Ocean alkalinity enhancement is considered as an effective atmospheric CO2 removal approach, but currently, little is known about the carbon sequestration potential of implementing olivine addition in offshore waters. We investigated the effect of olivine addition on the seawater carbonate system by carrying out a deck incubation experiment in the Northern Yellow Sea; the dissolution rate of olivine was calculated based on the increase in seawater alkalinity (TA), and the CO2 sequestration potential was evaluated. The results showed that the dissolution of olivine increased seawater TA and dec

Humans have exhaustively combusted fossil fuels, and released pollutants into the environment, at continuously faster rates resulting in global average temperature increase and seawater pH decrease. Climate change is forecasted to exacerbate the effects of pollutants such as the emergent rare earth elements. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the combined effects of rising temperature (Δ = + 4 °C) and decreasing pH (Δ = - 0.4 pH units) on the bioaccumulation and elimination of gadolinium (Gd) in the bioindicator bivalve species Spisula solida (Surf clam). We exposed surf clam

The process of decreasing seawater pH due to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide known as ocean acidification is a global phenomenon with very strong regional effects. We report the first seasonal and interannual carbonate chemistry variabilities in the Philippines determined using carbonate boron systematics. Coral δ11B-pHsw from two contrasting site conditions showed more positive trends than basin-wide averages, suggesting that reef waters around the Philippines represented by these sites may be offsetting the general pH decline in global seawater. This pattern is consistent with δ11B-pHs

Rapid accumulation of greenhouse gases threatens humanity and global diversity. The oceans absorb 30% of anthropogenic carbon emissions annually, but adaptation to climate change by the biotic components of this sink are poorly understood. Lanternfishes (Myctophiformes) are the most abundant vertebrates on the planet by biomass and the dominant mesopelagic vertebrate consumers, thus crucial components of the global carbon cycle. However, it is unknown whether lanternfishes are adapting to global warming and ocean acidification (OA). We hypothesized that warming and OA would act as major shared

Our study focuses on an experimental demonstration of a novel method for CO2 removal from ocean water, which has captured up to 40% of all anthropogenically released CO2 emissions, that combines H2 and redox salt looping to induce pH swings in electrochemical flow cells. Model-driven design optimization guides 3-D printed electrolyte flow channel designs to alleviate mass-transfer limitations. A ridged flow channel with 1 mm thick fins protruding at an angle of 30° from the base reduces ferri-/ferro-cyanide redox salt concentration boundary layer thickness by up to 35% while restricting the pr

Extreme climate and weather events in the ocean, especially ocean acidification (OA) and marine heatwaves (MHWs), have strikingly accelerated in the past decades, yet their compound consequences remain poorly understood. The pearl oyster (Pinctada maxima), an endangered keystone species in Indo-Pacific reef ecosystems, is highly vulnerable to such events. Here, we assessed how OA-stressed P. maxima juveniles responded to MHWs (+3 °C), based on a total of 100 individuals exposed to two weeks. Oysters reared at pH 7.7 significantly increased activities of energy-metabolizing enzymes (T-ATP and N

Climate change and anthropogenic alterations in biogeochemical cycles are intensifying the frequency, duration, and potential toxicity of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in marine ecosystems. However, these effects are highly variable and depend on species identity, strain-specific traits, and local environmental conditions. Key drivers include rising sea surface temperatures, changes in salinity resulting from altered precipitation patterns and runoff, and elevated CO2 levels leading to ocean acidification. In this context, functional saturation is defined as the state in which a system's capacity to sustain additional productive or regulatory functions becomes constrained due to cumulative anthropogenic pressures, even if some physical space remains available. This review examines whether the progressive contraction of terrestrial plant communities under intensifying anthropogenic pressure can be functionally compensated by the expansion of marine macroalgal systems in a high-CO2 world. Integrating perspectives from Earth system ecology, biogeochemistry, and spatial analysis, the study evaluates

Understanding how the environment mediates an organism's ability to meet basic survival requirements is a fundamental goal of ecology. Vessel noise is a global threat to marine ecosystems and is increasing in intensity and spatiotemporal extent due to growth in shipping coupled with physical changes to ocean soundscapes from ocean warming and acidification. Odontocetes rely on biosonar to forage, yet determining the consequences of vessel noise on foraging has been limited by the challenges of observing underwater foraging outcomes and measuring noise levels received by individuals. To address

Ocean warming is causing global coral bleaching events to increase in frequency, resulting in widespread coral mortality and disrupting the function of coral reef ecosystems. However, even during mass bleaching events, many corals resist bleaching despite exposure to abnormally high temperatures. While the physiological effects of bleaching have been well documented, the consequences of heat stress for bleaching-resistant individuals are not well understood. In addition, much remains to be learned about how heat stress affects cellular-level processes that may be overlooked at the organismal l

Phytoplankton are aquatic unicellular eukaryotic (i.e. protists) or prokaryotic photosynthetic organisms thriving in the world oceans. They are at the base of aquatic food webs and play a key role in determining the effects of the environmental change on the ocean surface. Phytoplankton are responsible for around 50% of the net amount of carbon assimilated annually by photoautotrophs. The removal of atmospheric CO2 does not only depend on CO2 fixation, but long-term carbon sequestration also requires the export of the organic matter fixed by phytoplankton in the surface layer (euphotic zone) i

Due to anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, open oceans are acidifying, and the acidification rate is relatively stable. While coastal waters experience even greater pH fluctuations from terrestrial inputs, upwelling, and biological activity, this variability necessitates detailed long-term research in these regions. Based on field observations and historical literature data from 1980 to 2016, the interannual variability of seawater pH and its driving mechanisms were analyzed in Jiaozhou Bay, a highly human-perturbed bay in China. The results revealed an overall decreasing trend in pH

The dissolution of marine carbonate minerals represents a scalable carbon dioxide (CO2) removal approach toward global climate goals. In this study, potential buffering capacity of naturally distributed carbonate minerals against future rises in atmospheric CO2 and thereby coastal acidification were assessed using field data obtained in the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea and Chinese major estuaries. Results showed that highly soluble carbonate minerals such as calcite and aragonite dominated surface sediments, constituting 8-12 % of dry weight of sediments in Chinese major estuaries, while lowly solubl

Variations in stratospheric ozone and changes in the aquatic environment by climate change and human activity are modifying the exposure of aquatic ecosystems to UV radiation. These shifts in exposure have consequences for the distributions of species, biogeochemical cycles, and services provided by aquatic ecosystems. This Quadrennial Assessment presents the latest knowledge on the multi-faceted interactions between the effects of UV irradiation and climate change, and other anthropogenic activities, and how these conditions are changing aquatic ecosystems. Climate change results in variation

Climate change can have a pronounced impact on the physiology and behaviour of fishes. Notably, many climate change stressors, such as global warming, hypoxia and ocean acidification (OA), have been shown to alter the kinematics of predator-prey interactions in fishes, with potential effects at ecological levels. Here, we review the main effects of each of these stressors on fish escape responses using an integrative approach that encompasses behavioural and kinematic variables. Elevated temperature was shown to affect many components of the escape response, including escape latencies, kinemat

Climate change and ocean acidification will expose marine organisms to synchronous multiple stressors, with early life stages being potentially most vulnerable to changing environmental conditions. We simultaneously exposed encapsulated molluscan embryos to three abiotic stressors-acidified conditions, elevated temperate, and solar UV radiation in large outdoor water tables in a multifactorial design. Solar UV radiation was modified with plastic filters, while levels of the other factors reflected IPCC predictions for near-future change. We quantified mortality and the rate of embryonic develo

The global atmospheric CO2 concentration continues to rise, leading to increasingly severe greenhouse effects, ocean acidification, and extreme climate events. Therefore, the development of efficient CO2 capture materials is urgently needed. Aerogels, a class of three-dimensional nanoporous solid materials formed by the crosslinking of nanoparticles or polymer molecular chains via the sol-gel process, exhibit outstanding advantages in CO2 capture due to their high specific surface area, tunable nanopores, and abundant surface functionalizable sites. This paper systematically summarizes the pre

Ocean acidification (OA) represents a major threat to marine ecosystems, causing detrimental effects mainly on calcifying organisms. However, the limpet Patella caerulea is one of the few calcifiers that can inhabit the naturally acidified areas of the Castello Aragonese vent systems (Ischia Island, Italy). Its presence suggests that this species may have developed tolerance or adaptive strategies to cope with OA. Nevertheless, the specific biological mechanisms remain largely unknown. To address this gap of knowledge, in our study we conducted physiological and metabolomics analyses on reside

Aerosol deposition significantly impacts ocean ecosystems by providing bioavailable iron (Fe). Acid uptake during the transport of Fe-containing particles has been shown to cause Fe dissolution. However, carbonate in dust particles affects the Fe acidification process, influencing Fe dissolution. Here, we carried out atmospheric observations and modeling to show that Fe solubility substantially increased from locations near dust sources to downwind regions in aged dust particles with pH > 3, driven by proton-promoted dissolution. We found that Fe solubility remained low when Ca solubility was

The largest mass extinction of biota in the Earth's history occurred during the Permian-Triassic transition and included two extinctions, one each at the latest Permian (first phase) and earliest Triassic (second phase). High seawater temperature in the surface water accompanied by euxinic deep-intermediate water, intrusion of the euxinic water to the surface water, a decrease in pH, and hypercapnia have been proposed as direct causes of the marine crisis. For the first-phase extinction, we here add a causal mechanism beginning from massive soil and rock erosion and leading to algal blooms, re
