The great diversity of dinosaurian tooth shapes and sizes, and in particular, the amazing dental complexity in derived ornithischians has attracted a lot of attention. However, the evolution of dental batteries in hadrosaurids and ceratopsids is difficult to understand without a broader comparative framework. Here we describe tooth histology and development in the "middle" Cretaceous ornithischian dinosaur Changchunsaurus parvus, a small herbivore that has been characterized as an early ornithopod, or even as a more basal ornithischian. We use this taxon to show how a "typical" ornithischian d

BACKGROUND: Given the susceptibility of developing tissues to drugs, even small doses of anticancer drugs may affect odontogenesis. Although any toxic effect is transient, the treatment regimens are based on repeated drug administration.
OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to establish the impact of antineoplastic therapy on the occurrence of longterm adverse dental effects in a dose-dependent manner in young survivors treated for cancer before 10 years of age.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In total, 37 cancer survivors treated with antineoplastic therapy before 10 years of age underwent a dental examinatio

Congenital granular cell lesion (CGCL) is a rare benign oral cavity tumor in infants. Neonatal teeth are also rare dental anomalies that appear during the first month of life. This report describes a case of eruption of neonatal teeth after surgical excision of CGCL. Surprisingly, residual neonatal teeth erupted after extraction of the neonatal teeth. If neonatal teeth are mobile, they should be carefully extracted with curettage of the underlying tissues of the dental papilla; failure to curette the socket might result in eruption of odontogenic remnants. If neonatal teeth were exfoliated, pa

The well preserved anterior upper and lower jaw fragment of an adult specimen of Coloborhynchus robustus (Pterosauria: Ornithocheiridae), SMNK 2302 PAL, allowed investigations of the replacement pattern of the dentition macroscopically and by using CT scans. The quantification of the dentition by Zahnreihen, Z-Spacing, and replacement waves indicates a complex pattern of different replacement stages in which large gaps within the dentition were avoided. The specialized prey-catching apparatus of Coloborhynchus thus could retain its function even following tooth replacement. The replacement pro

Regeneration of the dentin-pulp complex is essential for tooth integrity and function. However, the inherent cell heterogeneity limits our understanding of lineage-specific subsets critical for efficient odontogenesis and regenerative outcomes. Here, we demonstrated that CD24+ human dental papilla cells (hDPCs) exhibit robust odontogenic differentiation capacity and drive coordinated regeneration of well-vascularized pulp and structurally integrated dentin tissues in both ectopic murine and preclinical in situ minipig models, significantly outperforming conventional dental pulp stem cells. BACKGROUND/AIM: Numerical aberrations of permanent dentition and dystopic tooth eruption are part of the phenotype of the tumor predisposition syndrome neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). In these cases, surplus tooth germs usually develop in the alveolar processes of the jaw. This report attests to the dystopic development of a dysplastic supernumerary tooth in NF1 arising outside the jaw.
CASE REPORT: The 8-year-old male patient developed a microdont outside the bone and above the occlusal plane of the retained maxillary right second molar. The supernumerary tooth was completely embedded in ora

Mutations in the WNT10A gene were first detected in the rare syndrome odonto-onycho-dermal dysplasia (OODD, OMIM257980) but have now also been found to cause about 35-50% of selective tooth agenesis (STHAG4, OMIM150400), a common disorder that mostly affects the permanent dentition. In our random sample of tooth agenesis patients, 40% had at least one mutation in the WNT10A gene. The WNT10A Phe228Ile variant alone reached an allele frequency of 0.21 in the tooth agenesis cohort, about 10 times higher than the allele frequency reported in large SNP databases for Caucasian populations. Patients

Hypodontia, the congenital absence of one or a few teeth, is one of the most common alterations of the human dentition. The most common permanent missing teeth are the third molars, second premolars, and maxillary lateral incisors. Although hypodontia does not represent a serious public health problem, it may cause masticatory and speech dysfunctions and esthetic problems. Transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) is believed to play an important role in tooth development. Its gene is expressed at bud, cap, and bell stages of odontogenesis. Genetic polymorphisms in the TGF-beta1 gene promot

Simultaneous presentation of tuberculosis (TB) and lymphoma in a young child is indeed a very rare entity. Malignancy such as Hodgkin's disease (HD) most commonly causes suppression of the cell-mediated immunity, which makes the individual, especially children, more prone to tuberculous infection. One of the non-life threatening complications in these young cancer survivors is the associated dental anomalies. These can seriously impair the quality of life of teenagers and young adults. Higher incidence of caries, discoloration of teeth or even early loss of teeth requiring dental prosthesis, c

Tooth development is regulated by a reciprocal series of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions. With the large number of genes involved in the odontogenesis process, the opportunity for mutations to disrupt this process is high. Mutational analysis has revealed genes that are major causes of non-syndromic hypodontia. The most common permanent missing teeth are the third molars, second premolars, and maxillary lateral incisors. Although hypodontia does not represent a serious public health problem, it may cause masticatory and speech dysfunctions and esthetic problems. Msx1 (Muscle Segment Box) i

It is known that genetic factors determine odontogenesis; furthermore, studies have revealed that various genes in humans can regulate the development of different types and generations of teeth. In this study it has been assumed that tooth impaction-at least to some extent-also depends on the presence of specific genetic markers, especially allelic variants of the MSX1 gene. The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the suitability of selected molecular markers located within the MSX1 gene for the determination of the risk of tooth impaction in particular patients. The study particip

PAX9 is a transcription factor deeply involved in the gene networks that regulate odontogenesis. To date, only a restricted number of mutations in this gene have been associated with non-syndromic tooth agenesis. Six families segregating non-syndromic oligodontia/hypodontia were screened for mutations in PAX9 gene. A novel missense mutation lying in the exon 2 close to the end of the paired domain in three families was identified. Heterozygous mutation C503G is expected to result in an alanine-to-glycine amino acid change in residue 168 (Ala168Gly), which is invariably conserved among several

Variations in tooth number in children, each of whom had supernumerary teeth and agenesis of teeth, is described. Among the 11, seven had cleft lip and palate, and two had clefting syndromes; two children had dental anomalies only. Only children who had both supernumerary teeth and congenitally missing teeth outside the area of the cleft alveolus were included. Concomitant hypodontia and hyperdontia were observed in the same dentition in nine subjects, in the same jaw in eight subjects, and in the same jaw quadrant in only three subjects. Supernumerary teeth and agenesis of teeth were observed

Premature eruption of teeth occurs in 1 of every 2,000 births. The reported association between natal teeth and serious, rare, inherited syndromes suggests that particular caution should be exercised in examination of newborns having prematurely erupted teeth. The ectomesenchyma, from which the orofacial structures develop, undergoes a complex, coordinated series of steps of proliferation and differentiation during the first two months in utero. At approximately seven weeks the presumptive mandibular and maxillary arches show a bandlike ectodermal thickening called the dental lamina. Odontogen

Alleviating inflammation and promoting dentine regeneration is critical for the healing of pulpitis. In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory, angiogenesis and odontogenesis function of icariin on Human dental pulp cells (HDPCs) under inflammatory state. Furthermore, the underlying mechanisms was also evaluated. Icariin attenuated the LPS-induced pro-inflammatory marker expression, such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6 and IL-8. The immunoblotting and immunofluorescence staining results showed that icariin suppressed the inflammatory responses mediated by the protein kinase B (Akt)

OBJECTIVE: The MSX1 gene plays a key role in odontogenesis regulation, particularly during early stages. Since only a few genetic variants have thus far been associated with non-syndromic tooth agenesis, we screened for mutations in this gene, aiming to detect a relationship between genotype and phenotype.
DESIGN: The sample consisted of one proband with non-syndromic hypodontia involving upper lateral incisors, three relatives and ten unaffected controls. The proband and two affected relatives showed the same phenotype. DNA was extracted from buccal epithelial cells, and direct sequencing wa

The classification and localization of odontogenic lesions from panoramic radiographs is a challenging task due to the positional biases and class imbalances of the lesions. To address these challenges, a novel neural network, DOLNet, is proposed that uses mutually influencing hierarchical attention across different image scales to jointly learn the global representation of the entire jaw and the local discrepancy between normal tissue and lesions. The proposed approach uses local attention to learn representations within a patch. From the patch-level representations, we generate inter-patch,

Studies of teleost teeth are important for understanding the evolution and mechanisms of tooth development, replacement, and regeneration. Here, we used gross specimens, microcomputed tomography, and histological analysis to characterize tooth structure, development, and resorption patterns in adult Pelteobagrus fulvidraco. The oral and pharyngeal teeth are villiform and conical. Multiple rows of dentition are densely distributed and the tooth germ is derived from the epithelium. P. fulvidraco exhibits a discontinuous and non-permanent dental lamina. Epithelial cells surround the teeth and are
