IgD production by short-term human peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBM) cultures was studied to establish the in vitro correlates of low serum IgD expression. Cells of persons with less than 3 micrograms/ml IgD in the serum, referred to as the low-serum IgD phenotype (LISP), were analyzed. The enzymatic activity of adenylate cyclase in homogenates and membrane-rich fractions prepared from rabbit iris-ciliary bodies and bovine trabecular meshwork was found to be inhibited by timolol. Treatment of iris-ciliary body homogenates with Triton X-305 resulted in abolition of the inhibitory effect of the drug on the activity of the enzyme. The stimulatory effect of salbutamol on the enzyme was also susceptible to blockade by timolol. A Fasciola hepatica tegument antigen preparation was obtained from intact adult worms by solubilization with a non-ionic detergent, Nonidet P-40. This antigen preparation contains antigens useful for the serodiagnosis of infection with this parasite. However, the antigen preparation is inadequate for use in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The present work demonstrates that fractionation by demulsification of this antigen preparation with ammonium sulphate results in a soluble aqueous phase which contains F. hepatica serodiagnostic antigens which can then be applied to the ELISA.

An inhibition radioimmunoassay and a two-site immunoradiometric (four-layer) assay for the quantification of measles virus nucleocapsid antigen were established and their sensitivities compared. PGE2 binding sites or receptors of porcine ciliary nonpigmented epithelial (NPE) and pigmented epithelial (PE) membranes were solubilized with detergents (CHAPS and Triton X100). Detergent-unextractable structures of synaptic plasma membrane of rat cerebrum were observed by whole mount electron microscopy. The globular structures were identified as postsynaptic densities (PSDs) from several criteria and appeared to consist of folded strings, to which a number of other molecules might be attached. Some of the globular structures were attached with subsynaptic webs. The structures contained a number of finely striated small strips (10-20 nm wide, 60-100 nm long), parts of which were peeled off from PSD cytoskeletal base by N-lauroyl sarcosinate.

In a cohort study of 50, 282 pregnancies recruited between 1958 and 1965, there were 462 gravidae who used nonmercurial spermicides (mostly nonoxynol-9 (95% confidence limits, 0.6 to 1.6). There were also 889 women who used phenylmercuric acetate (no longer available as a spermicide); the corresponding rate ratio was 0.9 (0.6 to 1.3). Limb reduction deformities, neoplasms, Down's syndrome, and hypospadias did not occur in excess in children exposed to spermicides.

This work focuses on improving the stability of Burkholderia cepacia lipase immobilized on styrene-divinylbenzene by using chemical additives and a cost-effective physical adsorption method.
