To confirm the diagnosis and determine the cause of the olfactory disturbance, we used an immunohistochemical method to examine biopsy specimens of the olfactory mucosa from a patient who complained of anosmia after head injury. Neuron-specific enolase immunoreactivity was found in the olfactory vesicles and dendrites of the receptor cells in the olfactory epithelium. S-100 protein immunoreactivity was found in the ductal cells of Bowman's gland in the olfactory epithelium and in the acinar cells of Bowman's gland in the lamina propria. This suggests that the olfactory receptor cells and Bowma

The olfactory mucosa contains olfactory ecto-mesenchymal stem cells (OE-MSCs) which show stemness features, multipotency capabilities, and have a therapeutic potential. The OE-MSCs have already been collected and isolated from various mammals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of collecting, purifying and amplifying OE-MSCs from the cat nasal cavity. Four cats were included in the study. Biopsies of olfactory mucosa were performed on anesthetized animals. Then, the olfactory OE-MSCs were isolated, and their stemness features as well as their mesodermal differentiation capab

The olfactory mucosa, bulbs and tracts were examined for the presence of Cryptococcus neoformans in 3 patients with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and cryptococcal meningitis. Two of them had antibodies against HIV-1 and one had positive serology for HIV-2. Cryptococci were seen in the subarachnoid space around olfactory tracts and bulbs and in the submucosal olfactory nerve fascicles. In one case, olfactory nerve fascicles from the lamina propria were also affected. Olfactory epithelium and respiratory mucosa were not involved. We suggest that Cryptococcus reached the olfactor

Head trauma is one of the most common etiologies of olfactory dysfunction. It is difficult to use either the olfactory function test or magnetic resonance imaging to directly assess the course of damage to olfactory nerves. Thallium-201 (201Tl) olfacto-scintigraphy has been shown to be an able means for objectively assessing the olfactory nerve transport function. It is expected to be used to evaluate olfactory nerve regeneration after damage to the olfactory nerves. However, no such result has been reported. We present a patient who lost his olfactory function after experiencing head trauma.

BACKGROUND: One approach to the sphenoid sinus involves resection of the inferior portion of the superior turbinate. There is general agreement from anatomic investigations that this area contains olfactory mucosa. This study will determine if olfactory tissue can be found in the superior turbinate mucosa of patients with chronic sphenoiditis and what effect its removal has on a patient's olfactory ability.
METHODS: The inferior one-third of the superior turbinate removed during endoscopic sphenoidotomy was stained with olfactory marker protein antibody, a marker for mature olfactory tissue.

Diagnosis of olfactory dysfunction in the dog has been rare. Few techniques for this diagnosis are available. Electro-olfactography, an electrophysiologic technique for evaluating the function of the olfactory mucosa, was developed as a relatively noninvasive technique for diagnosis of functional abnormalities of the olfactory mucosa in mesatocephalic canines. The technique was validated by several experiments and normative values for the electro-olfactogram were obtained.

The herbicide dichlobenil selectively causes necrosis of the dorsomedial part of olfactory neuroepithelium (NE) with permanent damage to the underlying mucosa, whereas the lateral part of the olfactory region and the nasal respiratory mucosa remain undamaged. We investigated here whether human umbilical cord blood CD133(+) stem cells (HSC) injected intravenously to nod-scid mice pretreated with dichlobenil may engraft the olfactory mucosa and contribute to the regeneration of the damaged NE. We tested HLA-DQalpha1 DNA and three human microsatellites (Combined DNA Index System) as indicators of

Taurine (2-aminoethane sulfonic acid) and carnosine (beta-alanyl-L-histidine) are found in large quantities in the olfactory epithelium and bulb. Taurine is a structurally simple amino acid, and has been reported to have several putative roles, such as neurotransmitter, neuromodulator, neurogrowth factor and to function in membrane stabilization. Carnosine, on the other hand, has been suggested as a putative neurotransmitter in the olfactory system. We have succeeded in visualizing taurine- and carnosine-like immunoreactivities (LI) in the human olfactory mucosa, and also carnosine-LI in the h

The ultrastructure of the olfactory system of most fossorial rodents remains largely unexplored. This study sought to investigate the functional structure of the olfactory mucosa and olfactory bulb of two species of fossorial rodents that have distinct behaviour and ecology, the East African root rat (RR) and the naked mole rat (NMR). Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were employed. The basic ultrastructural design of the olfactory system of the two species was largely comparable. In both species, the olfactory mucosa comprised an olfactory epithelium and an und

The necrotic effect of various salt solutions was tested on the catfish olfactory mucosa. Only zinc cations were able to induce an extensive degeneration of the olfactory cells. Two different modes of irrigation of the mucosa with zinc sulfate were investigated. (1) The olfactory cavity is flushed with the chemical for not more than a few seconds. At concentrations above 30 mM, the resulting damage is very reproducible, largely concentration independent and almost completely specific for the olfactory receptor cells. The non-sensory respiratory cells are unaffected, the sustentacular cells sur

Our previous studies have demonstrated that the primary olfactory projection in rainbow trout is organized nontopographically; the pattern of termination of olfactory axons in the olfactory bulb is unrelated to the distribution of their cell bodies in the olfactory mucosa. In the present research we have further characterized the organization of this projection by examining the lectin-binding properties of olfactory receptor neurons. The results indicate that in trout, as in mammals, populations of olfactory receptor neurons differ significantly from one another in their carbohydrate "signatur

The surgical technique of olfactory cleft dilatation consists in transmucosal lateral fracture-dislocation of the lateral wall of each olfactory cleft (i.e., of the turbinate wall of the ethmoid, composed, from anterior to posterior, of the middle, superior and supreme turbinates), in order to get access to the recess hosting the human olfactory mucosa and to the roof of the olfactory cleft (i.e., cribriform plate), with minimal trauma to the mucosa. Olfactory cleft dilatation is indicated for dysosmia secondary to constitutional stenosis of the olfactory clefts due to abnormal development of

OBJECTIVES: Intranasal delivery has been shown to target peptide therapeutics to the central nervous system (CNS) of animal models and induce specific neurological responses. In an investigation into the pathways by which intranasal administration delivers insulin to the CNS, this study has focused on the direct delivery of insulin from the olfactory mucosa to the olfactory bulbs via the olfactory nerve pathway.
METHODS: Nasal and olfactory tissues of mice were imaged with fluorescent and electron microscopy 30 min following intranasal administration.
KEY FINDINGS: Macroscopic analysis confi

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging arbovirus of the genus flavivirus that is associated with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) in newborns. A wide range of clinical symptoms including intellectual disability, speech delay, coordination or movement problems, and hearing and vision loss, have been well documented in children with CZS. However, whether ZIKV can invade the olfactory system and lead to post-viral olfactory dysfunction (PVOD) remains unknown.
METHODS: We investigated the susceptibility and biological responses of the olfactory system to ZIKV infection using mouse models and

BACKGROUND: The olfactory mucosa has emerged as a promising source of mesenchymal stem cells with neurogenic potential. These cells exhibit neural, glial, and mesenchymal properties, making them attractive candidates for regenerative medicine, particularly in treating neurodegenerative and immunemediated disorders.
METHODS: This systematic review analyzed existing literature on the isolation, characterization, and therapeutic applications of olfactory mucosa mesenchymal stem cells. The review assessed variations in isolation techniques, culture conditions, and differentiation potential, as we

For most animal species, olfaction plays a paramount role in their perception of the environment. Odours are initially detected in neurons located in the olfactory mucosa. This tissue is regulated by several physiological signals and can be altered in pathology. A number of clinical studies suggest an association between depressive disorders and olfactory sensory loss. In rodents, depressive-like states can be observed in models of chronic stress. We tested the hypothesis that olfactory function might be altered in a rat model of depression, induced by chronic variable stress (CVS). While CVS

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The pathophysiology underlying human olfactory disorders is poorly understood because biopsying the olfactory epithelium (OE) can be unrepresentative and extensive immunohistochemical analysis is lacking. Autopsy tissue enriches our grasp of normal and abnormal olfactory immunohistology and guides the sampling of the OE by biopsy. Furthermore, a comparison of the molecular phenotype of olfactory epithelial cells between rodents and humans will improve our ability to correlate human histopathology with olfactory dysfunction.

CD36 is a transmembrane protein that is involved in the recognition of certain amphiphilic molecules such as polar lipids in various tissues and body fluids. So far, CD36 homologues in insects have been demonstrated to be present on the surface of olfactory dendrites and to participate in the perception of exogenous compounds. However, little is known about the relationship between CD36 and mammalian olfaction. Indeed, the detection of only CD36 mRNA in the mouse olfactory epithelium has been reported to date. In the present study, to provide potential pieces of evidence for the involvement of

We have briefly reviewed the literature pertaining to the movement of tracer molecules and infectious organisms within the olfactory nerve. There is a body of evidence indicating that tracers placed in the CSF will quickly move via the olfactory nerve to the nasal mucosa and then to the cervical lymph nodes. Organic and inorganic tracer materials and organisms as diverse as viruses, a bacillus, and an amoeba, when placed in the nasal cavity, have been shown to move from the nasal mucosa via the olfactory nerve to the olfactory bulb and the CSF. We think that a portion of the data on tracer mov

In order to support the contention that the feeding pattern seen after olfactory bulb removal is due to a sensory loss, the feeding pattern of rats was studied after a peripheral chemical lesion of the olfactory mucosa. A conditioned smell aversion procedure was used to assess the occurence and duration of anosmia after the topical application of zinc sulfate to the olfactory mucosa. It was found that the sensory deficit induced by the peripheral lesion lasted from four to six days. The occurrence of the disrupted feeding pattern in the peripherally lesioned rats coincided in time with the sho
