Correlation between severity of obesity and mortality in cardiogenic shock.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiogenic shock (CS) is associated with high mortality despite the development of risk stratification tools and new treatment strategies. Obesity, although a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, is not included in current risk stratification tools for CS. A relationship between mortality and obesity has only been shown in subsets populations of CS; there is not yet a clear relationship between severity of obesity and all-cause CS. OBJECTIVES: In this study we evaluate the relationship between rising body mass index (BMI) and mortality in all-cause CS. METHODS: All patients

Use of Calcium Channel Blockers and the Risk of All-cause Mortality and Severe Illness in Patients With COVID-19: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Owing to the reported safety concerns, we aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the effect of preadmission/prediagnosis use of calcium channel blockers (CCBs) on the clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19. A systematic literature search with no language restriction was conducted in electronic databases in July 2021 to identify eligible studies. The outcomes of interest were all-cause mortality and severe illness. A random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled summary measure for outcomes of interest with the preadmission/prediagnosis use of CCBs relat

Physicians' vs patients' global assessments of disease activity in rheumatology and musculoskeletal trials: A meta-research project with focus on reasons for discrepancies.

BACKGROUND: In most rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs), global assessments of disease activity by physicians and patients are 'anchor outcomes' in therapeutic trials evaluating whether a treatment is effective. OBJECTIVES: To compare physicians' vs patients' global assessments of disease activity in RMD trials and explore reasons for discrepancies between them. METHODS: Eligible trials were sampled from systematic reviews of treatments for RMDs by using the Cochrane database of systematic reviews (i.e., reviews from the Cochrane Musculoskeletal Group, [CMSG]). Thyroid disease in cervical dystonia.

There are many possible etiologies for cervical dystonia (CD), but a cause cannot be identified in most cases. Most recent attention has focused on genetic causes, although a few prior studies have highlighted autoimmune mechanisms instead. Because autoimmune disorders frequently co-exist, the current study evaluated the hypothesis that autoimmune disorders might be more common in CD than neurological controls. The frequency of 32 common autoimmune disorders was evaluated using a systematic survey comparing 300 subjects with CD with 391 neurological controls. The frequency of thyroid disease w

Eye rubbing in the aetiology of keratoconus: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Keratoconus is a potentially blinding condition that slowly deforms the cornea in young people. Despite the increasing prevalence of keratoconus, the exact aetiology of the condition is unknown. This first systematic review examines the evidence of eye rubbing and its association with keratoconus and presents the findings of the meta-analysis. METHODS: Two independent reviewers searched the electronic databases for all potential articles published from 1st of January 1900 to 31st of July 2020 on eye rubbing and keratoconus. The researchers assessed the methodological quality of the s

Relationship Between Tea Drinking Behaviour and Rosacea: A Clinical Case-control Study.

The exact mechanisms of rosacea development are unknown, but it has been suggested that tea consumption may be associated with its development. To determine the relationship between tea drinking behaviour and rosacea, this clinical case-control study recruited 2,063 participants, who completed a questionnaire about tea drinking behaviour. A 1:1 ratio propensity score matching method was used to generate 619 cases and 619 controls. High-frequency tea drinking (3 times/day: adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 2.592; 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.225-5.485; ≥ 4 times/day; aOR 8.86; 95% CI 3.43-22.887)

A clinical and pathological description of 320 cases of naturally acquired Babesia rossi infection in dogs.

Babesia rossi causes the most severe clinical disease in dogs of all the babesia parasites. We included 320 naturally-infected dogs that presented for care at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital between 2006 and 2016. All dogs had mono-infections confirmed by multiplex PCR. The data allowed more accurate clinical classification of the disease and identified parameters that were associated with disease severity and death. Odds ratios for dying were significant (P < 0.05) for increased band neutrophil count, collapse at presentation; presence of cerebral signs; hypoglycaemia; hyperlac
