Locus coeruleus stimulation modulates olfactory bulb evoked potentials.

Field-evoked potentials from the main olfactory bulb in response to stimulation of the olfactory nerve and lateral olfactory tract were measured without and with conditioning stimulation of the locus coeruleus noradrenergic system. The locus coeruleus conditioning stimulus suppressed or inhibited the late components of the olfactory bulb potential evoked by orthodromic olfactory nerve stimulation; this inhibitory effect was suppressed by the microinjection of the alpha-adrenergic blocker prazosin into the olfactory bulb. Results indicate that noradrenergic fibers projecting from the locus coer

Olfactory evoked potentials: experimental and clinical studies.

Olfactory evoked potentials (OEPs), obtained by electrical stimulation of the olfactory mucosa, were recorded in dogs and humans to develop an objective method for evaluating olfactory functions. In dogs, OEPs were recorded from the olfactory tract and the scalp. The latency of the first negative peak was approximately 40 msec. A response was not obtained after stimulation of the nasal mucosa and disappeared after sectioning of the olfactory nerve. With increasing frequencies of repetitive stimulation, the amplitude was reduced, suggesting that the response was synaptically mediated. These res

Olfactory ensheathing glia and Schwann cells: two of a kind?

Both olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) and Schwann cells have been shown to promote axonal regrowth and remyelination in the central (CNS) and peripheral nervous systems under experimental conditions. During development, OECs and Schwann cells emerge from the olfactory placode and the neural crest, respectively, thus sharing a common "peripheral" origin. Both cell types are known to express a number of different molecular markers in common, to display a similar morphological phenotype in culture and to respond to the same growth-promoting molecules. Contrary to Schwann cells, OECs are found i

[Somatotopic relations between the olfactory mucosa and the olfactory bulb in the triton].

The axons of receptors located in the olfactory neuroepithelium are known to synapse with mitral cell dendrites in the glomerular layer of the ipsilateral olfactory bulb, but few previous studies showed a clear-cut topological organization of this projection. We therefore injected horseradish peroxidase (HRP) into restricted areas of the olfactory mucosa in adult tritons, Triturus cristatus. The animals were perfused with glutaraldehyde 17 h later; the mucosa, the olfactory nerve and bulb were removed, serially cut and treated with diaminobenzidine to reveal the localization and extent of the

Study of the morphology of the olfactory organ of African ostrich chick.

The anatomy and histology of the olfactory organ of African ostrich chick were carefully observed by gross anatomy observation, paraffin sectioning and haematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. The results showed that there were no keratotic nose lids at the entrance of the external naris, and that the nasal cavity was separated into two imperforate compartments by the nasal septum. The posterior conchae were connected with the middle conchae without cohering to nasal walls, and appeared to be part of a palinal elongation of the middle conchae. Olfactory cells were distributed in the mucosal epitheliu

Extrabulbar olfactory system and nervus terminalis FMRFamide immunoreactive components in Xenopus laevis ontogenesis.

The extrabulbar olfactory system (EBOS) is a collection of nerve fibers which originate from primary olfactory receptor-like neurons and penetrate into the brain bypassing the olfactory bulbs. Our description is based upon the application of two neuronal tracers (biocytin, carbocyanine DiI) in the olfactory sac, at the cut end of the olfactory nerve and in the telencephalon of the developing clawed frog. The extrabulbar olfactory system was observed already at stage 45, which is the first developmental stage compatible with our techniques; at this stage, the extrabulbar olfactory system fibers

[Olfactory evoked potentials produced by electrical stimulation of the olfactory mucosa].

OBJECTIVE: To develop an objective olfactometric method. METHODS: Electrically evoked olfactory potentials were recorded in 20 rabbits with 0.2-4.0 mA electrical stimulations. The stimulating electrodes were placed on the olfactory and respiratory regions of the nasal mucosa. Recording electrode was placed on the scalp near the olfactory bulb. RESULTS: Electrically evoked olfactory potentials composed of triphasic negative-positive-negative peaks, named N1, P1, N2 respectively, were detected on the olfactory region. The latencies of N1, P1, N2 were 16.27 ms, 25.36 ms, 49.75 ms respectively i

Target-dependent routing of sensory information in the olfactory system.

Parallel processing, the ability to split the information content of sensory stimuli and handle them simultaneously, is essential for sensory perception in many systems. Mitral (MCs) and tufted cells (TCs) in the olfactory bulb (OB), with their separate but overlapping projection areas, provide an ideal anatomical basis for parallel processing. Whether they convey different information to distinct areas of the olfactory cortex remains unclear. Here, we separated mouse OB output neurons by innervation area using retrograde tracing from the anterior olfactory nucleus (AON) or the anterior pirifo

The loss of scents: do defects in olfactory sensory neuron development underlie human disease?

The olfactory system is a fascinating and beguiling sensory system: olfactory sensory neurons detect odors underlying behaviors essential for mate choice, food selection, and escape from predators, among others. These sensory neurons are unique in that they have dendrites contacting the outside world, yet their first synapse lies in the central nervous system. The information entering the central nervous system is used to create odor memories that play a profound role in recognition of individuals, places, and appropriate foods. Here, the structure of the olfactory epithelium is given as an ov

Experimental studies on the olfactory marker protein. I. Presence of the olfactory marker protein in tufted and mitral cells.

Partial, unilateral olfactory nerve section was performed in mice, and the behavior of the olfactory marker protein (OMP) studied, after this experimental manipulation, with the peroxidase--antiperoxidase method. The protein, which in normal mice is present only in mature olfactory sensory neurons, after unilateral lesion of the fila olfactoria was observed in mitral and tufted cells of both olfactory bulbs. Positive elements, present at 5 days postoperative, increased in number up to 30 days and some could still be detected at 60 days. The functional implications of this finding are briefly d

The forebrain of actinopterygians revisited.

The forebrain of actinopterygian fishes differs from that of other vertebrates in that it consists of a pair of solid lobes. Lateral ventricles surrounded by nervous tissue are entirely lacking. Comparative anatomical and embryological studies have shown that the unusual configuration of the forebrain in actinopterygians results from an outward bending or eversion of the dorsal portions of its lateral walls. Due to this eversion, the telencephalic roof plate is transformed into a wide, membranous structure which surrounds the dorsal and lateral parts of the solid lobes and is attached to their

Olfaction in Parkinson's disease: methods of assessment and clinical relevance.

Several neurological conditions have been reported to be associated with peripheral or central deficits of olfactory system. In recent years particular emphasis has been placed on the early and severe olfactory impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD), in which limited neuropathological studies have revealed a marked dopaminergic deficit in the olfactory tubercles. Moreover, indirect evidence suggests that dysfunction of the dopaminergic pathways from mesencephalon to the piriform cortex may play a role in olfactory impairment in PD. A large number of clinical studies have reported that olfactor

RNA sequencing of olfactory bulb in Parkinson's disease reveals gene alterations associated with olfactory dysfunction.

The olfactory bulb is involved early in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease (PD), which is consistent with the early onset of olfactory dysfunction. Identifying the molecular mechanisms through which PD affects the olfactory bulb could lead to a better understanding of the pathophysiology and etiology of olfactory dysfunction in PD. We specifically aimed to assess gene expression changes, affected pathways and co-expression network by whole transcriptomic profiling of the olfactory bulb in subjects with clinicopathologically defined PD. Bulk RNA sequencing was performed on frozen human

Efferent connections of the main olfactory bulb in the opossum (Monodelphis domestica): a characterization of the olfactory entorhinal cortex in a marsupial.

Olfactory projections have been investigated for decades, but few reports using modern, sensitive neural tracers are available. In marsupials, only lesion-degeneration studies exist and they are restricted to the genera Didelphis and Trichosurus. Some of the territories described as olfactory-recipient such as the upper portion of the rhinal fissure and the vomeronasal amygdala are, however, controversial. Also, the characterization of the olfactory portion of the entorhinal cortex is far from clear in acallosal mammals. The present report investigates, using biotinylated dextran-amine, the ol
