteeism among Mongolian healthcare professionals.
METHODS: This study used an explanatory sequential mixed-method design. The quantitative phase consisted of a cross-sectional online survey of physicians and nurses

Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) is an occupational health threat with increasing incidence in the geographic area of Italy. Despite this, TBE vaccination rates have ranged from 10% to 40% in Italy, even in at-risk workers. The reasons for this low rate are investigated in this present study of the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of occupational physicians (OP) regarding TBE disease and vaccination in at-risk workers. A total of 229 OP participated in an internet-based survey by completing a structured questionnaire. Adequate general knowledge of TBE disease was found in 58% of OP. Accurate p

We describe the case of two workers evaluated in our occupational health unit. The first worker was a kitchen aide; the second was a primary care physician. Both had been diagnosed with narcolepsy and had obvious disability. We assessed occupational hazards related to their jobs, analysed their tasks, and performed medical examinations. Afterwards, we offered recommendations to the patients, consisting of avoidance of situations involving a risk of work accidents and improving their sleep habits. Narcolepsy is a rare disorder, but it has important social and occupational consequences. A better

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases worldwide. Dental plaque and saliva are major reservoirs for this microorganism, and some studies have shown that oral‒oral transmission is possible through close contact between physicians and dentists and their patients. This study aimed to investigate the occupational risk of gastrointestinal H. pylori infection among physicians and dentists.
METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted up to May 1st 2025. Irrelevant articles were excluded in three s

Good physical and mental health is a prerequisite for anyone planning to scuba dive. A fitness to dive certificate for those willing to enter a scuba diving course as well as for active divers, either amateur or occupational, can only be issued if there are no medical contraindications to dive. It is usually within the competence of a diving instructor, a manager of underwater work or a physician to assess a person's mental and physical health and grant them permission to stay under hyperbaric conditions. The legal requirements for issuing a fitness to dive certificate are different for recrea

It is well-recognized that staff health and wellbeing has a considerable influence on performance and productivity in any organization. The NHS is no different. Dr Steven Boorman's NHS health and well-being review made a powerful case for change in how staff health and wellbeing was understood, how it should be operationalized in the NHS, and how senior management must lead in developing new cultures that have health and wellbeing at their core. In particular, Dr Boorman demonstrated how staff health and wellbeing impacts on patient care. Ten years later, NHS staff remain more likely to incur

Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems continually evolve to meet the demands of user organizations, national authorities, and end users. Finland, a digital health pioneer, encountered challenges like system fragmentation and interoperability despite early EHR adoption. The rollout of national health information exchange (Kanta) services sought to address these issues but also introduced new usability concerns. In national cross-sectional usability surveys conducted among physicians in 2010, 2014, 2017, and 2021, we asked respondents to select five most pertinent development targets from a pre

Occupational rhinitis has been a prescribed industrial disease in the UK since 1907. It has only relatively recently received significant attention from otorhinolaryngologists although numerous studies have been performed in the past by occupational and industrial health physicians. At the present time the precise mechanisms of pathogenesis are unclear and would appear to be multiple. Recently interest has arisen because of compensation claims. Diagnosis made on the basis of the clinical history is subject to two problems: firstly, there is difficulty in differentiating between occupational an

UNLABELLED: CONTENT/OBJECTIVES: No recent national studies have been published on age at death and causes of death for U.S. physicians, and previous studies have had sampling limitations. Physician morbidity and mortality are of interest for several reasons, including the fact that physicians' personal health habits may affect their patient counseling practices.
METHODS: Data in this report are from the National Occupational Mortality Surveillance database and are derived from deaths occurring in 28 states between 1984 and 1995. Occupation is coded according to the U.S. Bureau of the Census c
